Norwich Tech to Provide Ramp at Graduation for Student

There will be a ramp at the Norwich Tech High School graduation so a student in a wheelchair can cross the stage with his classmates.

Kyle Tempesta spoke with NBC Connecticut earlier this month when he learned there would not be a ramp for the stage at graduation.

Tempesta said a school staff member told him there would be no ramp at the ceremony in the gym.

“She basically told me that I was going to be unable to cross the stage at graduation with the rest of my class and I would have to receive my diploma kind of off to the side out of the spotlight unlike everyone else,” Tempesta said in a previous interview.

When NBC Connecticut reached out, a spokesperson for the Connecticut Department of Education that runs the school said the administration was working on a solution.

NBC Connecticut reached out to the local ramp rental company Amramp, which offered to help out.

On Friday, the state confirmed that Amramp will be providing the ramp for Tempesta’s graduation ceremony next Thursday, so he can cross the stage like all the other graduates.

Woman Hospitalized With Serious Burns After Manchester House Fire

A woman is in the hospital after she was burned in a fire at a multi-family house in Manchester early Saturday morning.

According to officials, the 48-year-old woman was awakened by smoke and fire in her apartment at 56 1/2 School Street around 3:20 a.m. She woke up her neighbor who then called 911.

The woman was injured in the fire and required help from her neighbors to get out of the building. Firefighters treated her on scene before she was transported to the hospital with potentially life-threatening thermal injuries, according to authorities. Six other people inside of the building were all able to escape without injury, fire officials say.

When firefighters arrived, they say they saw light smoke coming from the second floor windows in the front of an apartment. Once they were inside, they say they encountered a high heat and heavy smoke in the apartment. They were able to determine that nobody was still inside the building.

The fire was contained to a single apartment, officials say, but the house has been deemed uninhabitable by the local building department until repairs can be made.

The American Red Cross and Manchester Human Services are assisting everyone who is displaced from the fire.

The Fire Marshal is working to determine where and how the fire started.

Excited Public Gets First Chance to Ride the Rails on New Hartford Line

The goal of the new Hartford line is to get cars off the roads during the work week and connect Connecticut commuters from the shoreline to the capital city and beyond. However, this weekend, passengers who hopped aboard the new Hartford rail line were looking to ride for pleasure.

“The last time I rode north from Hartford was 1958. When I was three years old,” explained Roger Ristau of Willimantic.

Ristau, a self-described train enthusiast, wanted to recreate his ride to Springfield, Massachusetts 60-years ago. The inaugural ride attracted many train aficionados, like Gary Grahl, who drove in from New York City to be on the first train out of the station.

“During my life I’ve been at closings. The last train here, the last trolley there and it’s nice to be at a place where something is new. I’d like to be on the first instead of the last,” said Grahl.

Mike and Kam Perotti had a day of errands and household chores planned, but when they heard about the free ride, they decided to hop aboard and celebrate their 34th wedding anniversary in the Big Apple instead.

“We’re going to take the train into New Haven and then from New Haven into New York,” said Kam.

After this weekend, a one-way ticket will cost eight-dollars.

“Although there were some trains on this line they were relatively infrequent and expensive, people tended not to use it because it was expensive. What we’ve done is lower the fairs,” explained Rich Andreski, CTDOT Transit Bureau Chief.

The $768-million-dollar project was paid for with state and federal funds and took three years to build.

Officials say the train will take 45 minutes to get to Hartford from New Haven, making three stops along the way in Wallingford, Meriden, and Berlin, and 81 minutes from New Haven to Springfield, stopping in Windsor and Windsor Locks. From there, passengers will be able to board others lines and travel even further.

With children in New York City and Boston, the Perrottis expect to be frequent passengers.

“I’ve always thought it would be great to have a train from Hartford to New York and Hartford to Boston so when I heard about this I was super excited,” Mike said.

“Although the free rides end this weekend, free parking will continue at some of the stations along the Hartford line until September 3rd.

Officials from multiple agencies are monitoring bear sightings in Rocky Hill on Saturday.

Police in Rocky Hill say they received several reports of bear sightings in the west end of town. The bear was seen in different locations including Maple Street, Candle Lite Drive and France Street, but was most recently seen near Cold Spring Road.

Officers from the Rocky Hill Police Department and members of Rocky Hill Animal Control were called to the areas and saw the bear themselves. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) was also advised of the sightings. Rocky Hill Animal Control and DEEP say they are continuing to monitor the area.

According to officials, residents should be aware of their surroundings and are reminded that bears are attracted to garbage, pet food, compost piles, fruit trees and birdfeeders around houses.

