Abandoned Baltic Mill Ravaged by Fire

Crews from more than a dozen fire departments are responding to a fire on Bushnell Hollow Road in Baltic.

Officials said the fire broke out at Building 10 of the abandoned Baltic Mills Complex.

Sprague First Selectman Cathy Osten confirmed that everyone was safe at this time. Osten said the building was slated for demolition, and there were two contractors in the building when the fire broke out. Osten said it appears one of the contractors was using a tool that caused sparks which may have led to the fire. The fire marshal is on scene investigating.

Baltic Fire Chief Bob Tardiff said 80 to 100 firefighters responded to battle the blaze. One firefighter is being evaluated for chest pains. No injuries have been reported.

Building 10, which was what was left from a previous fire in 1999, is destroyed.

The fire has also spread to some other buildings and brush in the area. At one point crews had to contain a four-acre brush fire started by the wind blowing embers all over, Tardiff said.

Officials said dry weather and wind are hampering firefighting efforts.

Fire officials at the scene said crews from 19 departments are battling the fire, including Baltic, Lisbon, Scotland, Canterbury, Jewett City, Franklin, Atwood Hose in Plainfield as well as Occum, Yantic in Norwich and Taftville, which are all in Norwich.

Crews from Griswold, Bozrah, East Great Plains, Lebanon, Windham Center, Plainfield, Willimantic and the city of Norwich have also responded.

The smoke was so heavy it appeared on weather radar.

Traffic will be closed in the area for hours, possibly all night.

Esty Receives Warm Reception in Meriden

Rep. Elizabeth Esty is back in Connecticut with what’s expected to be a regular public schedule.

Her return to her home state and her district comes weeks after she announced she would not run for a fourth term.

Esty’s decision comes after her conduct, electing to keep her former chief of staff working in her office even after allegations of assault and abuse were brought to her attention, came to light.

“I just wanted to let you know, and you may have heard, I am retiring from Congress but I will be in through the end of this year and I will continue to fight as I have for the last five and a half year, efforts to change social security or Medicare to privatize or socialize them,” Esty told a group of seniors in a Meriden Senior Center.

With near uniformity, those in attendance welcomed Esty to their luncheon. Esty’s district office is in the same building, and she was very familiar with many of the residence.

“She helps a lot of people. She was there for them,” said Nancy Flagg, a resident at the Meriden Senior Center on West Main Street. “She used to call me and I used to listen to her on the phone. She’s just a great person and what they’re doing is terrible.”

Esty says with her remaining time in Congress she plans to focus on her priorities, like looking out for seniors, veterans, and the poor. She said she would actively fight any legislation aimed at privatizing Social Security or Medicare.

“That’s one of the reasons I’m staying in my seat is because if bad legislation comes up, I want to be able to vote against it for this district and when there are good things we can get done I want to be able to vote for that and champion the things we want to get done,” she said.

Esty told NBC Connecticut last week in Washington DC that she made mistakes that she regretted nearly three years ago relating to the alleged conduct of her former chief of staff, Tony Baker. Esty says she wants a House Ethics investigation to continue aimed at looking at her conduct in the matter. She says at the time, May of 2016, she followed protocols explained to her by the House Ethics Office and by labor attorneys, which led to a non-disclosure agreement with Baker.

“If indeed it comes back that nothing was done wrong, then that tells us how much we need to change policies in Congress.” She also said she is working to change the policies when it comes to harassment in the US Capitol and wants to establish a formal Human Resources office to force the legislative branch to act more like a professional workplace.

Esty has more than $1.5 million in campaign contributions sitting in her account, and she says she will determine what to do with those funds after she leaves Congress.

“Campaign and political stuff can wait until after December. Right now, there are urgent needs of the country and urgent needs of this district that need tending to.”

Her constituents in Meriden, like Patricia DeMaria, say Esty should remain on the job, and pursue reelection.

“I think she’s very good and I like people who do good things and they know how about to go about it to get it,” DeMaria said. “I think she should just keep on going and do whatever she can to continue her good work.”

An administrator at Montville High School has been placed on leave, according to a statement from the assistant superintendent.

In a statement, Assistant Superintendent Laurie Pallin confirmed that Montville High School's acting assistant principal has been placed on leave due to an investigation into comments made to a student.

Phil Orbe was serving as assistant principal at Montville High School after three administrators were arrested as part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged “fight club” at the school.

