Road Projects in Stamford, Waterford to Cause Big Delays This Weekend

$

Motorists beware.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation has two major bridge projects planned this weekend. One project is on Interstate 95 in Stamford and the other is in Waterford.

“I-395 will be closed at that location starting tonight and it will last for a duration of ten days,” said Kevin Nursick, spokesman for the Connecticut DOT.

This bridge rehab process will be broken into two, 10-day closures. The first begins Friday at 6 p.m. All lanes of I-395 at exit 2 where the highway crosses over Route 85 will be shutdown. The second phase will be in mid-July.

While the I-395 bridge is closed, traffic will be diverted using the off and on ramps at the closure. Route 85 will remain open. Still, those who travel these roads daily, are concerned.

“I drive by it every day. I take 85 to actually get here so I’m kind of curious how it’s gonna affect me,” said Justin Forester who lives in West Hartford but works in the area.

Meanwhile, major delays are expected on Interstate 95 in Stamford, as construction crews begin work replacing the Route 1 bridge. North and southbound lanes of I-95 will be closed at exit 9, with traffic being diverted using the on and off ramps.

The work is expected to be completed over the next two weekends with lanes re-opening during weekdays.

For both Waterford and Stamford projects, the DOT is using what they call “ABC” or Accelerated Bridge Construction. Pre-fabricated bridge structures will be used, effectively shortening the construction time.

“I kind of think of it as kind of ripping the Band-Aid off quickly as opposed to doing it slowly,” explained Nursick. “It stings, but we get it done really, really fast. The public really seems to support that.”

With traffic congestion, business owners may see lighter volume.

“Clearly it’s gonna have an impact, but I think most businesses and residents recognize that we have to prepare our infrastructure,” said Tony Sheridan, President & CEO Eastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce.

While the Eastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce is located in Waterford, Sheridan worries more about the construction in Stamford. Perhaps because of the nearby casinos which draw from throughout the region.

“Interstate 95 is already maxed out and just having to divert that traffic is going to be a serious problem,” said Sheridan. “What’ll happen here is we’re very involved in tourism and so it will have an impact. Anyone from NYC this weekend coming to CT will most likely cancel their plans.”

While rebuilding and rehabilitating infrastructure around the state, the DOT has one recommendation for motorists this weekend.

“It’s better if folks avoid the areas if they can,” said Nursick, “that way the people that need to be traveling here can get through there with the least amount of congestion possible.”

Witnesses were visibly shaken Friday evening after a gunman opened fire on the Virginia Beach Municipal Building, killing 11 people and injuring at least six others.

Thirty-year-old Megan Banton called 911 after she heard gunshots and her supervisor gathered her and others into a barricaded office, according to the Virginia-Pilot. "It felt like forever," Banton told the local newspaper.

Sheila Cook, who works in a nearby building, said she was inside her office when she heard muffled shooting. In an interview with local NBC affiliate WAVY-TV, she said, "I'm still shaken because it's just entirely too much killing going on."

But she also expressed gratitude for the police's swift action. "I just thank God that they were able to alert us in time because if it had been 10 minutes more we all would have been outside," she said. "So that’s what I’m grateful for today."

City Councilwoman Barbara Henley drove up to the City Hall building and heard sirens wailing at the scene. At first, she thought it was an accident. Then, she saw city employees standing outside on their phones and heard a man shout "get down."

"I was scared to death," Henley told The Virginia-Pilot.

It’s been a long time coming, Motorcycle Madness finally underway in Newington.

Mother Nature decided to eventually cooperate Friday night at Mill Pond Park.

The event had to be rescheduled many times this month because of bad or potentially bad weather.

Friday night was the fourth set date of the event.

Families enjoyed live music, food, vendors, lawn games for the family, and even a fireworks show.

Folks who helped think up the idea, hope it brings the community closer together.

“We needed something here for the community, for the biker community, but also to show people bikers aren’t all bad people. There’s a reason why they’re called one-percenters and they’re one percent of the biker crowd,” said motorcyclist Bob Serra. “So this event brings people together. Let’s them see we’re fathers, we’re grandparents, we’re aunts, brothers, and moms, you know we’re part of the community.”

