Sanders: Clinton Owes Me an Apology

Sen. Bernie Sanders said Hillary Clinton owed him and his campaign an apology in response to accusations from the Democratic front-runner's campaign that he and his team had been "lying" and misconstruing Clinton's relationship with the oil and gas industry, NBC news reported.

"Secretary Clinton, you owe us an apology. We were telling the truth," Sanders said Friday evening at a Wisconsin rally in Sheboygan South High School.

Sanders, citing an analysis done by the environmental organization Greenpeace, argued that Clinton's campaign and Super PAC have received "more than $4.5 million from the fossil fuel industry" and said "57 oil, gas, and coal industry lobbyists have directly contributed to her campaign."

Clinton team quickly responded, saying they will not apologize "for calling out these kinds of schemes for what they are: a desperate move from a campaign that has clearly decided that the only hope for a path to victory is through misleading attacks."

White House Fence Jumper Arrested

An unidentified person was taken into custody late Friday night after jumping the White House fence, the Secret Service said.

The person tossed a backpack over the north fence before climbing over around 11:45 p.m., the agency said in a statement. The person was immediately taken into custody by the Secret Service Uniformed Division officers.

The individual was charged with unlawful entry and taken to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Officials did not identify the person or comment on the contents of the backpack. A security sweep of the White House complex failed to turn up anything unusual. Normal operations resumed shortly afterwards.

The incident is only the latest in a string of fence-jumping episodes that forced the National Park Service, which helps oversee the White House grounds, to boost fence security.

Sharp metal spikes were added to the fence last year as a a temporary security measure pending a new design for the White House fencing system.

1 Dead, 5 Injured After Small Plane Crashes Into Car

One person has died and five others are injured after a small plane crashed into a car on a Southern California freeway, authorities said.

The single-engine, two-seat Lancair IV crashed into a car at approximately 9 a.m. Saturday morning on Interstate 15, about 50 miles north of San Diego, witnesses told dispatchers. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers and firefighters rushed to the location near Pala Road.

One person in the car was killed, and three others from the vehicle were taken to a hospital, California Highway Patrol Officer Tony Polizzi said. Two occupants in the plane also were transported for treatment.

Jacob Duncan was heading to work when he noticed a plane that appeared to be having trouble stabilizing approaching the freeway.

“The plane touched down about 40 feet behind my car and it slid about another 40 feet,” Duncan recalled in an interview with NBC 7.

“One car was stopped on the shoulder,” he said. “It slammed right into the back of them.”

Duncan hopped out of his vehicle and with the help of other driver tried to assist the people inside the aircraft and the vehicle.

He said the pilot, a man, suffered injuries to his face but survived the crash. A woman in the airplane also survived.

Former major league catcher Matt Nokes told The Associated Press he once owned the plane and landed it on the same highway in February 2000.

"It was crazy," Nokes told The Associated Press on Saturday. "Everything worked out so beautifully. It was almost a humorous thing. Unfortunately, it doesn't always turn out that way."

Erika Uribe-Muñoz witnessed the crash and commented on NBC 7's Facebook page.

"We were on the opposite side of the freeway, we saw it as it was coming down to crash, pretty scary," she said.

Duncan said it was obvious the pilot didn’t have much control of the plane and was trying his best to avoid the vehicles on the road, adding that the crash might have been avoidable if the car hadn't been stopped on the freeway.

“It’s sad for everyone involved,” he said.

No other information was immediately available.

Clinton, Sanders Spar Over NY Debate Dates

Hillary Clinton's campaign said Saturday that Democratic rival Bernie Sanders has rejected three proposed debate dates ahead of the New York primary on April 19, NBC News reported.

In a statement, Clinton's campaign said it offered April 4, but the Sanders team wanted the debate after the Wisconsin primary on April 5. Clinton officials then offered April 14 and April 15 as potential dates and those were also rejected by the Sanders campaign.

“Both offers for the night of April 14 and the morning of April 15 still remain," Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon wrote. "The Sanders campaign needs to stop with the games."

The Sanders campaign, however, responded that they have proposed other dates the Clinton campaign has rejected.

"Unfortunately, the dates and venues [Clinton] has proposed don't make a whole lot of sense," Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs said in a statement. "The idea that they want a debate in New York on a night of the NCAA finals — with Syracuse in the tournament, no less — is ludicrous."

After a blustery night in the Midwest, forecasters said that strong winds and snow would continue to sweep across the Northeast Sunday, NBC News reported.

High wind advisories were in place from Ohio to Maine, as well as southern Illinois and most of Kentucky, forecasters said.

The weather has already knocked out power in chunks of Indiana and Pennsylvania and Ohio, where wind gusts Saturday topped 60 miles per hour.

