Slick Roads Make for Dangerous Driving Conditions Sunday

Heavy rain and powerful winds are causing dangerous road conditions Sunday.

Greenwich firefighters warned drivers to be aware of slick conditions on wet roads after a rollover crash on the Merritt Parkway northbound near exit 27 Sunday morning.

Minor injuries were reported in that crash.

Emergency crews in Middletown responded to several crashes on Route 9 Sunday.

Conditions will only deteriorate throughout the day. The NBC Connecticut meteorologists have issued a First Alert for heavy rains and powerful winds moving through the state Sunday and into Monday. Rainfall totals between 1 to 3 inches are expected and winds could reach over 60 mph in some parts of the state.

A flash flood watch has been issued for all of Connecticut and drivers are reminded to never drive into standing water in the road.

AAA also warned drivers ahead of the storm to really take the forecast into consideration.

"AAA research shows there are more single-vehicle crashes when the roads are wet than when it snows, and that has a lot to do with people don't adjust their driving habits for the rain the way they do with the snow. So we want to encourage people to slow down, increase their following distance, and take the weather into consideration," said AAA spokesperson Amy Parmenter.

The Meriden Humane Society was asking for volunteers to help them with a flooding problem on Sunday night.

The heavy rain caused flooding in their outdoor kennels, which also led to flooding in their indoor dog room, according to a post on the Meriden Humane Society's Facebook page.

Staff members shoveled a trench to redirect the water, but the heavy rain was falling faster than they could dig, the post said.

Workers asked for volunteers to show up at the shelter, which is located at 311 Murdock Avenue in Meriden, and help dig trenches to drain the water.

Man Was Trapped in Truck After Tree Comes Down in Montville

A man was trapped in a U-Haul truck for hours in the Oakdale section of Montville after a tree came down on Route 161, taking a utility pole and wires with it.

Firefighters said the man was driving a 14-foot U-Haul down Route 161 in Oakdale when a tree came crashing down, bringing a utility pole and wires down with it. The U-Haul was carrying a car on a trailer behind it.

There were wires in front of it so the driver could not move forward or back up.

The driver was told to stay put because first responders were unsure whether those wires were live. The incident commander reports that when Eversource arrived they were unable to verify the status of the wires because they aren’t grounded. The fire department attempted to rescue the man, but he refused, choosing to stay with his belongings instead.

Route 161 will remain closed indefinitely at Flanders and Butlertown roads. Eversource is waiting for both a tree crew and line crew. They do not expect to have the road reopened before daylight.

Local firefighters have responded to multiple incidents across the state Monday morning. Getting to emergencies in the middle of the storm was a challenge for first responders.

The Oakdale Fire Chief tells NBC Connecticut they were called to three homes that were hit by trees.

"A tree that came down on a house and we were actually blocked trying to make a response to that house right away," said Oakdale Fire Captain Rich Waselik.

One on Lake Drive East sustained significant damage. A large old tree is now resting on its roof. The chief said the couple who lives there is now staying with family.

A mobile home was also damaged by a tree, but first responders said the people who live there elected to stay.

More than 1,400 Eversource customers lost power during and after the storm.

About half of women working in America today say they've experienced an unwelcome sexual advance or harassment at work, according to a poll conducted last week by NBC News and The Wall Street Journal.

The poll comes amid the #MeToo movement on social media, in which women responded to accusations of sexual misconduct from famous men in media and beyond by saying it's happened to them as well.

The poll found that two-thirds of Americans believe sexual harassment is widespread, and significant shares of both men and women say the recent spat of news reports about misconduct changed how they think about the issue.

Additionally, 41 percent of men who are now employed admit they've seen women being mistreated at work.

Woman Killed After Boy Jumps Off Overpass, Lands on Her SUV

A 12-year-old boy jumped off an overpass in Virginia Saturday, killing a woman who was driving her SUV on the interstate below, Virginia State Police said.

Marisa Harris, 22, of Olney, Maryland, was driving on eastbound I-66 when the boy jumped from the Cedar Lane overpass and landed on her SUV about 4:18 p.m., state police said.

Harris' boyfriend was sitting in the front passenger seat and was able to steer the car off of the highway and stop it. Harris was pronounced dead at the scene. Her boyfriend was not injured.

Police said the boy was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital and is being treated for life-threatening injuries.

Harris' mother told News4 Harris was a graduate student at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia, studying clinical counseling. She had recently taken a trip to Budapest as part of a college course.

Her mother said if given the chance, Harris could have helped the boy who had jumped. She wanted to use her degree to help children, family members said.

Marymount University officials reacted to the news in a statement Monday morning.

"Every student contributes immeasurably to the community we create together at Marymount University. The loss of any student, particularly in so heartbreaking a manner, grieves us all," the statement said.

The school made counselors avaliable to students and staff. Officials are planning an on-campus memorial.

"It shows us again that we all need to be conscious of what's around us," AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesman Tom Calcagani said.

However, Harris likely did not have enough time to react, AAA said.

There is fencing on the overpass, but it only extends above the train tracks that run between the lanes.

State police originally said a man had fallen off of the overpass.

Police said they are investigating the incident as an attempted suicide.

If you are in crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255 or reach out to the Crisis Text Line by texting 'Home' to 741741.

An American professor held hostage by Taliban since 2016 is seriously ill and in need of immediate medical treatment, the Afghan militant group told NBC News Monday.

Kevin King was kidnapped at gunpoint from the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul alongside Australian colleague Timothy Weeks in August 2016.

A Taliban commander, who asked for anonymity as he was not permitted to speak to the media, said 61-year-old King is in "serious condition" due to his heart disease and urgently requires hospitalization, NBC News reported.

