Women From Catholic Schools in DC Break 'Culture of Silence'

Christine Blasey Ford has broken a "culture of silence" around other experiences of sexual assault that stemmed from alcohol-fueled parties in the 1980s among classmates that attended private schools in the Washington, D.C., area, NBC News reported.

A dozen women who attended Catholic and private prep schools in the Montgomery County area of Maryland decades ago when Brett Kavanaugh was a student at Georgetown Preparatory School spoke to NBC News this week, seven of them on the record. The women — most of whom signed an open letter saying they believed Ford’s allegation, and all but two of whom did not know her or Kavanaugh personally — shared their memories of kegs, bonfires and unsupervised beach houses where heavy drinking fueled sexually inappropriate comments and behavior and attacks that were never spoken of afterward.

“So many of us thought we were alone,” one graduate of the all-girls School of the Sacred Heart said. “But we weren’t. When we heard Christine’s story, we knew that story. We’d experienced it.”

A former church youth group leader has been arrested following accusations he sexually abused five girls who attended his youth group meetings in Maryland.

A Cecil County grand jury indicted Allen L. Price, 58, Thursday, and he was arrested the next morning at his Quarryville, Pennsylvania, home, Maryland State Police say. Price has been charged with five counts of felony second-degree child abuse, 41 counts of felony second-degree sex offense, three counts of felony third-degree sex offense, 49 counts of fourth-degree sex offense, a misdemeanor, and 11 counts of second-degree assault, also a misdemeanor.

The investigation into Price began last summer when police received information about him.

Police say Price volunteered as a youth group leader at Grace Bible Chapel in Rising Sun, Maryland, from 1987 until 2001. Police say Price assaulted and abused five girls who attended the youth group meetings. The victims were between 11 and 16 years old at the time of the assaults.

Police say their investigation indicates that Price still has ties to Quarryville and Lewes, Delaware, where he has been involved in youth activities.

Anyone who would like to speak to police about Price should call 410-996-7811.

A man suspected in a Bridgeport slaying last year has been taken into custody in Florida.

The U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force in Florida took 18-year-old Jahmari “Wack” Cooper into custody around 8:30 p.m. Thursday as he got out of a car in Riviera Beach.

Cooper is suspected of shooting and killing Jeri Kollack at the Greene Homes housing complex in Bridgeport on Oct. 11, 2017 and is charged with felony murder, murder, and first-degree robbery.

Based on information from the public on Wednesday, authorities were led to believe Cooper might have fled to the West Palm Beach area in Florida and the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force tracked him to an apartment complex in Riviera Beach.

Authorities searched the apartment Cooper was suspected of staying in and found a handgun, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and a New Jersey driver’s license under the alias “Mark White,” according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Facebook Says 50 Million Accounts Potentially Compromised

Facebook said on Friday it has discovered a security issue affecting 50 million accounts, which could have let hackers take over the accounts and access users' personal information.

"Since we’ve only just started our investigation, we have yet to determine whether these accounts were misused or any information accessed. We also don’t know who’s behind these attacks or where they’re based," Facebook vice president of product management Guy Rosen said in a blog post.

Rosen said the company discovered the issue on Tuesday and notified law enforcement. The attackers exploited a hole in Facebook's code related to the "View As" function, which lets people see what their profiles look like to other users.

A total of 90 million users will have their access tokens reset, the company said, which means they will have to log back in the next time they try to use Facebook.

Shares in Facebook fell sharply on the news before rebounding somewhat, though they were still down 3 percent in midday trading.

This is a developing story.

After GOP's Offense, Dems Bring Fury to Committee Meeting

$

Democrats came full-throated to Friday's Senate Judiciary Committee meeting on Judge Brett Kavanaugh and furiously pleaded their cases for why the nominee should not be confirmed to the Supreme Court without more investigation into sexual misconduct allegations, with some even walking out of the meeting in protest.

The meeting followed a long and emotional day of testimony from Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, who accused the judge of sexually assaulting her when they were teens. On Thursday, the events turned partisan as the day dragged on, with Kavanaugh and Senate Republicans claiming in fiery statements that Democrats used Ford and her experience as political pawns.

Kavanaugh called his confirmation process a "national disgrace" and Sen. Lindsey Graham deemed it "the most unethical sham."

After remaining relatively measured through their questioning of Ford and Kavanaugh, Democrats displayed their outrage right off the bat on Friday.

As soon as the committee opened, Democrats offered a motion to subpoena Mark Judge, the high school friend of Kavanaugh who Ford said was the sole witness to the alleged assault. Judge has said he does not recall the incident, and the motion offered by Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut was quickly blocked by Republicans in a vote. Blumenthal and three other Democrats, Kamala Harris of California, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, and Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, then stood from their seats on the dais and walked out of the hearing room.

