Two people have died and multiple others including three firefighters are injured after a fire at a multi-family home in New Haven early Sunday morning.

Firefighters responded to a home on West Street around 3:30 a.m. According to fire officials, 16 people were inside of the three-story building when the fire broke out.

When crews arrived, firefighters said there was heavy fire coming out of the second floor and everyone was rescued within six minutes.

Crews rescued two people in a narrow back staircase. Firefighters said the two people were brought out of the home and CPR was performed on them, however, they later died at the hospital. Their identities have not been released.

One person who jumped off of the back of the building became unconscious, but is now in the hospital in stable condition and is talking, fire officials said. Two others jumped from the front of the home, but were not injured.

Three firefighters were taken to the hospital for evaluation. Fire officials said one is having his or her shoulder looked at, another is having his or her back examined and another was taken to the hospital for elevated blood pressure and minor smoke inhalation.

State Police and the fire marshal are interviewing people and are investigating to determine what caused the fire.

A Norwalk police officer was taken to the hospital after getting hit by a driver who police said was impaired and attempting to flee on Sunday.

An officer was stopped for a red light in the right lane on Main Street around 12:30 a.m. when he said he saw a driver pull around his vehicle into the left turn only lane and drive through the red light while making a right turn.

The officer pulled the driver over on Wall Street and identified him as 41-year-old Terrance Parker, of Norwalk.

According to police, the vehicle's registration was suspended and Parker's license was suspended.

Police said Parker also smelled of alcohol and became belligerent when the officer told him his vehicle was being towed.

When the officer told Parker to hand over his car keys, police said he started the car, placed it in drive and accelerated.

Officers said Parker hit the officer, who was on the driver's side, and knocked him backwards. The officer was transported by ambulance to Norwalk Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Parker fled the scene and was initially able to elude capture. His vehicle information was broadcast to area police departments and a short time later, authorities said a Westport police officer spotted the vehicle traveling eastbound on I-95.

Police said Parker refused to stop for the Westport officers and engaged them in pursuit. He was eventually apprehended on Boston Avenue in Bridgeport with the assistance of Westport Police, Connecticut State Police and Bridgeport Police.

Parker is facing charges including assault on a police officer, interfering with a police officer, operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol, operating under suspension, failure to obey traffic control and failure to carry insurance. His bond has been set at $100,000 and he is due in court on May 12.

People Pledge 'Never Again' to the Holocaust

Never again.

That’s the pledge as people remember those murdered in the Holocaust.

With hopes that good will triumph over evil, people came together for a Holocaust commemoration event put on by the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven on Sunday.

“To honor those that came before us and not forget the terrible tragedies so we don’t repeat those same mistakes,” Judy Alperin, Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven, said.

Among those who attended was a Holocaust survivor, Isador Juda.

“We should keep this up to tell the world what happened and six million people were murdered,” Juda said.

Juda told us he lived in Austria when Hitler came in. He had been put on a train destined for a death camp.

“For some reason the train slowed down, which I don’t know why ‘till this day. And I jumped off. I had nothing to lose and I went over the Alps into Switzerland,” Juda said.

While Juda escaped, many did not.

“We’re here to remember all the innocent who perished not on the battlefield but were simply targeted for death because of who they were,” Rabbi Alvin Wainhaus, Congregation Or Shalom, said.

Wainhaus says the Jewish community is now reeling.

It comes after the deadly attacks on synagogues in Pittsburgh and California.

“I just hope and pray that we can wipe out anti-Semitism because people have a right to live where ever they are and whatever they do,” Juda said.

The Jewish Federation said all places of worship should be free from violence.

In an acknowledgement of the times we live in, the Federation has coordinated Active Shooter Training and offers security resources to its members.

Hamden Works to Improve Transparency Following Police-Involved Shooting in New Haven

0
0

For weeks, people in Hamden have called for accountability and transparency after one of their officers opened fire in New Haven. Now, officials are answering the call.

The Legislative Council in Hamden has already proposed a resolution that would fund an independent investigation. On Monday night, they plan to vote on that resolution.

The is something community members have been pushing for for several weeks following the shooting of two unarmed people in New Haven.

A Yale police officer and a Hamden police officer opened fire on a car after suspecting it was involved in an attempted armed robbery on April 16.

The Hamden officer ran over and shot into the passenger window.

The passenger was shot and taken to the hospital. The driver was not shot.

"Anyone could have been killed. Thank god Stephanie Washington survived, Paul Witherspoon survived. They're traumatized. Not only are they traumatized, that community is traumatized," said Community Organizer Kerry Ellington.

The police officers' actions have sparked outrage in the community.

State Police have been investigating, but community members have still been fighting for an independent investigation.

"This person will observe the investigation while it's happening, look at the outcome, and then do a review afterward to make sure everything is completely open and fair," said Hamden Council President Mick McGarry.

McGarry added that restoring the public trust is a priority. He said he expects about $50,000 in funding for the independent investigation.

Hamden also has set up a transparency committee as they search for a new police chief. They plan to have public meetings asking people what they want to see in a new chief.

