Hero Dog Saves Woman in Diabetic Shock, Family Says

A dog is being credited with saving the life of a woman who went into diabetic shock last month.

Bailey, a 4-year-old Shih Tzu and Yorkie mix in Schererville, Indiana, began barking at Norene Debold who was asleep on the couch about 5 a.m. on Dec. 29. Jennie Bailey, who has been diabetic for 31 years and also in renal failure, was in extreme danger nearby.

“Bailey just kept barking and barking and barking, and when I went in there Jennie was in the fetal position and ice cold,” Norene said. “She’s not a big barker, so when she was barking—something was wrong.”

Norene went to wake up her husband, Thomas, and call 911.

“The barking didn’t wake me or anything like that,” Thomas said. “But the minute the bedroom door opens, I pop up, and she says ‘come quick, Jennie’s unresponsive.’”

Paramedics arrived to take care of Jennie, whose sugar levels were dangerously low.

“Her sugar was so low they gave her three things of glucose,” Norene said.

Norene said Jennie’s temperature was 85 degrees by the time she got to the hospital.

“I don’t remember much but what they told me,” Jennie said.

She was not surprised at Bailey’s protective response.

“Oh, she’s special to me,” Jennifer said. “She saved my life quite a few times.”

The Debolds say Bailey is not trained in any special way and have no idea how she knew what to do.

“She’s just unbelievable,” Thomas said. “You know dogs can sense things that you don’t, until you see it and go through it, you don’t know how real it really is.”

President Donald Trump has nominated former wrestling executive Linda McMahon to lead the Small Business Administration and she will be in Washington, D.C this morning for a hearing on her nomination.

McMahon and her husband, Vince, founded and built World Wrestling Entertainment Inc., now a publicly traded sports entertainment company.

She stepped down as the company's chief executive in 2009 and poured $100 million of her fortune into two unsuccessful bids for a U.S. Senate seat in Connecticut in 2010 and 2012.

Last year, she launched a joint venture, Women's Leadership LIVE, which promotes opportunities for women in business and public service.

McMahon has also become an influential Republican donor — including to the Trump campaign.

Trump has said she shares his vision of decreasing "burdensome regulations that are hurting our middle-class workers and small businesses."

The SBA, best known for the small business loans it makes and the disaster aid it provides to companies and entrepreneurs, is also tasked with monitoring government officials' compliances with contract laws. Its budget is generally under $1 billion.

McMahon will appear this morning before the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

Oscar Shines Spotlight on Diverse Performances

What a difference a year makes.

Just a year after the #OscarSoWhite controversy that enveloped the Academy Awards, 2017 saw a slate of not only diverse actors being nominated, but diverse stories as well.

Among the actors and actresses receiving nominations Tuesday were Denzel Washington for "Fences," Dev Patel for "Lion," Mahershala Ali for "Moonlight," Viola Davis for "Fences," Octavia Spencer for "Hidden Figures," Naomi Harris for "Moonlight," and Ruth Negga for "Loving." Three of the women in the best supporting actress category are women of color.

Yet perhaps even more telling is the "Adapted Screenplay" category. Four of the five nominees, “Fences,” “Hidden Figures, ” “Lion, ” and “Moonlight” primarily feature diverse casts.

The nominations were seen as a test for the revamped film academy. Following two consecutive years without diverse nominees in any of the major acting categories the Oscars, academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs ushered in new membership rules and added 683 new members as a way to diversify a predominantly white, male and elderly group. The academy now numbers 6,687 people.

Eight people were arrested after a fight on Broad Street in New London, and at least one person broke out a knife and stabbed others involved, according to New London police.

Police said they responded to 264 Broad Street around 8:20 p.m. Monday for a report of a large fight and someone armed with a knife. When officers arrived there was a crowd of people actively fighting. The group did stop but started up again in front of officers, police said.

According to police officers were punched, kicked and spit on as they broke up the incident, but none of them reported injuries.

When police brought the various suspects to the station for booking, they discovered one person had three stab wounds to his back that he had not been aware of. He was taken to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. A female was also taken to the hospital for a cut on her head. A third individual had a slash on his hand, but he refused treatment, police said.

A total of eight people were charged in the incident.

Allan Vargas, 21, of New London, who police said had a knife, was charged with second-degree assault, carrying a dangerous weapon and second-degree breach of peace.

Mia Brown, 19, of Norwich, was charged with accessory to assault, assault on a police officer, carrying a dangerous weapon, interfering with police and breach of peace.

Wanda Marty, 48, of New London, was charged with interfering with police.

Caroline Vargas, 20, Adrian Reyes, 30, Amariz Negron, 20, Shayla Negron, 21, and Carol Valezquez, 38, all of New London, each face a breach of peace charge.

Israel on Tuesday announced the construction of 2,500 new housing units in the West Bank, the second announcement of new construction in the occupied territory since President Donald Trump took office, NBC News reported. On Sunday, Jerusalem municipality announced the construction of about 670 homes in contested east Jerusalem.