"Whatever we could do, we did to save his life but it's beyond our capacity and resources to provide him the quality of care he needs," the commander said, adding that the militants "should not be held responsible" if King were to die.

Breanna Stewart Details Sexual Abuse in Powerful Blog

Former Uconn basketball star Breanna Stewart detailed in a blog post Monday that she suffered sexual abuse as a child.

Simply titled "Me Too," Stewart wrote about a two-year period when the sexual abuse took place at a relative's house, beginning when she was 9 years old.

"I don't know how to say this part. I haven't told many people," she wrote. "I'm not the most vulnerable person - I don't talk about my feelings much - so this is uncomfortable."

The blog appeared Monday morning in The Players' Tribune, a website that allows professional athletes to connect with fans in their own words, according to the site.

Stewart included details of how the abuse would happen and how she felt helpless.

"I couldn't sleep. I was always on guard."

She talked about the night she decided, as an 11-year-old, to wake up her mother and tell her what had been happening to her.

Stewart's parents called police and the man, who she describes as a construction worker who smelled like cigarettes and dirt, confessed and was arrested, according to Stewart.

She said she immersed herself in basketball. In fact, the day of her predator's arrest, she told her father she wanted to go to basketball practice that night.

Her basketball skills took her from her home near Syracuse, New York to Uconn, where she won four National Championships and left as one of the most popular players in Huskies' history.

Now with the WNBA's Seattle Storm, Stewart says she still carries horrible memories with her.

"Even though I play in front of thousands of people or talk to reporters all the time, I have quiet moments every day that no one sees. That’s often when I think about it. I could be surrounded by my teammates or friends or complete strangers, living life as I normally would, and memories like lightning will strike."

She said she was recently reading Olympic gold medalist McKayla Maroney's account of sexual abuse and having read it, Stewart said she felt "less alone."

Stewart said her father has always told her that one day she might be comfortable enough to talk publicly about what happened to her and that she may even save someone's life.

"That's why I'm writing this. This is bigger than me."

Evacuations were ordered in a Portland neighborhood Monday morning after a tree fell on a propane tank.

A tree came down on a propane tank at a home on Barlett Street around 5 a.m. About a dozen neighbors in the area were evacuated and the road closed while crews sprayed the home down with water and worked to fix the leak.

One neighbor who was not asked to evacuated spoke to NBC Connecticut and described what happened.

"It was alarming when you hear evacuate, evacuate. And that's always what I think about, because years ago a house did blow up, you know, from gas, and one of the firemen did get hurt," said Susan Denny.

Around 9 a.m. the leak was contained and Barlett Street was reopened. No injuries were reported.

Tree Lands on House Soon After Residents Moved Out

A huge tree came down on a historic home in Watertown as powerful storms moved through Connecticut and the owners are just thankful no one was home.

The house on Main Street, which was built in 1919, has been on the market and the closing was supposed to happen this week.

Heidi Capodanno, one of the current owners, said they had just moved out of the house over the weekend, so no one was staying there when the tree came down, damaging the side porch.

Her family lived in the house for about 12 years and they had renovated it before putting it up for sale.

Capodanno said she and her husband are also grateful the new homeowners had not moved in yet.

The Capodannos have contacted their insurance company and will go on from there.

“I’m hoping it’s covered and we’ll just finish the porches, so the new owner will have beautiful new porches,” she said.

Father Shot Daughter's Boyfriend, Ran Over Couple: Police

A North Texas father described as "possessive" fatally shot his daughter's boyfriend and then ran over the couple before driving away and taking his own life Friday evening, authorities said.

Arlington police confirmed 22-year-old Omar Soto was gunned down in the Lincoln Square Shopping Center at about 10 p.m. Friday after walking over to introduce himself to his girlfriend's father.

Soto, who studied architecture at the University of Texas at Arlington, died at the scene. The identity of Soto's girlfriend has not been released; she remains hospitalized with serious injuries after being run over by her father.

Investigators said officers were called to the shopping center after witnesses reported hearing gunshots. Police arrived to find two victims, Soto and his girlfriend.

Detectives soon learned that the girl's father, later identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office as 43-year-old Rafael Brena Arteaga, followed the couple to a movie theater at the shopping center.

Police said as the couple and a female friend exited the theater and walked to their car, Arteaga cut them off.

A witness told police it appeared Soto walked up to Arteaga to introduce himself. Police said when Arteaga asked Soto his name, Soto responded and Arteaga shot him multiple times. Arteaga then got into his vehicle and ran over both Soto and his daughter, before driving away, police said.

Officers later found Arteaga's vehicle on the west side of the city. After trying to communicate with him and receiving no response, officers approached the vehicle and found him dead inside from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to police, Arteaga, who had no criminal record and was a licensed gun carrier, was known to be "over protective" and "possessive" of his daughter.

The investigation into the murder-suicide is ongoing and police have not yet confirmed a motive in the shooting.

Community Reacts

Omar Soto's family and friends gathered at his high school alma mater, Moisés E. Molina High School in Dallas, Sunday afternoon to celebrate his life.

His friends said they did not know the young woman he was seen with and never expected this to happen to Soto.

"He was the greatest guy I ever met," said Carlos Martinez. "So nice, humble person."

Soto's friends said he had his eyes set on grad school and becoming an architect.

"I got to go see him graduate and walk the stage this summer," said a young man to the crowd of about 50 people. "I told him he'd be there for my graduation. I told him I wanted to go to UTA and be an architect just like him."

Each wrote a special message to Soto on a white balloon.
