FIRST ALERT: Accumulating Snow Possible Saturday into Sunday

$
0
0

The NBC Connecticut meteorologists have issued a First Alert for the chance of accumulating snow Saturday night and Sunday morning.

The chance of snow exists, but is far from guarenteed - if this system tracks further south, we will drop this threat. There was enough evidence to warrant this First Alert as of Wednesday.

The best chance for snow will be in southern Connecticut, but the whole state is at risk. The weather could make for tricky travel Sunday morning.

This snow will interrupt a series of unusually mild days Wednesday through next Thursday or so.

Shaun White Apologizes for Dragging American Flag

Snowboarder Shaun White apologized Wednesday for dragging a U.S. flag on the snow after his dramatic gold medal victory in the men’s halfpipe, but said he did not know he had let the flag touch the ground.

“I remember being handed the flag but I was trying to put my gloves on and hold the flag and get board,” he told reporters afterward. “Honestly, if there was anything, I definitely didn’t mean any disrespect. The flag that’s flying on my house right now is way up there. So sorry for that. But I’m definitely proud — very proud — to be a part of Team USA and being an American and to be representing for everyone back home.”

White reclaimed his Olympic halfpipe title, landing back-to-back 1440s to knock Japan’s Ayumu Hirano out of the top spot, and at the same time won the United States’ 100th all-time gold medal at the Winter Olympics.

But White, who also won his third gold medal, immediately got criticism on Twitter for allowing the flag touch the ground several times while he was overcome with emotion following his career-capping performance.

One of the harsher tweets reported by the Washington Post: "@shaunwhite way to be classy. You win the gold medal and then proceed to drag the American flag across the ground. No respect. No excuses for this."

FEMA Funding Ending For Some Displaced by Hurricane Maria

Time is running out for some families displaced by Hurricane Maria. FEMA funding, which paid for their lodgings in the US, is set to end for many of those families.

Wilmarie Cotto was pregnant when Hurricane Maria ripped through Puerto Rico. She soon found herself living without electricity or other basic services, so last month she and her weeks-old infant traveled to Connecticut.

"It's been rough. It's been a little hard," said Cotto.

On Tuesday night, Cotto picked up some much-needed supplies at the CREC Foundation Hurricane Relief Center in Hartford. It's a place that organizers say has helped more than 600 families with donated food, clothing, and other services to get them back on their feet.

"I see what the families have gone through or what they're still going through. They have nothing," said CREC Communications Director Aura Alvarado. "I have so many success stories. They found housing, they found jobs, they got vehicles, the kids are in school, and they're doing well. But there are a handful of families that need more support."

Up until now, FEMA paid for displaced families to stay at one of several places, including the Red Roof Plus in Hartford, but for some, that money comes to an end on Wednesday.

Alvarado says they've been working quickly to help place families in more permanent housing.

"CREC has been able to provide 13 families with deposits so they can get into the apartments. Some of them have moved this past weekend, some are moving tomorrow and throughout the weekend," said Alvarado.

"I am trying to go to FEMA to get an extension because I'm supposed to leave tomorrow the hotel and they are not willing to give me an extension," said Cotto.

Cotto says she's found an apartment but that she can't move in for a couple more weeks. Despite not getting an extension with FEMA, Cotto says she and the baby will be able to stay with her sister who did receive an extension until they can get into the new place.

For those who've received an extension, they'll be able to stay in a hotel until the middle of March. As for the CREC Foundation Hurricane Relief Center, Alvarado says everything that's donated to them goes back out to families in need.

“We would not have been able to do this without Catholic Charities and Capital Workforce and Red Cross and FEMA and Foodshare and the list goes on and all the amazing volunteers," said Alvarado.

She says that due to a lack of funds to rent the space, the center will close in March. She says after that, help will have to transition from a center-based model to a community-based model.

"We're going to be accepting food and toiletry donations until the very last day," said Alvarado. "We're going to make sure everything in this building gets used by someone."

If you'd like to help families displaced by the hurricane, organizers say you can reach out to Catholic Charities or the Salvation Army.