Middletown Mom Accused of Leaving Young Children Alone With Only Pumpkin Pie Filling to Eat

A Middletown mother is accused of leaving her 2- and 6-year-old children home alone with only a can of pumpkin pie filling for food and has been arrested.

Police officers responded to the family’s Woodbury Circle residence after a woman called authorities just before 4:30 p.m. on April 27.

The caller told police that she had gone to the home to retrieve some clothing and the 6-year-old opened the window, said she and her 2-year-old sister were home alone and could not open the door, according to the arraignment report.

The 6-year-old opened the door for the police officer who responded and said her mother, 25-year-old Victoria Reyes, had left with their 4-year-old sister to get food for them, according to the arraignment report.

The two children were sharing a can of pumpkin pie filling that police said had been partially opened with a large kitchen knife. The 6-year-old told police it was the only food in the house and they were hungry, according to police.

Reyes came back to the home around 15 minutes after the officer arrived and told the officer that she’d been at a friend’s home in the complex, trying to find food, but police noted not seeing anyone walking in the complex.

The kitchen and bathroom in the apartment were dirty, police noted. The bathroom smelled of feces and there were dirty diapers and used tampons on the floor, according to the arraignment reports.

At 5:40 p.m., someone else arrived at the home with food from McDonald’s and told police that Reyes had been texting him and she was not completely truthful about what had transpired, according to police.

Reyes was arrested, charged with two counts of risk of injury and released on a $5,000 surety bond. She is due in court on May 8.

Authorities called the state Department of Children and Families and said the children were left in the home because DCF has an open case, put a safety plan in place and ordered that the residence be cleaned up.

Stepfather of Missing Tx. Girl, 4, Says She Was Abducted By Three Men

An Amber Alert was issued Sunday in Houston for a 4-year-old girl whose stepfather told police she was kidnapped by three men, police say.

Maleah Davis' stepfather, Darion Vence, told investigators he was driving to George Bush Intercontinental Airport Friday night with the young girl and his 2-year-old son to pick up the children's mother, who was flying from Massachusetts, police said.

According to police, Vence told detectives he thought he heard a popping sound and pulled over onto the side of a highway near the airport. That's when two "Hispanic" men jumped out of a blue Chevrolet pickup truck while a third waited inside and said the girl looked "very nice and very sweet," Vence told police, according to Houston Homicide Sgt. Mark Hollbrook.

Vence told investigators one of the men hit him on the head, knocking him unconscious. He said he later woke up briefly while in the back of the truck with the children and three kidnappers, according to Vence's account to police.

Vence told detectives that he was in and out of consciousness until about 6 p.m. Saturday night when he and his son were dropped off in Sugar Land, a city about 20 miles southwest of Houston. Maleah and the blue Chevrolet were missing, police said.

Vence told police he walked to a hospital in Sugar Land where he was treated for minor injuries. The 2-year-old boy was not harmed.

The Nissan Altima Vence was driving, which belongs to Maleah's mother, Brittany, is also reported missing, police said. The car was recently purchased and still has the temporary tags with the license plate 3092G9, KHOU reported.

Holbrook said the silver Altima was last seen driving through an intersection in Sugar land just before 3 p.m. CT Saturday, but authorities don't know who was driving the car.

Maleah Davis is approximately 3 feet tall and weighs 30 to 40 pounds, police said. She was last seen wearing a light blue Under Armour jacket, blue jeans and gray Under Armour tennis shoes with pink and white colors on them.

Police said the men who reportedly abducted her drove a blue, crew cab, Chevrolet pickup truck — possibly a 2010 model.

Authorities asked anyone with information about her or her location to call Houston police at 713-308-3600.

Editor's note: Police originally stated Maleah Davis was 5 years old. Police later confirmed Sunday night that Davis is 4 years old. This story has since been updated.

Damage Found on West Haven Soccer Field

Soccer players in West Haven had to wait to play on the field at Alma E. Pagels Elementary School because of rain and now they might have to wait again because of damage done to the field.

West Haven Youth Soccer League volunteers discovered the damage to the fence and tire marks on the field and believe the damage was done between late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

“I’ve coached for about 29 years in the league, watched a lot of kids play and this was just greatly disappointing today.” Ruth Costa, of the Girls Commission West Haven Youth Soccer League, said. “There’s supposed to be almost 100 kids practicing on this field this afternoon after 4 o’clock so this has hurt a lot of kids and that’s the most devastating part.”

The parks department maintains the field and crews went to check on the damage Monday morning and dropped off some loam.

Joseph Montagna, the parks maintenance supervisor, said they’ve dealt with damage like this before at other parks in the city.

“Senseless. Stupidity. There’s no need for this. I don’t know what enjoyment that they get out of it. All it does is ruin the field for the kids and make more work for us,” he said.

Costa said she thinks there might be enough space for the players to practice on the field today, but they can’t play a game until it gets fixed or they’d risk the players spraining their ankles.

Police are reviewing nearby surveillance video and they are trying to identify the driver who is responsible.
