FL Gov. Rick Scott Tries to Woo CT Businesses

Florida’s Governor Rick Scott will be in Connecticut today, hoping to recruit Connecticut businesses to move to the Sunshine State.

Scott will arrive in Norwalk this morning for a meeting with Transact Technologies, which manufactures printers for banks and casinos, among others.

Scott tried to convince company executives at Stanley Black & Decker to meet with him as well, but they declined.

Stanley Black & Decker has been headquartered in New Britain for nearly 175 years.

CFO Donald Allan said the company occasionally receives a phone call from a governor from another state who will want to come visit them.

While the company, which employs 1,600 people in Connecticut and 54,000 globally, said they’re not going anywhere, some Connecticut residents aren’t surprised by Scott’s visit.

“I think they're trying to do the right thing for their state, however we want to make sure we do the right thing for the state of CT,” Allan said in a previous interview.

"We're very vulnerable because we have high taxes and a government right now that's really not inspiring innovation,” said Gerry Goldberg, of West Hartford.

As for Scott’s visit this morning to Transact Technologies in Norwalk, he will be explaining how Florida is an attractive business destination for Connecticut residents and businesses. He last visited the state in 2015.

A sailor who grew up in Connecticut is among the dead after a U.S. Navy destroyer collided with a container ship off the coast of Japan.

Sonar Technician 3rd Class Ngoc T Truong Huynh, 25, was one of seven sailors who died onboard the USS Fitzgerald when it collided with another ship on Friday. Huynh went by the name Tan, according to his sister, Lan Huynh.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

Huynh's family moved to Connecticut when he was in eighth grade, Lan Huynh told NBC Connecticut Sunday night.

Both siblings went to Plainville High School for a time, but graduated from Watertown High, Lan Huynh said.

Tan Huynh also attended Naugatuck Valley Community College before joining the Navy in 2014.

The family moved to Oklahoma after Huynh enlisted, and that might have led to a delay in notifying them, according to Lan Huynh.

"We got a phone call from the Navy personnel in Connecticut. He was driving and he couldn't find us because he didn't know we had moved to Oklahoma," Lan Huynh said.

She said the family is coping as best they can.

"He was a really quiet person. He was also very nice, very selfless. He helped us, the family with a lot," she said. "He had the brightest smile."

Gov. Dannel Malloy directed U.S. and state flags in Connecticut to fly at half-staff in honor of Sonar Technician Huynh.

Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy have called for an investigation into the crash.

The NBC Connecticut First Alert forecast team has issued a First Alert for the potential for severe weather this afternoon and evening.

A tropical air mass will take over this weekend with increasing humidity.  A cold front will approach on Monday which could trigger strong or even severe storms.
Since the forecast is still 3 days away there are many details to be worked out in terms of how widespread and the timing of the storms.
The severe storm prediction center (SPC) has placed most of Connecticut in a “Slight” risk of severe weather.  A portion of western CT falls in an “enhanced” risk of severe storms.  An enhanced risk in western Connecticut means there is a higher threat for storms to become severe.
The main storm threats for any storms that do form would be damaging winds and hail.  With the tropical –like humidity in the air we can also expect briefly heavy rain which could cause flooding.
Stay with the First Alert forecast team through the weekend as new data continues to come into the forecast center.

Watergate Memo: Evidence Showed Nixon WH Plotted US Violence

Watergate prosecutors had evidence that operatives for then-President Richard Nixon planned an assault on anti-war demonstrators in 1972, including potentially physically attacking Vietnam whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, according to a never-before-published memo obtained by NBC News.

The document, an 18-page 1973 investigative memorandum from the Watergate Special Prosecution Force, sheds new light on how prosecutors were investigating attempts at domestic political violence by Nixon aides, an extremely serious charge.

NBC News is publishing the memo, and an accompanying memo about an interview prosecutors conducted with GOP operative Roger Stone, as part of special coverage for the 45th anniversary of the Watergate break-in.