"It’s bad enough that we sent one person to the Supreme Court with this kind of cloud. We should not be sending both," Hirono told reporters outside the hearing room, referencing the confirmation of Justice Clearance Thomas after Anita Hill accused him of sexual harassment.

Harris said Republicans were "ramming" Kavanaugh's confirmation through, telling reporters, "There should not be a tyranny of the majority."

"This has been about raw power," Harris added. "You're seeing that in display in this hearing this morning. You’ve been seeing it from the process in the beginning."

Sen. Corey Booker, of New Jersey, followed suit, leaving the meeting after delivering an impassioned speech to committee chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley. Booker said that “this is a moral moment in our nation.”

“We do not have to have this vote today,” he told Grassley, adding, “I cannot stomach that are going to move forward.”

Harris and Booker both refused to vote on Grassley's preferred 1:30 p.m. time for Friday's vote on advancing Kavanaugh out of the committee.

"They're refusing to vote because this is so unfair," Hirono yelled before she and the three others walked out in protest.

Some Democrats who remained in the room repeated calls for another FBI background investigation into Ford’s claims, including Sen. Amy Klobuchar, of Minnesota. She argued that a federal probe could obtain necessary information and statements from the people alleged to be involved in or related to the incident. She claimed it’s “not the same thing” to rely on a letter from Judge’s lawyers denying the events described by Ford, which Republicans have used to chip away at Ford’s credibility.

Whitehouse returned to the room to rebuke his committee colleagues for not supporting another investigation. He drew renewed attention to Kavanaugh’s calendars that the judge had submitted to help support his claim that the gathering Ford described didn’t happen. Whitehouse argued that an entry written by Kavanaugh on July 1, 1982, indicated there had been a gathering of the same people Ford had alleged were present at the party and that they were getting together for beers.

“This may, may be powerful corroborating evidence that the assault happened, that it happened that day, and that it happened in that place, but with no FBI investigation, we can’t tell,” Whitehouse said.

Rachel Mitchell, the special prosecutor hired by the Republicans to question Ford and Kavanaugh, questioned the judge briefly on the July 1 calendar date. After this line of questioning from Mitchell, the rest of the Republican senators claimed their time with Kavanaugh and Mitchell did not question Kavanaugh further.

Though expressing sympathy for Ford and belief that something happened to her, Republicans held their ground in their support for Kavanaugh. Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana called the confirmation process "an intergalactic freak show" and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas said it is an example of "Washington D.C. at it's very ugliest."

"Judge Kavanaugh, he too has been dragged through the mud for the last two weeks in a way that has no precedent,"  Cruz added.

Graham, whose visible anger and shouted attacks on Thursday seemed to surprise his fellow senators, called the allegations against Kavanaugh "a bunch of garbage."

"We are in the Twilight Zone," he said, echoing a phrase used by Kavanaugh in denying one of the accusations against him.

However, Democrats did manage to get one key committee Republican on their side by the end of the meeting. In a dramatic turn after speaking with friend Sen. Chris Coons and several other Democrats, Republican Sen. Jeff Flake suggested that the full Senate vote be delayed while the FBI investigates Ford's claims. Only Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer can approve a delayed vote; the committee then decided 11-10 to proceed to a full Senate vote.

Coons had said that women have reached out to him to share their own stories of sexual assault and that "speaks to what a public service is being done here." After Flake called for a federal probe, Coons praised his close friend and said they share a deep concern about the health of the nation and closing the growing divide in the country together.

Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont defended his party’s approach and handling of Kavanaugh’s confirmation proceedings, saying Democrats aren’t trying to delay the nomination ahead of the midterms but that they are “doing our job.”

Owner of Dirt Bike That Was Stolen in West Hartford Has Message for Thief

A young man who lives in West Hartford is sending a message to the thieves who stole his dirt bike. He says it meant much more to him than they know.

Travis Marks’ bike was stolen out of his garage on Fairview Street earlier this month. He was in Boston, getting difficult news about his dad, Joel.

“We realize that the tumor had gotten worse and it had developed into stage four brain cancer,” Marks said. “It was kind of sudden and a shock to my family. We weren’t really expecting it, so it’s been hard.”

Marks decided right away to sell his dirt bike.

“I thought we could put this bike to better use,” he said. “I could take them on a trip, take my brothers. Those memories are worth more than the physical bike.”

The very next day, he realized his bike was gone.

“Someone broke into my garage,” Marks said. “They cut the lock off of it and they took it from me. The day before, I knew I was going to sell it for my dad. I have been living there for year and had no issues of break-ins or anything. I was just shocked at how the timing lined up. I guess when it rains it pours,” he said.

Marks said he keeps checking online for his bike, but doesn’t expect to get it back. He has a message for the people who stole it.

