Protesters Rally Outside Pence Fundraiser in Philly

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Hotel as Vice President Mike Pence spoke amid national outrage over the separation of migrant children from their parents along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Pence touched down in Philadelphia early Tuesday evening to attend a fundraiser at the Rittenhouse Hotel with Scott Wagner, the Republican nominee for governor in Pennsylvania.

Outside the event, hundreds of protesters descended on Center City during the Stop Separating Families rally to oppose President Donald Trump’s immigration policy. Several laid out children's shoes in solidarity with the families being torn apart at the border.

The crowd chanted "City of brotherly love says no," and "Say it loud, say it clear, immigrants are welcome here" during the protest. One woman also walked through the crowd for at least an hour with a speaker playing the sounds of a baby crying.

Tensions began to rise later during the protest when a federal security detail car tried to move down Walnut Street. Some of the protesters blocked the car and police stepped in, leading to a confrontation, officials said. The crowd chanted, "Our streets" for about 15 minutes until police were able to move them.

Police say one person was arrested during the incident.

An unapologetic Trump doubled down on his policy earlier in the day, declaring that the U.S. "will not be a migrant camp" on his watch.

But images of sobbing children held in fenced cages fueled a growing chorus of condemnation from both political parties and even four former first ladies. The children are being held separately from parents who are being prosecuted under the administration's "zero-tolerance" policy for illegal border crossings.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro joined other attorneys general throughout the country in signing a letter opposing the practice.

"The family separation policy is un-American and violates the core principles and values of our nation,” Shapiro said in a statement after sending a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions. “President Trump has the sole authority to rescind his policy and should stop using children as leverage in political battles.”

Delaware Gov. John Carney also denied a request to send National Troop guards down to the border.

In a series of tweets Tuesday, the Democratic governor said he "can't in good conscience send Delawareans to help" given a Trump administration policy that has torn apart families seeking asylum when attempting to cross the border.

Carney's announcement was followed up by similar sentiments from Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, who signed an executive order in the afternoon banning state resources from being used to separate families of immigrants.

Tuesday night's event benefits the Republican Governors Association, and Pence and Wagner both spoke. The association did not release details on how many people attended the private event or how much they paid to get in.

Wagner is challenging the re-election bid by Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf, who began June with a nearly 10-to-1 cash advantage after Wagner spent heavily to win a three-way Republican primary last month.

The fundraiser was closed to the public and media, but NBC10 covered the demonstration. Follow us for complete coverage.

The High Cost of 'Tent Cities' for Migrant Kids

It costs $775 per person per night to hold migrant children separated from their parents in new "tent cities," an official at the Department of Health and Human Services told NBC News.

The urgency of bringing in security, air conditioning, medical workers and other government contractors is the reason for the high cost, which far surpasses that of routinely staffed structures, according to the official and several former officials.

It costs $256 per person per day to keep children in permanent HHS facilities like Casa Padre in Brownsville, Texas, and $298 per resident per day to keep children with their parents in detention centers like Customs and Immigration Enforcement facility in Dilley, Texas.

HHS is "aggressively looking for potential sites" for more "tent cities" to accommodate the surge of migrant children separated from their parents under the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy on illegal border crossing, the source said.

A family's dog in Bristol is recovering after being attacked by a bear on Monday.

Marie Struckman said her dog Charlie was out in their backyard on Holly Berry Road when the bear attacked.

In a Facebook post, Struckman said "It was the single most scariest thing I have ever witnessed. The bear bit and clawed at him. The amount of blood loss was ridiculous. Thankfully, after spending the entire morning in surgery, Charlie is home resting."

In Struckman's post, she said DEEP should try and relocate the bear, but DEEP said relocations only occur in limited circumstances when the bear is in an inapropriate setting such as near a highway or highly urban area.

According to officials at DEEP, we have an estimated bear population of about 800 that's growing by 10 percent per year with no way to control it. They say we can expect more bear interactions to happen more frequently.