Forecasters said much of the Northeast could see temperatures in the 20s and 30s, which is below average. Around 4 to 6 inches of snow could fall in parts of upstate New York to parts of Massachusetts near Boston, and much Connecticut could see 1 to 3 inches.

Trump Would Guarantee Win for Clinton: Cruz

Sen. Ted Cruz urged North Dakota party activists and delegates to back him over Donald Trump, warning that a Trump nomination would guarantee a win for Hillary Clinton, NBC News reported.

Cruz said that Republicans are coalescing in opposition to Trump, who still leads the GOP field nationally, despite a drop in his poll numbers.

They understand that "nominating Donald would be a trainwreck," the Texas politician said. "Nominating Donald elects Hillary Clinton."

Cruz noted the significance of North Dakota's delegates: "It is entirely possible the men and women here will decide this entire primary — will decide this nomination," he said on stage.

The state doesn't have a primary or a caucus. All 28 delegates are free agents, and can back whomever they personally support.

Police say an "armed and dangerous" suspect in a series of crimes in two New England states injured an officer and tried to steal a police cruiser before he was taken into custody Saturday.

Investigators had been searching for 32-year-old Michael Munroe of Raymond, New Hampshire, in connection to multiple robberies.

The violent crime spree ended Saturday when Munroe and his girlfriend, 29-year-old Rebecca Norton, were arrested in Hancock, a town so quiet, there is only one police officer on duty at a time.

Saturday, that officer was Frank Shea.

"He was talking with this guy, and then all of the sudden, I saw this roundhouse punch, a sucker punch, come up and hit Frank in the face," said Hancock Fire Chief Nevan Cassidy, who assisted in the arrest, along with other firefighters.

According to police, Munroe punched Shea twice, injuring him.

At the time, Shea did not know the man was Munroe.

"He got in the police car and tried to steal the cruiser," said Hancock Police Chief Andrew Wood. "Luckily, the officer had removed the keys and he wasn't able to go anywhere."

"Frank and I pulled him out," said Cassidy. The guy was incredibly strong, and it took both of us to just to pull him out of the car and hold him down."

Munroe is accused of robbing a bank Monday in Ossipee.

Wednesday, he allegedly carjacked a woman as she left work at the Dress Barn in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. The suspect got away with her purse and her vehicle, which was later recovered in Wilmington.

The suspect is also accused of robbing another bank Friday in Seabrook, New Hampshire.

Munroe and Norton may have left their mark in another part of town, as well. An SUV the couple is accused of stealing in Derry was found abandoned on a rural trail.

Virginia State Police announced Saturday that the funeral for Trooper Chad P. Dermyer will take place on Tuesday, April 5 at 11 a.m. at Liberty Baptist Church at 1021 Big Bethel Road in Hampton, Va., and will be followed by a private graveside burial in Gloucester County.

The same church will also hold a visitation on Monday, April 4 from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

Dermyer, 37, was shot multiple times by an Illinois man before other officers shot and killed the gunman, police said. Police have not said what the motive was in the shooting and identified the shooter as 34-year-old James Brown III.

Dermyer, uniformed in dark blue fatigues, had been participating with about a dozen other troopers in a training exercise at the bus station.

He was known as a hard worker and good colleague, said Newport News Police Sgt. Gerald Loose. Dermyer worked for the Newport News Police Department from 2003 to 2007. Dermyer had a wife and two children, police said.

Police in Connecticut arrested two people after an argument at Royal Buffet got out of hand Saturday night.

Manchester police say they were called to 410 West Middle Turnpike for a dispute that started verbally over crab legs at the buffet table and escalated into a physical confrontation. During the scuffle, a 21-year-old man was punched in the face and lost a tooth.

That man's mother jumped in and deployed pepper spray at her son's attackers. Her actions were in self-defense and she is not facing any charges, according to police.

Police arrested two people, identified as Clifford Knight, 45, and Latoya Knight, 38, both of Windsor. Clifford Knight is charged with third-degree assault and disorder conduct. Latoya Knight is charged with disorderly conduct and threatening. Police say the suspects are husband and wife.

Clifford Knight was released on a $5,000 non-surety bond, and Lataya Knight was released on a $2,500 non-surety bond. They are both expected in court on April 14.

The Manchester Fire Department responded to vent out the restaurant after the pepper spray was deployed. The restaurant had to close while the health department assessed the air quality, but the restaurant says they opened for business at the usual time Sunday.

Editor’s note: Police previously thought the injured victim was a juvenile but have since determined that victim was a young adult. This story has been updated to reflect this.

Towns Brace for Another Spring Snowstorm

Many people are in disbelief as they have to dig out the cold-weather gear for hopefully one last time this season.