“I’m just disappointed," Marks said. “It’s not that they stole a piece of machinery from me. Took away and opportunity for me that is an intangible kind of thing. I can’t even put a price on it. It’s just the experience I’m going to be missing.”

While his father’s prognosis right now doesn’t look good, Marks says this won’t stop him from making the most of their time together. He is a young, working professional and said he plans to save up for a ski trip out west any way he can.

“It’s put into perspective what’s important to me,” said Marks. “At the end of the day, I lost a dirt bike, but I can still visit my dad and I realize how important that is now.”

West Hartford police are investigating.

Hamden’s Top Cop Takes Job With State Department of Labor

$

After 12 years as Hamden’s Chief of Police and more than 25 years serving the town, Chief Thomas Wydra is retiring and starting a new chapter.

“The department is in great condition,” Chief Wydra told NBC Connecticut. “In my opinion, that has less to do with me and really a lot to do with the people that are left here.”

Wydra and his twin brother Tim, who is now a lieutenant, joined the department on the same day.

“We did a couple of interviews with local newspapers,” Wydra recalled. “One of the reporters asked us which one of you might be chief someday and we both laughed that off at 22 years old.”

But Wydra rose through the ranks.

“My favorite assignment in this department was when I worked as an undercover police officer in the mid to late 1990s,” he said.

Then in 2006, former Hamden Mayor Craig Henrici named Wydra the town’s top cop.

“Anything is possible,” Wydra said, “but you have to put the effort in.”

During Wydra’s tenure as chief, Hamden Police became one of the first departments in the state to outfit officers with body cameras.

“That’s a program I’m especially proud of,” he said. “It insulates us from complaints that are illegitimate, but it also strengthens our relationship, we are more transparent.”

As he gets ready to turn in his badge, Wydra said he is also proud of efforts to build a stronger bond between police and the people they serve.

“We are not just law enforcement,” he said. “We are the police and police can install car seats, the police can have Citizens Academy to teach people what we do and how we do it, connecting with kids. If we want to have long lasting trust and good relation with the public, there is no better place to start than with children.”

The department today, Wydra said, better reflects Hamden’s diverse population.

“Folks want to see police officers who look like them,” he added.

Through his nearly 26 year career in law enforcement, Wydra said he has developed “a special place for people who are victims, people who are taken advantage of.”

Wydra said he will continue helping the vulnerable in his new job, director of the Wage and Workplace Standards Division at the Connecticut Department of Labor.

“It’s a division that goes out and quite frankly protects people,” he explained. “Protects people who otherwise might be taken advantage of by employers.”

Hamden Mayor Curt Leng will appoint Chief Wydra’s replacement. For now, Deputy Chief John Capiello will be the town’s acting Chief of Police.

Wydra begins his new job with the state next Friday.

New Charges Against Couple Accused of Trashing Homes

A West Hartford couple accused of trashing at least two homes in West Hartford while participating in a state program that paid their rent is facing additional criminal charges.

NBC Connecticut Investigates first reported the allegations against Chad and Jessica Anderson in May when several landlords complained that the couple had damaged their rental properties.

The pair receives rental assistance through the federally-funded Shelter Plus Care program, which is administered by the through the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS).

Chad and Jessica Anderson were arrested Friday by West Hartford Police. They are each charged with one count of Criminal Damage to a Landlord's Property in the 1st Degree and Larceny in the 2nd Degree.

Their former landlord, Dritan Dalipi, told NBC Connecticut Investigates a DMHAS employee contacted him to inquire about renting his home to the Andersons.

Dalipi said the pair blatantly disregarded the no pets clause in their lease, damaged his house, and stole furniture when he asked them to leave.

The Andersons and their six children moved into Dalipi’s home after they were kicked out of their previous rental property in Bishop’s Corner.

In June, Chad and Jessica Anderson were charged with one count each of Criminal Damage to a Landlord's Property in the 1st Degree after the homeowner, Laura Guilmartin, accused them of causing $20,000 in damages.

Guilmartin said DMHAS gave her $4,000 to cover damages, the maximum allowed under the terms of the state’s Shelter Plus Care program.

The Andersons deny the charges and say they did nothing wrong. They invited NBC Connecticut inside their current rental home, which was spotless when we visited.

NBC Connecticut Investigates was unable to reach Chad Anderson’s attorney.

We spoke by phone with the attorney representing Jessica Anderson. Paul E. Mawn, Jr. He says he doesn’t believe his client has done anything in bad faith and called the allegations, “at best a misunderstanding.”

Mawn added that it is unusual for criminal charges to be filed in a landlord/tenant dispute.

In response to the landlords’ allegations, a DMHAS spokesperson told Investigates the department does not conduct background checks or vouch for its clients. The spokesperson also said the leases are between the landlord and tenant, and any disputes should be handled in court.

Chad and Jessica Anderson are scheduled to appear in court later this month.