Two teenagers are accused of leading police on a pursuit through multiple towns in a stolen vehicle early Wednesday morning.

Manchester Police say they observed three suspicious vehicles at Food Bag on East Center Street around 2:20 a.m.

When officers checked the registration of one of the vehicles, a silver Subaru Forrester, they learned it had been reported stolen out of Manchester on Tuesday night.

Officers say they tried to pull the vehicle over, but it continued driving and led them on a pursuit that proceeded onto I-84 westbound and into Hartford. The vehicle stopped on Gillette Street in Hartford and both the 17-year-old male driver and the passenger, 19-year-old Kyle Bolduc of Manchester, fled on foot.

Members of Hartford Police and Connecticut State Police helped Manchester Police arrest both the 17-year-old and Bolduc.

According to police, the 17-year-old and Bolduc were also in possession of items that had been stolen during recent car burglaries in Manchester, South Windsor and Vernon.

Both the 17-year-old and Bolduc are facing charges that include larceny, reckless endangerment, criminal trover and possession of a facsimile firearm. The 17-year-old is also facing reckless driving and engaging police in pursuit charges.

Dunkin' Donuts Park, the Hartford home to the Yard Goats, was named the "Best Double-A Ballpark in America," for the second straight year.

The award comes from Ballpark Digest, a website focused on ballparks across the country.  Fans of the ballparks voted in a bracket-style tournament.

Dunkin' Donuts Park now becomes the first minor league baseball stadium to win the award two years in a row.

“Yard Goats fans continue to demonstrate a vibrant passion for Dunkin’ Donuts Park,” General Manager Mike Abramson said. “It’s truly an honor to be named Best Double-A Ballpark for the second year in a row, and to win in back-to-back years as only a Major League franchise has before.”

PNC Park, the home to the major league Pittsburgh Pirates, won the award in back-to-back-seasons in 2015 and 2016, but no minor league team has followed suit until Dunkin' Donuts Park.

The Yard Goats opened Dunkin’ Donuts Park in 2017 and played in front of 41 sellout crowds last season.  This year, the Yard Goats are leading the entire Eastern League in total attendance (216,370) and have played in front of 20 sellout crowds.

The Yard Goats have been sold out each game over the past four weekends (Friday-Sunday) and have played in front of standing room crowds in 18 of the past 25 games in Hartford.

NBC Connecticut is the proud media partner of the Hartford Yard Goats.

When the victim later returned to his locker, he says he found the contents disturbed and $80 had been stolen from his wallet.

According to police, two similar incidents were reported on January 30 and January 31. On January 30, a victim's locker was entered and rifled through but nothing was taken. On January 31, another locker was entered and a watch was stolen.

State police have filed charged against four teens and said charges are pending for another juvenile after vandalism at Wilcox Regional Technical High School in Meriden was discovered just hours before graduation.

Seniors graduating Tuesday night were outraged after finding parts of the school vandalized with eggs and the chairs that were set up for the ceremony were knocked over the morning of the event.

In an email to the school community, Principal Joyce Mowrey wrote “a very small group of students thought they would disrupt our year's final celebration.”

Members of the senior class told NBC Connecticut that students from the junior class were responsible for the vandalism, including egging the graduation stage chairs and knocking the chairs over. In all, the vandalism caused $2,500 worth of damage, according to state police.

According to the principal, the pranksters also shot a paintball gun in the area set up for the ceremony behind the school.

State police have charged a 16-year-old boy, two 17-year-old boys and 18-year-old Anthony Alsonso Fuentes, of Meriden, and said they have been charged with third-degree criminal mischief and third-degree criminal mischief.

Members of the senior class helped put the chairs back in order and the school, which is run by the Connecticut Department of Education, called in a professional cleaning company.

The principal in the email said the students responsible for the vandalism will face consequences from State Police and the Department of Education.

State police said all students involved have been suspended and “are pending expulsion.”

Bristol Superintendent Issues Warning After Man Approached Girls

The superintendent of schools in Bristol has sent a warning to parents after a man approached two young girls Tuesday afternoon.