Pyeongchang Games by the Numbers: Shaun White's Stunning Win, Fierce Winds Shut Down Races

The day's drama at the Pyeongchang Games came in men's snowboarding as Shaun White reclaimed his halfpipe gold in spectacular style. The U.S. men's curling team scored a win, but high winds once again kept skiers off the slopes. Here's a look at the 2018 Winter Games by the numbers.

100 — Team USA won its 100th gold medal in its history of competing in the Winter Olympics after Shaun White won gold in the men’s halfpipe final.

3 — Shaun White became the first snowboarder to win three gold medals after he edged out Japan’s Ayumu Hirano in his third and final run in the men’s halfpipe final Wednesday morning in Pyeongchang.

2 — Team USA’s alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin has been thwarted twice by high wind conditions that have postponed her signature event: the slalom. She continues to wait to defend her slalom gold medal from Sochi.

11-7 — Team USA beat South Korea in the first round of men’s team curling, 11-7. The U.S. struggled in the last two Olympics, with 10th and ninth-place finishes. “Definitely not the best we can put out there, but very solid,” John Shuster, the skip, told reporters after the game. “We executed the basic shots and when we got misses and half shots from the other team we capitalized on it.”

65.55 — The Knierims scored a 65.55 in the pairs short program to advance to the pairs free skate final Thursday morning (Wednesday night in the U.S.) The song that helped them earn the 14th-place finish? “Come What May” from “Moulin Rouge.”

92 More than 2,900 athletes from 92 countries are competing in the Pyeongchang Games, making it the biggest Winter Olympics ever. Its popularity comes despite tensions on the Korean peninsula though those were eased once North Korea decided to participate in the Games and even join with the South Koreans on the rink for one women’s hockey team.

168 The International Olympic Committee banned Russia from the Pyeongchang Games because of its “unprecedented systematic manipulation” of anti-doping regulations, but invited 168 Russian athletes to compete under a neutral flag and in neutral uniforms as an “Olympic Athlete from Russia.” A last minute appeal from Russia to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to overturn a ban against 47 athletes and coaches failed though earlier it did overturn the bans of 28 Russians. The IOC declined to invite any from that group.

No one was hurt when flames ripped through a home in Lisbon, destroying the building early Wednesday morning.

Departments from seven towns responded to the fire at 26 Paper Mill Road Wednesday. The initial call came in at 3 a.m.

Firefighters said no one as hurt, but the house is a total loss.

Neighbor Brenda Jones said the family was out when the flames started.

“They just said that they had left for an hour to go check on another property that they own, I guess, and she wanted Pop-Tarts, so they went out to get Pop-Tarts and an hour later they said they came back home and it was burning. It was gone. She was like really upset because she lost everything," Jones said.

“I feel bad for them. They have nothing. She didn’t even have a coat. I feel really bad because they were renovating the place. They’ve been there for about three years and they were redoing the place," she added.

The road is closed while crews continue to monitor for hot spots.

The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Men Armed With AK-47s Storm Texas Game Room, Shoot Woman: Police

A woman was seriously injured in a shooting early Wednesday morning when five armed men stormed a Fort Worth game room and indiscriminantly opened fire, police said.

The five armed men, most carrying handguns and one carrying a long rifle, walked into the gaming hall on the 3200 block of North Beach Street and immediately began shooting. At some point in the gunfire, an 18-year-old woman was shot in the leg and transported to a hospital in serious condition, police said.

Surveillance video from several cameras inside the business on the 3200 block of North Beach Street show five men approach the game room, enter and then show no hesitation before firing into the hall. Muzzle flashes can easily be seen in the video quickly followed by debris from walls and ceiling tiles filling the frame.

Hearing the gunfire, players took cover underneath gaming machines as the five men spread out throughout the gaming hall.

In the video four of the armed men can be seen continually tried to gain access to another part of the building by kicking or slamming into an object out of view.

Meanwhile, one of the other members of the group stole wallets and cash from the gamers, some of whom reported being kicked or pistol-whipped.

After about 10 minutes inside the building, the armed group ran from the hall before officers arrived. Police have not said what the men stole other than a few personal belongings from the players.

Fort Worth police are asking for the public's help in identifying the men, most of whom wore masks that partially covered their faces.Without clear photos, police said they are relying on people recognizing the distinctive outfits or guns used by some of the armed men.