A plot to physically attack Ellsberg is notable because the former Pentagon official has long alleged that Nixon operatives did more than steal his medical files, the most well-known effort to discredit him. Nixon officials denied his account, however, and there were never any indictments related to the accusation.

Muslim Teen Missing After Assault Found Dead; Man Charged

Police say the death of a teenage girl who was assaulted as she walked with friends to her mosque in Fairfax County, Virginia, will not be investigated as a hate crime.

Police believe a body found Sunday afternoon in a pond in the 21500 block of Ridgetop Circle in Sterling, Virginia, is a 17-year-old girl from Reston who was reported missing in the area after the group of friends scattered during the 3 a.m. assault as they were headed to an all-night prayer session after getting food.

Police spokeswoman Tawny Wright said the girl had been walking back to the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) Center with friends when she got into a dispute with a man in a car early Sunday. The man assaulted her, and she became separated from her friends.

The girl's name has not been released, but a close family friend told News4 the victim's name is Nabra.

At some point, residents in the area came across the group of friends and directed them to the mosque, where Nabra was reported missing, the mosque said in a statement Sunday night.

"Immediately thereafter, the ADAMS' personnel notified both Loudon County and Fairfax County authorities who immediately began an extensive search to locate the missing girl," the statement said.

Officers started searching for the girl about 4 a.m. Sunday in the area of Dranesville Road and Woodson Drive in Herndon, Fairfax County Officer Tawny Wright said in a news conference Sunday evening.

Police searched a wooded area near Dranesville Road and Woodson Drive area in Herndon, Virginia, for several hours. Loudoun County authorities also helped in the investigation because the area borders the county.

During the search, an officer saw a car driving suspiciously in the area and pulled the driver over before taking him into custody.

Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, of Sterling has been arrested and charged with murder, police said.

Police discovered a female body in the pond about 3 p.m. The pond is 2 to 3 miles away from the original altercation happened, Wright said.

Police said a baseball bat was recovered. The exact location where it was found is not known at this time.

"We call on law enforcement to investigate and determine the motive of this crime and prosecute to the full extent of the law," the ADAMS Center statement said.

Authorities say they are not investigating the murder as a hate crime.

"At this point, there doesn't seem to be indication this was a bias incident. It looks like they got into a dispute over something," Wright said.

The medical examiner's office will confirm the identity of the remains found.

"I just can't think of a worse instance to occur with the loss of a 17-year-old on Father's Day. As a father of a 17-year-old myself, I can't think of anything worse than confronting that on this particular day," Loudoun County Sheriff Michael Chapman said at the news conference.

Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring released the following statement Saturday night:

"The ADAMS Center has always welcomed me and so many in Northern Virginia like family. This unspeakable attack feels like an assault on our entire community. Words fail at a time like this, so we'll all have to do the best we can to surround them with the love and support they've always shown each of us."

Rep. Barbara Comstock tweeted: "We stand with the @ADAMSCenter_ community in mourning the vile murder of a beautiful 17-year-old girl."

Uber Driver Fined in Miami For Not Speaking English

An Uber driver in South Florida was given a hefty ticket for violating a county ordinance that speaks less to how she handles her vehicle than other skills.

Cell phone footage obtained exclusively by our sister station Telemundo 51 captured Carmen Echevarria, getting a $250 ticket from a Miami-Dade Police officer outside Miami International Airport. Her violation? Not being able to speak English correctly.

“I felt discriminated against,” Echevarria told the station. “I asked the (passenger sitting in her car) ‘Can you please help translate what she is saying?’ Then she asked why, if I was an Uber driver, I didn’t speak English.“

In May 2016, Miami-Dade County issued a memorandum with rules for transportation network drivers – with one of the requirements being "able to communicate in the English language."

“I told her ‘so sorry, a little English’ then she called the inspector who also confronted me and told me in order to be an Uber driver I need it to speak English”.

Uber issued a statement saying that a statewide ordinance going into effect on July 1 "does not include the language referencing the need to speak English" and they will continue to look into the incident.