A message from Superintendent Dr. Sue Moreau sent to families said a man in a dark-colored vehicle approached a seven-year-old girl and a ten-year-old girl at the south entrance of Bristol Public Library around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, offered them candy, then followed them to their home.

Moreau said the public library is one of the summer lunch sites, so children are often there to participate in the summer reading program and to eat lunch.

”I really thought it was important to let all of our families know that this happened right by the public library, to go over safety rules with them and, if possible, to take their children to the library," Moreau said.

Parents who spoke with NBC Connecticut were surprised and concerned to learn of the incident.

”That’s where you think your children would be safe, at the library, but I think they need to have more police just driving around there and looking out for people," said Kathleen Gerhardt, who has a teenage daughter.

No additional information was immediately available.

AMC Now Offering Three Weekly Movies for One Monthly Fee

$

0

About a year after expressing a desire to opt-out of movie subscription service MoviePass, AMC Theatres announced plans Wednesday for a comparable program that will allow customers to see up to three movies per week for one monthly fee.

As part of its new AMC Stubs A-List program launching next week, moviegoers pay $19.95 per month, AMC Chief Marketing Officer Stephen Colanero told NBC. There aren’t any restrictions on movie times, movie format or theater location. The number of movies customers can see — for a maximum of 12 per month — doesn’t carry over from week to week.

There aren’t any blackout dates, Colanero said.

The announcement comes after AMC attempted to distance itself from MoviePass, the service that allows users to see one movie a day in theaters for $9.95 a month. In an August statement, AMC called MoviePass’ business model “shaky and unsustainable,” but the theater chain ultimately backed down.

MoviePass customers are able to purchase movie tickets for Regal, Cinemark and AMC locations.

“Our concern back then [with MoviePass] was about price point and that remains our concern today,” Colanero said. “We feel like we put together the right price value combination and economically viable [model].”

AMC Stubs A-List program members will also receive free upgrades on popcorn and soda, free refills on large popcorn and express service at box offices and concession stands. As part of the service, customers won’t be charged an online ticketing fee and will be able to reserve tickets for future movies in advance.

MoviePass offers two similar plans: one for $7.95 monthly that allows users to see three movies per month and the $9.95 unlimited plan. MoviePass customers will still be permitted to use the service to purchase movie tickets at AMC theaters even after the Stubs A-List program takes effect, a MoviePass spokeswoman confirmed to NBC.

“We are absolutely thrilled that AMC has finally stepped up to embrace a model that we’ve known all along will be the future of our industry,” the spokeswoman said in an email. “It’s important to recognize that they will only be able to service 23% of the nation’s theaters and MoviePass subscribers get a better deal in more than 91% of them, including AMC. Beyond that, our key differentiator is that we pave a path of success for independent and small theater chains, where we will continue to focus our efforts.”

Customers can begin enrolling in AMC’s program Tuesday.

Investigators have arrested two men in connection to a deadly accident that happened in Stratford in April.

According to police, 23-year-old Aaron Perkins of Bridgeport and 29-year-old Ronald Patterson of Bridgeport were racing on Lordship Boulevard near Access Road when Patterson missed a turn in the roadway and lost control of his vehicle while speeding. Patteron's vehicle went off the road, hit a tree and came to rest near a marsh.

A passenger in Patterson's vehicle, Dawaan Edwards, died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

Investigators say Patterson and Perkins gave statements to detectives that a non-contact vehicle was involved in the incident and caused the crash. After looking at video surveillance and evidence at the scene, detectives determined there was no other vehicle in the area at the time of the crash.

Police say Perkins is facing charges including interfering with an officer, misuse of plates, operating an unregistered car and illegal racing. He was released on $2,000 bond.

Patterson is facing charges including illegal racing, negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, reckless driving, operating without a license, interfering with officer, misconduct with a motor vehicle, manslaughter with a motor vehicle and operating under the influence. He was held on a $100,000 bond.