One of the men in the video can be seen wearing a clown shirt and/or costume while carrying the long-barreled rifle. Clothing worn by the other men in the video were simple, solid-colored hoodies with the exception of one man who didn't bother to cover his face while wearing a red, white and black jacket.

Detectives reported a large number of shell casings at the scene of the shooting. The investigation into the armed robbery is ongoing.

Editor's Note: Initial reports from a public information officer with the City of Fort Worth stated that the men fired "what appers to be AK-47 rifles," police have since changed their charaterization of the weapons and now refer to them as long rifles, this article has been changed to reflect that.

Dow Drops More Than 100 Points After Hot Inflation Data

U.S. stocks opened lower on Wednesday after a data release showed inflation rose more than expected last month, CNBC reported.

The Dow Jones industrial average declined 127 points at the open. The S&P 500 fell 0.4 percent, with energy as the worst-performing sector. The Nasdaq composite pulled back 0.3 percent.

The consumer price index rose 0.5 percent in January. Economists polled by Reuters expected a gain of 0.3 percent. Investors also digested weaker-than-expected retail sales for last month.

"You got the worst-case scenario with this economic data," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley FBR. "You got a hotter-than-expected CPI number and weaker retail sales. Unfortunately, CPI gets much more focus than normal because of the wage growth number we saw" in the last jobs report.

New Technology Could Save the Lives of Flu Patients

Flu-related deaths are on the rise in Connecticut and nationwide, but doctors at Hartford Hospital say they have a treatment option that could mean the difference between life and death.

Victoria Cordero says her husband Louis almost died from the flu two years ago, but survived because of a machine called ECMO.

“People don’t realize how serious it is,” she said, “how seriously ill you can become. I thank the staff at Hartford Hospital, the machine and of course, God for saving my husband’s life.”

ECMO stands for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation. Doctor Jason Gluck, Medical Director, Mechanical Circulatory Support/ECMO at Hartford Hospital, said when a patient is in severe respiratory distress, ECMO does the work of the heart and lungs outside the body.

Gluck says the treatment can take a patient’s chances of survival from 10 percent to 60 or 70 percent - and it’s mobile.

“We have it here at Hartford, but we can actually bring this technology to anywhere in 150 miles radius from around the hospital,” Dr. Gluck said.

With cases of flu on rise, more hospitalizations and severe complications this season, Louis Cordero says Ecmo is something everyone should know about.

“If you’re sick please get to a hospital,” he said.

Woody’s, an iconic hot dog joint in Hartford, is closing its doors after more than four decades.

The business, named for its owners Gary and Cindy Wood and located at 915 Main Street in Hartford, was opened in 1977. Its walls are decorated with all manner of sports memorabilia that celebrate the Miami Dolphins.

The restaurant confirmed on Facebook that it would be closing at the end of February and selling that memorabilia.

Cindy told NBC Connecticut that they made the decision because it's really time for her and her husband to take a step back and enjoy the results of their hard work.

I have customers that I have their grandchildren that come to me now, and they are customers that Gary and I genuinely we love them, I mean really really we love them. It’s just been a great experience to be in our community with our people and just be able to share that with them and try to do the best for them we’ve always tried to do," Cindy said.

Woody’s is a popular spot known for its variety of offerings including toppings from basics like mustard and relish to heavier options like bacon and cheese, sauerkraut and swiss cheese, chili, and even peppers and mozzarella cheese with marinara sauce.

Man vs. Food once made the trip and indulged in the famous Deputy Dog, which is covered in barbeque pulled pork and cheese.

The couple does plan to take on some catering opportunities, but the immediate plan after closing is to take their first vacation in ten years.

The fire at the Grantmoor Motor Lodge on the Berlin Turnpike in Newington early Wednesday morning was set, according to Newington Fire Marshal Chris Schroeder, and the case has been turned over to the Newington Police Department.

Officials said the fire started around 4 a.m. in room 104 in the 93-room motel at 3000 Berlin Turnpike and firefighters contained it to the room where it started.

It took firefighters about half an hour to get the flames under control and a parent, a child and four Newington police officers needed to go to the hospital.

The four police officers were evaluated for because of smoke inhalation concerns, but are expected to be OK.

The parent and a child who were transported might have been in the room where the fire started, officials said. Their conditions were not immediately clear.

