One of the members of the Trump campaign to come under scrutiny of the Russia election interference investigation, volunteer Carter Page, testified to a House committee that he sought permission from senior campaign officials for a July 2016 trip to Moscow, NBC News reported.

Page had previously said he made the trip in a private capacity, unrelated to the Trump campaign. But last week, Page testified to the House Intelligence Committee that he reported to Trump officials about the trip when he returned.

"Page — after being presented with an email he sent to his campaign supervisors, and which he did not disclose to the committee prior to the interview and despite a subpoena from the Committee — detailed his meetings with Russian government officials and others, and said that they provided him with insights and outreach that he was interested in sharing with the campaign," Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said in a statement.

Page admitted he met with Russian officials and discussed the U.S. election "in general terms." He said he told special counsel Robert Mueller, who is charge of the federal investigation, that he intends to plead the Fifth Amendment.

Geno Auriemma Reacts to Texas Church Shooting

UConn women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma fired off a series of tweets Monday and Tuesday reacting to the mass shooting at a Texas church that left 26 people dead on Sunday.

Auriemma’s Twitter account is not verified, but his daughter Ally Auriemma has previously confirmed that it is him.

The tweets were heavily critical of the conversations surrounding mental health and gun control that have arisen in the wake of the events in Texas.

“How unlucky to live in only country with white guys who have 'mental problems' and assault rifles, who murder Americans.,” Auriemma tweeted.

Politicians on both sides of the debate have weighed in following the tragic events in Texas. Connecticut senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal, both Democrats, made strongly-worded pushes for gun control.

President Donald Trump has said the shooting is an example of a mental health issue in the country, not a gun issue, and argued that tougher gun laws could have actually made things even worse.

At a news conference in South Korea Tuesday where he was asked about "extreme vetting" for gun purchases, Trump said: "If you did what you're suggesting, there would have been no difference three days ago and you might not have had that very brave person who happens to have a gun or a rifle in his trunk."

Trump added that if the Good Samaritan didn't have a gun, "instead of having 26 dead, you would have had hundreds more dead."

NYC DA Plans to Present Weinstein Case to Grand Jury: Sources

The Manhattan district attorney is expected to pursue an indictment of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein to a grand jury, senior officials familiar with the investigation tell News 4 New York. But the sources now say that discussion of presenting the case to a grand jury as early as next week could be pushed back by the D.A.'s office.

Manhattan District Attorney's Office spokeswoman Joan Vollero said late Tuesday “We are not commenting on the investigation or any timeline.”

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance told News 4 earlier in the day, "We'll move as fast as we can to resolve the outstanding issues."

The development comes after NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce told reporters Friday that they were gathering evidence for a possible rape arrest of Weinstein, and that it had presented the case to the district attorney's office.

Vance said his office is working closely with the NYPD on this and other investigations: "We are on the same page when it comes to mission, which is protecting the public and preventing crime and building investigations and cases."

He also urged any victim of sexual assault to contact his office, saying, "When that report is made, it will be investigated."

Boyce said last week that investigators have interviewed actress Paz de la Huerta, who called police on Oct. 26. Boyce said detectives found the "Boardwalk Empire" actress' story believable and corroborated portions of her account.

De la Huerta told CBS News in an interview that aired last Thursday she was first raped in October 2010 after Weinstein gave her a ride home from a party, insisted on having a drink in her apartment and forced himself on her. She said he raped her again in December 2010 after coming to her apartment. She had been drinking and was not in a condition to give consent, the actress told CBS News.

Boyce said the factors that made de la Huerta's story credible included "the ability to articulate each and every minute of the crime, where she was, where they met, where this happened and what he did," he said.

"If this person was still in New York, and it was recent, we'd go right away and make the arrest," Boyce said Friday. "No doubt. But we're talking about a 7-year-old case. And we have to move forward gathering evidence first."

Weinstein’s representatives have not responded to recent requests for comment. Previously, a representative has said that Weinstein denies all allegations of non-consensual sex.

The investigation comes a month after The New York Times published an expose of sexual harassment allegations against Weinstein, leading to his firing from the company he co-founded and his expulsion from the organization that bestows the Academy Awards.