This is the 4th year Newington has hosted “Motorcycle Madness.”

Money raised from the admission fee helps fund Newington’s July festival and fireworks show.

Mass. Mother Found Dead in Car Feared for Her Safety, Police Say

Authorities are investigating the death of a Lexington, Massachusetts mother whose body was found in her car early Thursday after she went missing earlier in the week.

"We are today confirming that we are in the early stages of an active homicide investigation," Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said.

Ryan said the body of 49-year-old Shen Cai, of Lexington, was located around 12:30 a.m. Thursday in the driver's seat of her white Honda CRV parked on the side of Worthen Road, close to Lexington High School and its athletic fields and not far from where she lived.

Police were called to the area after receiving a 911 call from several of Cai's friends who had been searching for her and located her unresponsive inside her vehicle.

Cai was pronounced dead at the scene, and Ryan said investigators initially observed some suspicious trauma. An autopsy was conducted, and the medical examiner determined that she died after sustaining "multiple blunt trauma."

She had last been seen by her husband and friends on Tuesday evening. The following day, her friends became concerned after she missed two scheduled appointments.

The friends also told police Cai had previously mentioned to them that she had concerns about her safety.

NBC 10 Boston spoke with Cai’s husband as he returned home from the hospital, but gave no reason why he was there.

"She’s a great lady," said the victim’s husband. "I’m not going to comment anything at all, she’s a great lady and she’s my wife."

"I can’t tell anything," he said. "I don't want to do any more damage to anybody ok."

Ryan said Cai had a daughter, and her husband also has a son.

Based on preliminary information, officials said Cai's death does not appear to be a random act.

"We are confident at this time that the community is not at risk in any manner as a result of this incident," Lexington Police Chief Mark Corr said.

Residents were shocked to hear of the incident on Friday.

"You don’t think it’ll happen in your neighborhood," said next-door neighbor Vidhi Thumma. "And to your neighbor."

"There were lots of periods where the house was dark and nobody was around," said next-door neighbor Ken Kaiten. "We really never knew where they were."

Ryan said there is no person of interest at this point. She said the investigation remains open and active.

A climber suffered serious injuries after falling off of a cliff in Southington on Friday night.

First responders were called to Ragged Mountain around 8:15 p.m. after getting a call about a male climber who fell off of a cliff.

Fire officials said the climber fell between 20 and 30 feet from the cliff onto rocky ledge. The fall is believed to be the result of gear malfunctioning.

The climber's crew was able to lower him to the ground from the ledge where he landed.

Firefighters carried the man a little over a mile before crews from Berlin and Meriden drove him in their all-terrain vehicles to the LifeStar landing zone at the dam of the Wassel Reservoir, officials said.

He was flown by LifeStar to Hartford Hospital to be treated for serious, but non-life threatening injuries, authorities added.

The U.S. Navy has acknowledged that a request was made to hide the USS John S. McCain during President Donald Trump's recent state visit to Japan, NBC News reports.

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said Friday he’d asked his chief of staff to “look into” the reported request from the White House to move the ship "out of sight" during Trump's visit. The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that it had reviewed an email to Navy and Air Force officials dated May 15 that included the direction "USS John McCain needs to be out of sight" for Trump's Japan visit. CNBC has also obtained the email. NBC News has not reviewed the email.

Trump said Wednesday night on Twitter: "I was not informed about anything having to do with the Navy Ship USS John S. McCain during my recent visit to Japan." Trump again denied any involvement on Thursday, but said whoever made the request was "well meaning."

Frustration Over Disaster Aid Grows as House Delays Funding — Again

$

Americans along the Arkansas River are facing a slow-motion disaster as flooding inundates and displaces communities, causing millions in damage and mirroring havoc experienced in the Midwest, NBC News reports.

Fourteen people have died because of the historic floods that stretch from Arkansas and Oklahoma to Iowa and the Dakotas. The Missouri and Mississippi Rivers have burst through levees, destroyed communities and cost states billions of dollars. Meanwhile, the National Weather Service predicts the Arkansas River's crest will set records in six cities across Arkansas over the next week.