The language requirement for drivers in Miami is not listed on the Uber website for the area.

"I don't know where the optimism is coming from. That's not to say we should be negative. I just don't see any reason for excessive optimism or pessimism right now," said Randy Frederick, vice president of trading and derivatives at Charles Schwab.

Technology stocks were bouncing back from a rough week, with Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google-parent Alphabet all up about 1 percent in early trading.

Gypsy Moth Caterpillar Fungus Slow to Make an Impact: State Entomologist

This wet spring was supposed to help mitigate the massive gypsy moth caterpillar problem in the southeastern part of the state. The rain triggers a fungus that kills the caterpillars, but now experts are saying it’s working slower than expected.

This year’s gypsy moth caterpillar outbreak has been “pretty extensive and severe,” State Entomologist Kirby Stafford III said in an email to NBC Connecticut. While the rains have been ideal for the gypsy moth caterpillar-killing fungus, it’s been slow to take effect.

But he does have spotty reports of caterpillars dying from that fungus.

So Tim Day’s family, who lives in Gales Ferry, took matters into their own hands.

“They sprayed insecticide on the trees two days ago and then basically thousands of gypsy moth caterpillars fell out of the trees,” Day said.

Beverly Joyce, of Ledyard, has seen her trees dying. She said her husband has used a leaf blower to try and get rid of the caterpillars – and even got a rash from them.

“It’s been bad. Our trees have been chewed. There’s nothing left of them,” Joyce said.

It’s not ideal for someone who loves to be under a shady tree in the summer.

“You hide inside when you can,” Joyce added.

Trees are severely stressed due to the drought and the caterpillars, making them less likely to recover, according to Stafford. Some have already died.

But he said there’s still a chance the fungus will kill more of the older caterpillars as they move around.

Joyce is hoping her method will kill them, too.

“Bug zapper. Once they turn to the moth mode, we’ll use a bug zapper and hopefully get rid of them,” she said.

As for next year’s gypsy moth caterpillar outlook, Stafford said he and his team will look at what the adult moth population looks like and conduct an egg mass survey again in winter.

A special congressional election in Georgia is currently billing at an estimated $40 million and counting between Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel, reported NBC News.
The 6th congressional district has been held by Newt Gingrich, Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA), and Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, who left the seat open when he joined Trump’s Cabinet.
So when the contest heated up, people paid attention — partly because it is seen as a referendum on Trump and possibly an early indicator of how the midterm elections could go next year.

Illinois Native 'Biking for Baseball' Rider Hit by Car, Ending Journey Across America

An Illinois native was biking across the country to help put kids through college, but his ride was cut short when he was hit by a vehicle in Alabama.

“The road was bad, and there were no shoulders,” rider Tim Lalla from Orland Park told NBC 5. “A man in a Ford F-150 crested a hill and hit me going pretty good.”

Lalla was riding his bike in Alabama as he traversed the country going to all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums. He kept fans apprised of his adventures on the Biking for Baseball website and Facebook page, the same page where he informed fans of his journey's "devastating" end.

Lalla suffered serious injuries in the accident, including minor fractures in his spine, a broken neck, and facial fractures. He also lost several teeth in the accident, he said.

“The first thing I remember is waking up on the side of the road,” he said. “It’s tough waking up knowing that the dream of a lifetime is over.”

The journey was supposed to end at Chicago’s Wrigley Field later this summer.

“This trip has been absolutely incredible. I can’t say how devastated I am that this is how it ends,” Lalla wrote on Facebook. "The places, stories, but especially the wonderful people I’ve met across the country have made this adventure amazing.”

Lalla also encouraged people to donate money to the cause, which helps to fund scholarships and mentoring programs for kids interested in attending college. The $160,000 goal that the organization set was to send two more kids to college, and they had raised over $12,000 at the time of Lalla’s accident.

“Even though this trip has ended on a sour note, it would really give this journey a sense of fulfillment in my eyes to reach the goal and give this journey the ending it deserves,” he said.