'Well Designed' Email Scam Targets Netflix Users

An Australian cyber security firm is warning Netflix subscribers about a scam email aiming to steal users personal information by tricking them into thinking that accounts are in danger of being suspended, "Today" reported.

MailGuard posted an image of the email in a blog post Friday, calling it "relatively well-designed" because of its ability to generate "individualized messages with specific recipient data."

Users of the streaming service reported receiving suspicious emails that tell recipients their Netflix billing information needs updating and that they must "restart their membership."

The email contains a link that takes subscribers to a fake Netflix website where they are asked to log in and enter information including credit card numbers.

"Of course, this website is completely bogus and is just a mechanism for the scammers to steal the victim’s identity and credit card information,” MailGuard said.

It was not immediately clear how many of Netflix's more than 109 million worldwide subscribers have received the email.

The five-time Super Bowl winning head coach of the New England Patriots was at Wesleyan University Friday when school dedicated the entrance to a school building to Bill Belichick and his daughter, Amanda.

Bill Belichick graduated from Wesleyan University in 1975 and Amanda graduated in 2007. A post on the Wesleyan University Facebook page says the dedication is in honor of the leadership and generosity of the father and daughter alumni.

Wesleyan officials dedicated Belichick Plaza Friday during Wesleyan’s Homecoming and Family Weekend.

The school also presented Bill and Amanda Belichick with personalized Wesleyan sweatshirts.

Any Patriots fan knows that Bill Belichick is famous for cutting the sleeves on his sweatshirts and the university brought scissors to get the sleeves on the new sweatshirt right where he wanted them and make it a true Belichick hoodie. See the video on the New England Patriots website.

Belichick Plaza is located at the Warren Street entrance of the Freeman Athletic Center and it’s home to the Wesleyan Athletics Hall of Fame, which Bill Belichick was named to in 2008.

“The great thing about this school and what this building stands for is that at Wesleyan, we have student athletes here. You don’t have to choose between being a student or being an athlete, you can be both,” Belichick said during the dedication. “That’s what I was in college, and that’s what Amanda was looking for — to participate in intercollegiate athletics and also be challenged at a high level academically. Here, you can really do both.”

Amanda Belichick was captain of the lacrosse team and served as head coach of women’s lacrosse at Wesleyan from 2013 to 2015.

A trove of leaked documents known as the "Paradise Papers" have brought to light the ways wealthy individuals and government officials attempt to avoid taxes and financial transparency. The papers reveal that Wilbur Ross, the United States Secretary of Commerce, maintains a financial stake in a shipping company that does major business with a Russian energy company run in part by Putin's son-in-law even after Ross claimed to have divested all interest in the company at his confirmation hearing.

Connecticut Prison in Enfield to Shut Down as Crime Rate Declines

A prison in Enfield is slated to shut down as the rate of crime and the prison population continues to decline, the governor's office said.

The Enfield Correctional Institution located at 289 Shaker Road will close in early 2018, Governor Dannel Malloy announced on Tuesday.

The building currently holds around 700 offenders who will be transferred to other facilities and save the state approximately $6.5 million in annual operating costs.

"As crime in Connecticut has dropped to its lowest level in two generations, new prison admissions have declined 38 percent over the last ten years, and the prison population has reached its lowest level in 23 years, we’ve been able to create efficiencies by closing outdated facilities and reallocating these resources toward efforts that will further enhance public safety initiatives and keep our neighborhoods even safer," Malloy said.

Right now, there are 14,103 inmates incarcerated in Connecticut's state prison system, which is 836 fewer than last year at this time.

The Department of Correction (DOC) will work with staff members to reassign the approximate 190 workers at the prison.

"We are monitoring the situation to ensure that all aspects of the closure are handled properly, safely and in accordance with our collective bargaining agreement for all our staff," Larry Dorman, the public affairs coordinator for the workers' corrections union, said in a statement. "While we understand the reasons behind the decision to close Enfield CI, we are still saddened by the news and empathetic towards the staff who are negatively impacted."

Enfield Correctional Institution is a Level 3, medium security, dormitory-style facility that originally opened in 1962 as a low-level, pre-release facility, the governor's office said.

The closing of the Enfield facility comes after several other state prison system closures in recent years, including the

The Radgowski Annex Building at the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center in Montville in April 2017 and the Niantic Annex of the York Correctional Institution in January 2016.