Palestinians and most of the international community consider all settlements illegal.

The moves come after Trump opposed in December the decision by the U.S. not to block a United Nations resolution reprimanding Israel for its settlements.

"[Prime Minister] Netanyahu is taking advantage of the change of administration in the United States in order to sooth settler pressure and gain political capital," a spokesman for Israeli group Peace Now said in a statement.

Someone tampered with the American flag flying in the courtyard of town hall in Mansfield over the weekend and turned it upside down, according to town officials.

It’s not clear who flipped over the flag is in the veteran's courtyard at the Beck Municipal Building on Sunday.

Since town hall is closed on weekends, residents reported the problem to community center staff, who immediately fixed the flag, a statement from town officials says.

Photos of the upside down flag started surfacing on social media before town officials were made aware of what happened and, while the issue has been rectified, they said they are still responding to people who are concerned about it.

“The Town of Mansfield takes great pride in flying the U.S. flag in accordance with state and federal protocols, and condemns this disrespect to one of our national emblems. We appreciate that this issue was brought to our attention and quickly corrected by our staff,” the statement says.

Thousands of New Pipeline Jobs? Those Are Temporary

$

The pipeline projects that President Donald Trump moved forward with executive actions on Tuesday will create thousands of construction jobs for a year or two. Fewer than 100 permanent jobs will be created, according to U.S. government figures.

The Dakota Access Pipeline would create 8,200 to 12,000 temporary jobs, but only 40 permanent ones, according to Dakota Access LLC, the company behind the pipeline, the Brookings Institution reported last year. The pipeline, which prompted a standoff by members of the Standing Rock Sioux over what they say would damage cultural sites, would run from North Dakota’s Bakken formation to Illinois.

A State Department analysis of the Keystone XL Pipeline found that 3,900 construction jobs would be created while it was being built or 1,950 a year if it took two years to finish. The analysis, done in 2014, also found that an additional 42,100 jobs could be created for companies supplying concrete, earth-moving equipment and other goods and by services provided to the workers, such as food and construction camps.

TransCanada Corp., the company building the pipeline, disagreed with the construction numbers, putting the figure at 9,000, according to a primer prepared by FactCheck.org in 2014. The corporation agreed with the 42,100 figure for total employment, FactCheck.org noted.

The Keystone XL pipeline would run 1,179 miles from the Canadian province of Alberta to Nebraska, where it would connect existing pipelines to refineries on the Gulf Coast.

The Obama administration denied a permit for the Dakota Access Pipeline late last year and rejected the Keystone LX Pipeline in November 2015.

"From now we are going to start making pipelines in the United States," Trump said from the Oval Office on Tuesday.

China Pushes Back on Trump Admin Over Disputed Islands

China appears to be drawing a foreign policy red line over its fortification of islands in the South China Sea, an early flashpoint in relations between the Asian power and the Trump administration, NBC News reported.

A senior Chinese foreign ministry official fired back Tuesday at White House press secretary Sean Spicer vow that the United States would stand up to China's military expansion in the area.

"There might be a difference" of opinion regarding who has sovereignty over the islands in the South China Sea, "but that's not for the United States" to get involved in, Lu Kang told NBC News in an exclusive interview.

In other words, he was suggesting the U.S. should butt out of China's relationship with its neighbors. But the new administration has made it clear it has no intention of doing so.

Hartford Baseball Stadium on Track With Tight Schedule

$

The insurance and construction companies in charge of completing Dunkin' Donuts Park told Hartford city leaders Tuesday that the stadium is on track for the scheduled April 13 Opening Day.

"We remain on schedule," said Patrick Nails, General Counsel for Arch Insurance, the company that assumed control of the stadium project when the original developer was fired by the city.

However, project consultant, Michael Spinelli, said the current project schedule contains, "no float," meaning the margin for error is slim and any delays "could derail the project."

Spinelli detailed numerous milestones that have been reached, as well as what lies ahead for construction teams.

Since early December, about one hundred workers have been on the site each day.

On what's been completed since Arch and Whiting Turner Construction assumed control, Spinelli rattled off a list that included a watertight roof with leaks in only one part of the park, a boiler has been installed, light hangs have been removed and were then installed properly.

The concourse is complete now that a pedestrian walking bridge has been installed in left field.

Spinelli said he was most happy with the fact that structural issues relating to all of the stairways in the ballpark have been addressed and completed.

Sections of seats were also removed and then reinstalled to be aligned properly with the field. The seats were installed but did not face the field.

As for what's left, the fireproofing of structural steel still needs to be completed which involves the removal of some walls and perhaps even concrete slabs.

Nails, with Arch, said the construction teams are "firing on all cylinders."

Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin voiced concerns about the construction schedule, and asked what concerned the construction company the most.

Spinelli said, "I'm a control freak, and the things I can't control are what concern me."

When reached for comment, Yard Goats General Manager Tim Restall said, "we look forward to playing baseball on April 13, 2017."