“It’s too late for snow. Mother Nature had her chance,” says Alyssa Dubourg of Torrington.

“Everything is already in the garage. Spring stuff is out. Bicycles are out. We don’t want any more shovels,” says Breanne Lehoux of Torrington.

Seasons might have switched. But police want people to be ready for the cruel, if brief, return to winter-like conditions.

“Park off the street if they can. Let our street department clear the snow,” says Sgt. Kevin Sultaire of Torrington Police Department.

There is no official parking ban in Torrington but moving cars could help if snow piles up here.

Another concern is the possibility of lines coming down because of strong winds.

Police say always assume the line is charged and dangerous.

“If you come across any downed power lines just give us a call so we can address that,” says Sultaire.

At the Dairy Queen on Main Street in Torrington, which opened March 1st, this is supposed to be its busy season. They hope ice cream lovers venture out despite the Blizzard inspired weather.

“Not good. They will still come and get ice cream. But we don’t want snow,” says Gina Bouchez, Dairy Queen owner.

Police remind everyone if the roads are snowy or icy to take it slow and clear off windows before driving.

Snow Slows Plans for Tribute to Middletown Hit-and-Run Victim

The potential of snow forced a change of plans for a family looking to pay tribute to a Middletown woman killed recently in a hit-and-run.

Two daughters-in-law of Barbara Eddinger had planned to run in the Harvard Pilgrim Middletown Half Marathon in honor of the 61-year-old.

The race had to be postponed because of anticipated snow and windy conditions.

“Initially another blow but I think it gives us another opportunity to get even more prepared to honor her in a little bigger way,” says Annie Eddinger, a daughter-in-law of Barbara.

Police say Barbara Eddinger was putting a letter in her mailbox on Chamberlain Road in Middletown on Thursday when an out-of-control SUV struck her and then took off. The driver, believed to be a male, has not been found.

Police say the driver’s side front end will have noticeable damage. The SUV is described as dark blue/black on the lower half of the vehicle and a lighter color by the roof line.

Eddinger was a mother of five sons and a grandmother to 15 children.

Her family says she had a love of gardening and one of her favorite projects was filling planters that dot Main Street in Middletown.

The family had hoped before the road race to place a ribbon and a picture of Eddinger in planters that line the course so runners could connect a face with the hard work which had been previously done.

“These planters people walk by every day and this was her work of art, her expression of love and I don’t think a lot of people realized it was her,” says Kelly Eddinger, one of Barbara’s daughters-in-law.

Both Kelly and Annie Eddinger had special shirts made for the race with Barbara’s picture on it.

“She was extremely giving and caring. She was always the first person when someone had gone through a hard time, she was the first person to bring them a meal, to setup, bring them soup weekly for as long as they needed it,” says Annie Eddinger.

The family plans to soon work on the planters so they will be filled with flowers for the race whenever it is rescheduled.

Those who knew Eddinger the best say they are focused right now on remembering how she lived her life and that justice will come in due time.

Flyers fans experienced a scary moment after Saturday’s game at the Wells Fargo Center when an escalator suddenly malfunctioned.

Meghan McGreevy told NBC10 she attended the hockey game against the Ottawa Senators with her fiancé. As fans began leaving following the Flyers’ 3-2 victory, McGreevy says she suddenly saw an escalator speed up. McGreevy captured cellphone video as the escalator suddenly accelerated, sending fans tumbling down.

McGreevy told NBC10 she didn’t witness any major injuries following the incident.

Ike Richman, a spokesman with Comcast Spectator, confirmed with NBC10 the escalator malfunctioned and officials immediately closed it down.

“We immediately closed it down to protect our patrons and notified the operator,” Richman said. “We are working with the operator on investigating this incident. We did not use that particular escalator during tonight's Sixers game. We expect it to be working in time for Tuesday's Sixers game, which is our next event.”

"Based on all data available ... the tsunami threat from this earthquake has now mostly passed," the center said in a statement.

The quake struck at a depth of 21 miles at 4:23 a.m. ET, about 48 miles west southwest of Sola, Vanuatu, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Earthquakes are common in the area and even large tremors often cause no tsunamis. A magnitude 7.3 quake struck off Vanuatu in October and a 6.3 quake struck in December without causing any damage.

Australia's transport minister, Darren Chester, said the Malaysian government is working with officials from Mauritius to take custody of the debris and arrange for its examination.

William Auguste, who owns the Mourouk Ebony Hotel on Rodrigues Island where the debris was found, said "It looks like it's from the inside part of [an airplane]."

Australia has led the search for the plane, which went missing in March 2014 with 239 people on board.