Hartford police arrested a man on Tuesday in connection with a September double homicide.

Latroy Johnson, 40, of Windsor, was taken into custody during a probation meeting in Hartford on Tuesday, police said.

Police say Johnson shot four people on Albany Avenue in the early morning hours of September 23, killing two.

One of the victims, 31-year-old Joshua Taylor, died at the scene. Taylor was Johnson's intended target, according to police.

The second victim, 37-year-old Jovan Wooten, returned fire when Johnson started shooting, but he was shot in the face and died of his injuries nearly a week later, police said. Wooten was licensed to carry his weapon, according to police.

The investigation led detectives to Johnson, and they secured an arrest warrant for him on Monday.

Johnson is charged with two counts of murder, first-degree assault, and criminal possession of a firearm.

He is scheduled to be in court on Wednesday.

Repairs Related to Recall May Not Be Covered

A quarter of auto recalls are not repaired on average each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Ignoring a recall notice or waiting to have the repairs done can lead to more problems down the road.

By the time Stephen Smith found out about the recall on his 2013 Dodge Ram, it was just a little too late. Smith said the truck’s alternator failed back in July while he was on the road. Smith knew he wouldn’t make it home to Canaan, so he took it to a dealership in Torrington.

"It literally died as I was pulling into their parking lot," Smith said.

An employee at the dealership told Smith that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) had issued a recall on the alternator at the end of 2016.

"They said everything was great. The recall would cover the alternator, all that," Smith said.

Smith assumed "all that" included two new batteries installed in his diesel truck to replace the ones that were drained, as well as the cost of a rental vehicle.

"If the alternator was under recall and the alternator is what supplies the energy to keep the batteries charged, they should be covered under the warranty," Smith said.

But the remedy outlined in the official recall notice only includes the alternator and makes no mention of batteries or other associated costs.

Smith took his complaint directly to FCA and said one customer service agent told him they’d send over some paperwork to fill out in order for his case to be considered. Another said to be on the lookout for a check but Smith never received either.

When his own efforts stalled, Smith asked NBC Connecticut Responds to take over. Within 24 hours of reaching out to NBC Connecticut's consumer team, Smith received a phone call from FCA.

About a week later, he got a check for $577.93 to cover his out-of-pocket costs.

A spokesperson for FCA told NBC Connecticut, "FCA US is pleased to resolve this situation and regrets any inconvenience it may have caused. However, we urge customers to respond to the instructions on recall notices. Safety is a paramount concern at FCA US. Further, it is prudent for consumers to periodically consult one of the various online search engines, such as checktoprotect.org, to learn if a vehicle may have an open recall."

Information on auto recalls is also available at this website.

New American Citizens Vote for the First Time

It was an especially memorable Election Day for forty of the United States’ newest citizens who were sworn in on Tuesday at Hartford Public Library.

Many of those new citizens expressed joy and excitement as they held crisp naturalization certificates after the ceremony, parts of which date back to the 1790s.

Among those celebrating their newly gained status as citizens was Elena Alexander-Smith, of West Hartford, who came to the United States twelve years ago from Russia. Her children were especially excited for the occassion, and Alexander-Smith said, "they’re born in the United States and it’s a big, meaningful day for them."

Connecticut is amongst fifteen states, plus the District of Columbia, which allow same-day voter registration and voting. That meant Alexander-Smith, who was upset she could not vote in last year’s presidential election, was able to exercise her brand-new right to vote and cast a ballot in today’s West Hartford election.

Candidates for citizenship have to meet language requirements and demonstrate an understanding of U.S. history before becoming naturalized in a process that can take years to complete. Bainey Mahadeo waited seventeen years for his citizenship ceremony after leaving his native Guyana for East Hartford.

An emotional and ecstatic Mahadeo described heading to polls after the ceremony only added to his pride in becoming a citizen, and said, "it would be a privilege to vote and I’m looking forward to that."

CSCU Consolidation Plan Moves Forward

The next step forward in Connecticut State Colleges & Universities (CSCU) President Mark Ojakian’s plan to consolidate Connecticut’s community colleges in one system was taken on Tuesday at Capital Community College in Hartford, where the first of two forums was held to allow faculty members to offer comments.

Ojakian first presented the idea to student’s last month and said it could potentially save millions of dollars.