An investigation revealed major structural problems unrelated to the fire spread and the building has been condemned.

The lodge's management refunded its customers for a week. The company has not returned NBC Connecticut's inquiries.

It’s not clear how the fire was set. Newington Police are investigating.

'Numerous Fatalities,' Multiple Injured at Fla. HS Shooting; Suspect in Custody

A suspect is in custody after a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that left at least one person dead and at least 20 injured Wednesday afternoon, sources told NBC News.

Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie said there were "numerous fatalities" but the exact number was unknown. At least 14 victims have been taken to local hospitals, the Broward County twitter account said, and the scene is still active.

An official briefed on the investigation identified the suspect as Nicolas Cruz, who is approximately 18 years old. He was also taken to a nearby hospital, and police escorted him out of the hospital about an hour later. The extent of the suspect's injury is unclear.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel called the shooting a "horrific, homicidal and detestable act."

He said officials are still working to clear the school. Douglas Stoneman High School is one of the biggest schools in Broward County with about 3,000 students.

Israel said the suspect was a former student at the school. "I don't know why he left I don't know when he left. He was not a current student. I was told there was no confrontation. He was taken into arrest without incident," Israel said.

An afternoon fire drill at the school created a scene of chaos before gunshots were heard Wednesday afternoon.

Multiple students confirmed that there was a fire drill early in the morning, and when the fire alarm rang again later in the afternoon, one student told NBC 6 that "no one expected anything that was gonna happen."

School board officials said staff and students heard what sounded like gunfire shortly before dismissal, and the school went on an immediate lockdown.

Footage showed dozens of officers and ambulances at the school as students ran or walked out with hands up. Some reported victims were seen being carried out of the school.

Runcie said at least one school employee may have been injured.

"I believe there's an administrator or teacher that is involved, there may be more," he said.

Footage posted on social media showed students cowering under desks in one classroom as gunshots rang out.

Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., told MSNBC just before 4 p.m. that "there were a number of fatalities," citing Broward County officials, and that the shooter was not in custody, although authorities believed they knew who he was.

"This is a really bad day," Nelson said.

NBC 6 spoke to the older brother of one student, who said his sister, a sophomore, was safe but “trembling in shock” at the scene unfolding at her high school.

“It’s just complete chaos out there,” he said a short distance from the school. “She was numb.”

NBC 6 also spoke with a father who was able to communicate with his child inside the school. "I'm relieved that [the suspect] has been captured, at least that part of its over. The stress from this is too much." He said his child is safe.

Coral Springs Police tweeted that students and teachers should remain barricaded inside the school until officers can reach them.

"Worried parents of Douglas HS students, while this is Parkland scene (handled by BSO) we are assisting. We understand you are worried for your children (and nearby Middle School children, which was put on lock down as a precaution)," Coral Springs Police tweeted.

ATF agents were responding to the school to assist BSO and Coral Springs PD, officials said.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said he has spoken with law enforcement about the shooting. President Donald Trump tweeted his "prayers and condolences to the families of the victims."

"This is just the worst kind of tragedy," said Congressman Ted Deutch, who represents the district that includes parts of Parkland. "It's a great community and it's just so awful to see the images coming out of there."

Subway Clerk Tackles Robber Outside Shop: Police

A clerk at a Windsor Locks Subway sandwich shop stopped what appeared to be an armed robbery outside the shop by tackling the robber, according to police.

Police said a man walked into the Subway on Route 75 with what appeared to be a gun around 5:18 a.m. Tuesday and demanded money from the register as well as from the clerk. He left without money because the store only deals in credit cards at night and the clerk had no cash on-hand, according to police.

The man then walked up to a car in the parking lot, pointed a gun at the driver and tried to rob a person, according to officials.

During the attempted robbery, the Subway employee went outside the store, recognized that the gun was fake, wrestled the robber to the ground and held him until police arrived, police said.

Police identified the suspect as 28-year-old Bryan Minor-Doherty, of Windsor Locks, and said he had a facsimile handgun. He has been charged with two counts of criminal attempt to commit robbery, two counts of threatening and two counts of breach of peace.

Minor-Doherty was injured during the struggle and was transported to St. Francis Hospital.

He was later released and booked on a $25,000 bond.
