The shooting death of a prominent forensic psychiatrist in Arizona is connected to the slayings of two paralegals on Friday, police say.

According to NBC News, Police in the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale said the slayings of Veleria Sharp, 48, and Laura Anderson, 49, were related to the fatal shooting a day earlier of Dr. Steven Pitt.

Pitt had assisted in high-profile murder cases including the investigation into the 1996 death of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey, who was found dead at her home in Boulder, Colorado.

Scottsdale police spokesman, Sgt. Ben Hoster, would not disclose what connected the first three victims, saying that was part of the investigation.

A dog named Alejandro was found dead after flying on a Delta plane destined for Newark, a spokesperson for the airline said.

The dog, which was traveling by cargo with its family, was found unresponsive in its crate in a cargo shipping facility in Detroit after flying there from Phoenix, Delta’s spokesperson said.

The flight was scheduled to travel from Phoenix to Detroit and then to Newark, the spokesperson said.

Vomit was found inside the crate, according to the spokesperson.

“We know pets are an important member of the family, and we are focused on the well-being of all animals we transport. Delta is conducting a thorough review of the situation and have been working directly with Alejandro’s family to support them however we can,” the airline said in a statement.

“As part of that review, we want to find out more about why this may have occurred to ensure it doesn’t happen again, and we have offered to have Alejandro evaluated by a veterinarian to learn more,” the statement added.

Evan Oshan, an attorney who is representing Alejandro’s owner, Michael Dellagrazie, told NBC New York he was in Detroit trying to get Alejandro’s remains, as Delta has yet to return them.

A second Delta spokesperson said the airline had come to an agreement with Oshan about when and where he could retrieve the remains. That meeting was scheduled for Saturday in Detroit.

Two climbers fell to their deaths while climbing the Freeblast Route on El Capitan inside Yosemite National Park Saturday morning.

Park Rangers received 911 calls reporting the falls at approximately 8:15 a.m. Rescue staff responded to the scene but the climbers, identified as Jason Wells, 46, from Colorado and Tim Klien, 42, from Palmdale, did not survive.

"We found that two climbers had fallen, the fall did result in a fatal fall," said Park Ranger Jamie Richards.

Last month, another park visitor died after falling from the Half Dome cable at Yosemite. It was the first fatality in the Half Dome cables since 2010 and the first visitor fatality in 2018, officials said.

Earlier in May, Hans Florine, a famed rock climber also fell while climbing The Nose of El Capitan. He survived with a broken heel and ankle.

Florine knew both of the deceased men and says Klein was known for his speed and knowledge of El Capitan.

"He's actually climbed the nose twice in a day," Florine said. "Which, no one else has done except has done, except for his partner who was with him. Including me, I haven't even climbed the nose twice in a day."

Klein was a teacher at Palmdale High School in Southern California.

"He doing what he loved, by all accounts, what I know of both Jason and Tim, yeah, they were doing what they loved," Florine said.

The National Park Service is still investigating what caused both men to fall.

A brush fire in Laguna Beach and Aliso Viejo continued to burn into the morning hours on Sunday as flames scorched hundreds of acres.

The wind-driven Aliso Fire was zero percent contained and at 200 acres as of around 7 a.m. Sunday, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

The mandatory evacuation orders were lifted for Aliso Viejo around 9 p.m. Saturday, as the fire was no longer deemed a threat. However, the Top of the World neighborhood in Laguna Bach remained under evacuation order Sunday morning.

At one point, the fire forced mandatory evacuations of 2,145 homes and quickly grew to more than 250 acres on Saturday afternoon. The fire was first reported shortly after 1 p.m. and quickly grew from an original half-acre.

It burned in the Aliso Woods Canyon behind Soka University, the Orange County Fire Authority said. The blaze encompassed parts of both Laguna Beach and Aliso Viejo and forced evacuations in both communities.

The rapid growth of the first was best illustrated when it more than doubled from 70 acres at approximately 4 p.m. to 150 acres at approximately 5 p.m. with zero percent containment, per the Laguna Beach Police Department.

At 5:30 p.m. the fire had burned 200 acres, and the Orange County Fire Authority updated that the fire had grown to more than 250 acres at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Residents in the Top of the World neighborhood all the way to Alta Laguna Park in Laguna Beach were being evacuated as more than 400 firefighters battled flames.

By Sunday morning, those firefighters were still on the scene trying to get a handle on the blaze.

Growing Number of Fatal Crashes Linked to Drug Use: Study

$

A new study finds that a growing number of drivers involved in deadly accidents are testing positive for drugs, especially opioids and marijuana, NBC News reported. It is unclear, though, whether the drugs are actually the culprit in those crashes.

The group that released the study, the Governors Highway Safety Association, cautions that it is difficult to fully understand the extent to which “drugged driving” is becoming a problem.

“Drugs can impair, and drug-impaired drivers can crash,” said report author Dr. Jim Hedlund, a former senior official with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “But it’s impossible to understand the full scope of the drugged driving problem because many drivers who are arrested or involved in crashes, even those who are killed, are not tested for drugs. Drivers who are drug-positive may not necessarily be impaired.”

The findings come at a crucial time, as the U.S. faces an opioid epidemic, and more and more states are legalizing marijuana.

"It's a great day for Puerto Rico. The parade is awesome," said Jose Mendez of Hartford.

The more than a mile long parade route was full of music and dancing from Wethersfield Avenue to Main Street, ending at Bushnell Park where the Festival del Coqui was taking place.

The Festival del Coqui featured some of the best local Puerto Rican talent including solo artists, groups and cultural acts. A Hartford man is facing charges that include kidnapping after he tried to steal a car with a child inside on Saturday morning, according to police.

Officers say they were called to McDonald's on Albany Avenue around 8:20 a.m. for reports of a kidnapping and a stolen vehicle. Investigators later learned that an 11-year-old boy was sitting in a running car while he waited for his father to return from the restaurant when 44-year-old Edward Asberry of Hartford jumped into the driver's seat and drove off.

Once the child realized it wasn't his father driving, police say the child physically assaulted Asberry. Asberry then stopped the car, took a book bag from inside and ran away, officers say.

Witnesses were able to help police with Asberry's identity, description and direction of travel. Officers were then able to arrest him at the intersection of Garden and Mather Streets.

The car was then returned back to the boy's father, police say.

Asberry is now facing kidnapping, larceny and risk of injury to a minor charges.

On Sunday, seniors at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School walked across the stage to accept their diplomas and become graduates of class of 2018.

After a difficult school year due to a shooting on campus in February that left 17 dead, including four seniors, comedian Jimmy Fallon attended Sunday’s ceremony to give a commencement address.

Fallon gave an uplifting message, mixed with some humor.

“Today you are graduating from high school. You should be incredibly proud of yourselves. That doesn’t mean you should rest on your laurels, or your yannys,” said Fallon.

Fallon also tweeted about the event, saying they should keep making a difference in the world.

“Keep making good choices,” said the late night talk show host. “I’m not saying it because you need to learn it. I’m saying it because you already taught it to all of us. I can’t promise that life will be easy, but if you make good choices and keep moving forward, I can promise that it will get better in ways you haven’t even thought of.”