As recent disasters add to a string of calamitous weather events, many across the country have looked to the federal government for crucial disaster aid — only to grow increasingly frustrated as partisan politics of Washington stalled a relief bill three times in less than a week. The delays came as three Republican lawmakers blocked votes to pass the bipartisan $19.1 billion disaster aid bill, most recently on Thursday. That last objection was voiced by Rep. John Rose of Kentucky, who said the spending was “another act of irresponsible big government.”

Meanwhile, Saturday is the first day of hurricane season, a difficult reminder that the line of those who need disaster relief funding grows longer by the day. From a hurricane that hit Panama City, Florida, to the wildfire that tore through Paradise, California, Americans living in towns hit by natural disasters all have one thing in common right now: There's no money coming from Congress to help with rebuilding.

New Haven Hosts 4th Annual Dragon Boat Regatta

It was a big day on the New Haven waterfront on Saturday. The Elm City hosted its 4th annual Dragon Boat Regatta.

For many of the rowers on the Long Island Sound on Saturday morning, it was their first time in this kind of boat.

"It was a lot of fun. We had a good cadence and consistent power," said Jeff Ott, of "The Wheel Good Paddlers."

For the first time this year, the Regatta was at the brand new Canal Dock Boathouse.

"Have a great time and welcome to New Haven," New Haven Mayor Toni Harp said. "It's gorgeous and it's a wonderful place to enjoy New Haven."

There are 40 foot canoe-type boats with 20 towers, two in each of the rows. At the very end is the spot where the drummer sits to keep the rower's pace.

"My job is actually to just sync to them so as long as we're in sync then one by one as the boat goes back, you just stay together. That's all that matters," said Laura Campbell, of "Tuff Girls."

Campbell is part of "Tuff Girls" team from Hamden's Tuff Girl Fitness. They're the only all female team on the water.

"Women are powerful and strong and capable and don't doubt us. Sometimes you have to prove it," Christa Doran, the team captain of the "Tuff Girls" said.

Doran said regardless of their outcome, her team represents something much bigger and better than a trophy.

"It's just so amazing to have a group of people who have never done something like this before, who were scared to do this so they had to use their bravery to come out here and just do something that's unknown. That's really special," Doran added.

This year, for the first time, the "Wheel Good Paddlers" of the New Haven Bicycle club beat the three-time champions "Nightmare on Elm Street."

A Texas teacher is currently on administrative leave after reporting undocumented students in her school district through a series of tweets addressed at President Donald Trump, NBC News reported.

Georgia Clark, who is still listed as an English teacher on the Carter-Riverside High School website, tweeted that the school she worked on had been "taken over" by "illegal students from Mexico," adding that Trump was elected "on the promise that a wall would be built to protect our borders."

Clark’s tweet, which were published on Tuesday, have been deleted from the social platform.

"Our school year ends today. The Board of Education will discuss, and possibly take action on, her case on Tuesday, June 4," Clint Bond, executive director of external and emergency communications at the Fort Worth Independent School District, told NBC News in a statement.

The Hispanic student population in Fort Worth Independent School District is nearly 63 percent. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that about 88 percent of the students at the school Clark had been teaching are Hispanic.

Metal Spike Hits Vehicle, Lands Within Inches of Children's Faces in Fairfield: PD

Two young children restrained in car seats were spared from life-threatening injuries after a metal spike was propelled into their vehicle and landed within inches of their faces in Fairfield on Saturday.

Officers said while traveling on Lockwood Road, a 10-inch metal spike was picked up and propelled by the rotating cutting blades of a landscaper's commercial lawn mower.

The spike traveled 20 feet and broke through the rear passenger side window of a vehicle. It came within inches of the front of the 2-year-old and 3-year-old children's faces, according to authorities.

The 10-inch spike then ricocheted off the interior glass on the opposite side and landed between the two children on the floor, police added.

Both children were evaluated by first responders and were found to only have minor injuries due to the shattered glass, officers said.

"In just a matter of inches, an injury may have occurred resulting in a very tragic story," said Fairfield Fire Department Lt. Robert Smith.