"Late Monday afternoon, the acting Montville High School Assistant Principal was been placed on paid leave pending the outcome of an investigation which only relates to comments made to a student. I want to be very clear that this has absolutely nothing to do with the previous situation, in which three other administrators were put on leave,” Pallin said in a statement.

Officials said an assistant principal at Leonard J. Tyl Middle School, who previously worked as an assistant principal at the high school, will cover Orbe’s responsibilities.

No other details were immediately available.

New Haven Public Schools Trying to Close Budget Shortfall

New Haven Public School leaders are trying to figure out how to close a multi-million dollar budget shortfall for the upcoming school year, which could mean significant changes to the school district's staff and even how many schools it operates.

The budget plans were discussed at a Board of Education meeting Monday night.

Dr. Carol Birks is beginning her tenure as New Haven Schools superintendent facing a budget shortfall of $20 million. Some of her suggestions to fix that could include closing schools and eliminating staff.

“We may have to make some reductions. I just want to put that out and be very transparent about that. Because we cannot continue to operate in the manner in which we have for the past few years,” Birks said.

The New Haven School district serves 21,000 students.

“We’re not going to compromise the educational program, but we have to make sure that we right-size this district so we’re having an effective organization that’s meeting the learning and teaching needs of all of our students,” Birks said.

Birks said she and school leaders are looking at all of the city’s 48 schools and more than 4,000 employee positions to determine where they can spend more efficiently, and save wherever possible. Birks said a reduction in the number of schools the district operates is on the table.

With little more than two months left before the start of the next fiscal year, the superintendent seems hopeful that this gap can be closed while keeping the education system strong.

“We’re going to look closely at how we’re spending those dollars. How we are deploying our staff and putting people on the right seats on the bus,” she said.

The fiscal year ends June 30. Before then, the Board of Education will host town halls and budget forums to discuss the coming changes.

A raging inferno engulfed several businesses in the Bronx early Tuesday, sending a black plume of smoke into the air as ferocious flames licked the gear of firefighters working to put them out.

The FDNY says the four-alarm fire broke out around 5:30 a.m. at 316 E. 194th Street, near Marion Avenue, in Fordham.

By around 7 a.m., firefighters appeared to have the upper hand on the flames, but the fire was still smoking. No injuries have been reported. The FDNY told News 4 at the scene that nobody was inside any of the burning stores.

Chopper 4 over the scene and showed the inferno chewing through a row of business. The thick smoke and blinding flames were so large it appeared to be taking over half a block. A laundromat, a pharmacy, at least one restaurant and several other businesses were up in flames, Chopper 4 showed.

The cause of the blaze wasn't immediately clear.

A statement on the City of Danbury’s web site said the water main break is affecting all water customers east of Main Street, east of North Street up to Route 84 and south to South Street.

The city is working on repairing a major 16-inch water line that suffered a break on Tamarack Avenue around 4 p.m. Monday and will inform residents when they no longer need to boil water.

Broadview Middle School and the Henry Abbott Technical School are closed today because of the water main break.

Homeless NYC Girl Scout Troop Shatters Cookie Sale Goal

The first-ever homeless Girl Scouts troop of New York City has broken yet another barrier, smashing their goal of selling 6,000 boxes of cookies nearly six times over.

Girl Scout Troop 6000's initial goal was to sell 6,000 boxes of cookies at their first stand sale at Kellogg's NYC Café in Union Square. But by the end of the six-day sale, the troop sold more than 32,500 boxes.

Customers not only stood in hour-long lines to purchase multiple boxes of cookies, but many also made monetary donations to the troop, totaling more than $15,000, to help pay for activities and trips, according to the organization.

"I’m so excited that I got a chance to sell cookies, just like any other Girl Scout," said Sanaa, a 10-year-old from the troop.

The Girl Scouts also partnered with Kellogg to create six limited-edition specialty cereals, which were all on the cafe's menu during the cookie sale week. One hundred percent of the proceeds of the specialty cereals were donated to the troop.

Meridith Maskara, CEO of Girl Scouts Greater New York, said the sale was a "resounding success," and gave girls in Troop 6000 the opportunity to be "cookie business bosses."

Proceeds from cookie sales go to fund troop activities selected by the girls, including trips, camp experiences, and other programs and events.

Troop 6000 was created in 2016 by Girl Scouts of Greater New York, Mayor de Blasio and the city Department of Homeless Services to serve girls living in the New York City shelter system.