The plan is to combine the state’s twelve community colleges, allowing students to enroll in classes on multiple campuses and put their credits towards one degree. Ojakian explained, "it will just make it much more efficient for students to go between campuses and it will devote more resources where it’s desperately needed."

A second forum specifically for students will be held at Capital Community College tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A final recommendation will be handed to CSCU’s Board of Regents on December 17.

Voters in West Haven have elected Nancy Rossi to be their new mayor, according to her opponent and incumbent mayor, Ed O'Brien said.

"The residents of West Haven- they are giving me a chance and I will do good by them," Rossi said.

In September, the former city council member Rossi defeated incumbent O’Brien by a razor-thin margin in the Democratic primary by only 136 votes.

O'Brien's name was not on Tuesday's ballot and the former mayor relied on write-in votes.

The incumbent mayor showed up to Rossi's campaign headquarters to congratulate her on winning his job.

"I’m sorry to say the voters spoke and we were not successful," O'Brien said.

During the primary, Rossi, a certified CPA, said she wants to balance West Haven’s budget.

In addition, Rossi said she supports the renovations to West Haven High School, but she has concerns about the funding.

As for public safety, Rossi said she’d like to see more community policing.

New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart was elected for a third term on Tuesday.

Stewart was first elected when she was 26 years old in 2013, making her the youngest mayor in the city's history, according to her website.

She is the only woman to be elected mayor for a second and now third term.

The Republican mayor faced competition from Democratic Merrill Gay and petitioning candidate Al May.

"Stewart has earned accolades for her leadership and results-driven style of governing. She closed a deficit of more than $30 million during her first term, increased the City’s Rainy Day fund to $15 million, and brought stability and responsibility back to the city’s finances," her website reads.

Most recently, Stewart threatened to file a lawsuit against Pan Am railways over reimbursement for the thousands of dollars it cost to deal with a December 2016 derailment. Days later the city received a check from the company

Get Familiar With Airline Refund Policies

$

A West Hartford family reached out to NBC Connecticut Responds after they had issues requesting a refund from one of the country’s most flexible airline carriers.

Southwest Airlines customers typically have three options when booking, with more expensive tiers offering more legroom, priority boarding and refundable tickets. Regardless of pricing tier, Southwest has lenient rules when it comes to rebooking a flight.

Passengers can also get the unused credit issued back on their Southwest account to use at a later date.

The only thing that entitles ticket holders to a full refund is if the refund is requested within 24 hours of purchase.

Life’s not always that simple, and Art from West Hartford can attest. He told NBC Connecticut he booked Southwest’s basic "Wanna Get Away" fare to Las Vegas, but a few weeks before his trip, his doctor told him he can’t fly anytime in the near future.

He missed the 24-hour cancellation window, had non-refundable tickets and had no interest in a Southwest credit since he didn’t know when— or if— he could travel again.

Art said he contacted Southwest and explained his dilemma without success.

Southwest’s policy does not have any conditions that apply to Art, but a company agent offered him an exemption with his doctor’s note.

The agent elaborated that Southwest will take documentation into consideration on a case-by-case basis, without a guaranteed outcome.

In this case, Southwest refunded Art $797.

Pellets and Paintballs Shot at Manchester Homes

One-by-one, neighbors in Manchester realized someone had shot pellets and paintballs at their homes.

"I don't know when it was. No one heard a thing that I know of," resident Marilyn McCann said.

Shannon Garvey said she and McCann walked along McKee Street and found nine out of ten homes marked with bright-colored paint. The paintball that hit Garvey's home left a crack in the siding. She said another neighbor ended up with her glass door shattered.

"I guess the glass company came and handed her BBs from the glass," Garvey said.

Just a short drive away on Ridge Street, Kim Russell found three holes in the side of her home and a cracked window. She said she found a pellet between the window panes.

"I have a 5-month-old granddaughter and if we happened to be in the dining room and that wasn't a double pane window, it could have hurt her," Russell said.

Russell said she has cameras installed but not on that side. She said that's something she plans to change, and she's certainly not alone in wanting to increase security.

"It makes me want to put up security cameras so if it happens again maybe I'll catch it," Garvey said.

Police believe all the incidents are probably related. They do not believe it is an ongoing issue, more likely a one-night crime spree.

Anyone with information is asked to give police a call.