Home owners should take necessary steps to make sure homes and yards do not have items that would attract bears, police say.

Anyone who sees a bear in Rocky Hill is encouraged to contact Rocky Hill Police at (860) 258-7640 or DEEP at (860) 424-3333.

Analysis: What Could Be Next for Trump Foundation in NY Suit

$

The New York attorney general’s lawsuit against President Donald Trump and the Donald J. Trump Foundation is essentially a civil complaint, and while most would prefer being sued than being prosecuted, a civil action has the potential to do more damage than an indictment for the presidency, NBC News reported.

It remains an open question about whether a president is immune from indictment, arrest or prosecution while in office, but there is less debate about presidential immunity from civil suit. This mean’s the president is most likely less immune to a state attorney general’s petition that is civil in nature than he would be if the same attorney general tried to prosecute him.

If forced to defend himself against the petition, Trump will be forced to come up with answers for very serious allegations about his charitable organization.

Officials are working to determine the cause of a fire at a home in Fairfield that happened on Saturday.

Residents say there was an explosion before the house on Half Mile Road caught fire.

When firefighters arrived, they say they were faced with an extensive fire that had already engulfed the rear of the house. They say smoke and fire could be seen towering over the home from across the street.

While some firefighters stretched hose lines to control the fire, others used hand tools to access concealed burning areas and removed toxic and cancerous smoke from the house with powerful fans.

Everyone inside of the house was able to safely evacuate and call first responders. There were no injuries to occupants or firefighters reported.

Investigators estimate the money save from the fire to be approximately $350,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Crews have fixed a sewer line and stopped sewage discharge after the line broke on Friday.

On Friday afternoon, officials from Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded to assist the city with the break. The 24-inch sewer line collects sewage from South Main Street south of Pameacha Avenue and discharges into Sumner Brook, which flows into the Connecticut River.

The city worked with a contractor to make repairs to the pipe and control the sewage discharge. The City of Middletown Department of Water and Sewer says the sewer line was fixed on Saturday.

Experts say residents should continue to avoid direct contact with water in Sumner Brook and in the Connecticut River in the area for the time being.

If you have a question or concern, you should contact the Middletown Department of Water and Sewer at 860-638-3500 or the Middletown Department of Public Health at 860-638-4690.

The battle for Puerto Rico's future is underway in a crowded courthouse where teachers, parents and students are fighting to keep their schools open, NBC News reported.

Melania Trump Makes Statement on Family Separation

First lady Melania Trump waded into the fierce debate around family separation on the border on Sunday, saying she "hates" to see it done and pushing for bipartisan cooperation to end the practice, NBC News reported.

"Mrs. Trump hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform," her spokeswoman said in a statement. "She believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart."

Trump has repeatedly blamed Democrats for opposition to his immigration reform proposal, falsely crediting an anti-trafficking law that passed unanimously in 2008 under President George W. Bush.

But the Trump administration implemented the "zero tolerance" policy under which it's separated families at the border, and there is no law that requires family separation.

5 Immigrants Die in Car Accident After Border Patrol Chase

Authorities said five undocumented immigrants are dead following a chase involving Border Patrol agents Sunday afternoon.

Dimmit County Sheriff Marion Boyd said the crash happened off Highway 85 in Big Wells at about noon. Boyd said agents were chasing the SUV when it lost control and overturned. The vehicle was traveling at more than 100 miles per hour when it crashed.

Fourteen people were inside, including the driver and passenger. Twelve immigrants were ejected and four died at the scene when the car crashed and rolled over, according to Boyd. A fifth person later died at the hospital. A total of 9 people were transported to the hospital, including five who went to San Antonio Military Medical Center and the rest going to local hospitals. The driver, who is believed to be a United States citizen, was among those transported.

Boyd credited "good police work" for the reason why deputies started pursuing the vehicle.

A border patrol agent observed three vehicles traveling one behind the other on FM 2664 and suspected a smuggling attempt was happening, the agency said in a statement. The agent was able to stop one of the vehicle and called out a description of the other two. A second border patrol agent was able to pull over the second vehicle but the third refused to stop. The agency said multiple arrest were made in both vehicles.

The passenger, also believed to be a U.S. citizen, is currently in custody.

Boyd said there needs to be a wall built because this is a "real problem" in the area.

The incident is under investigation by the US Border Patrol, Texas Department of Public Safety, Dimmit County Sheriff’s Office, Homeland Security Investigations, and Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility, Border Patrol said in a statement.
