The search for a missing New Canaan, Connecticut mother continues more than a week after she disappeared and police said they are securing search warrants related to her disappearance.

New Canaan Police said officers from their department and troopers from Connecticut State are continuing the search for Jennifer Dulos and for evidence related to her disappearance. The search has expanded beyond New Canaan into other towns and cities across the state.

Police said the criminal investigation into the case is continuing and does involve securing search warrants. Authorities did not release details about the locations of the search warrants or what items may be listed.

According to officers, no arrest has been made.

Dulos, a 50-year-old mother of five, disappeared on Friday, May 24, after dropping her kids off at school and after missing several appointments that day.

She was reported missing around 7:30 p.m. on Friday and she had been driving a black 2017 Chevrolet Suburban, which was later found on Lapham Road, near Waveny Park.

On Thursday, investigators searched at the New Canaan park and also checked a home in nearby Pound Ridge, New York. On Friday, detectives from Connecticut State Police assisted officers from New Canaan with multiple searches in the Hartford area.

Multiple state police cruisers were parked on Milford Street in Hartford on Friday night and investigators were seen going in and out of a home.

Neighbors said police were looking at their security camera and said that investigators were looking to see if a specific vehicle had passed through the area.

Investigators also searched nearby dumpsters in the area.

There was also a police presence in other areas of the city including near Albany Avenue and on Homestead Avenue and Sigourney Street.

Detectives have not released details about what they are looking for or if they have found anything.

Police have called this an active and ongoing investigation and all they’re saying publicly is this a missing person’s case – though as is typical in these situations -- they’re also looking to see if there’s a possible crime involved.

Dulos previously lived in Farmington and moved to a home in New Canaan after filing for divorce from her husband Fotis nearly two years ago.

The children are safe with family in New York City.

Quite a Home

There is a very unique house in Hartford that is not all that it seems - unless you take a closer look. NBC Connecticut took a tour of the Austin House on Scarborough Street. The unique home, built in the 1930s, is 86 feet across, but is a mere 18 feet deep. While it may appear to passerby that this is a mansion, an up-close view shows that the home is much smaller. Hundreds of high school football players gathered at Bulkeley High School in Hartford for Eric Mangini’s annual fundamentals football camp. The former NFL head coach is an alumnus of Bulkeley High School.

“A lot of people don't come back and support where they came up from so it's inspiring when somebody who made it comes back and it gives you hope,” said James Carroll IV who traveled from Springfield, MA to participate.

Fourty-eight towns and five different states were represented at this year’s camp. Attendees competed in drills and 7 on 7's, received advice from high profile guest speakers and got coached by NFL coaches like Ben Bloom and Rob Ryan.

“To see the coaches teach all the other parts of being a good person, of studying and the intangibles, that to me is very rewarding,” said Mangini.

The high school football players left the camp feeling inspired and motivated.

“Just being able not to give up on my dreams just like he did, just to know I can still go back with the decisions that I make,” said Hartford Public High School senior Jermaine Jones.

Woman Swept Away by Waterfall Was Reaching for Branch — Not Taking Photos

A California woman who officials said died while taking photos at a Lake Tahoe waterfall was actually swept away by fast moving waters while reaching for a tree branch, authorities said Sunday.

The North Tahoe Fire Protection District said its initial account, which it publicized in a now-deleted Facebook post about the perils of taking photos in dangerous areas, was based on information “available at the time” from bystanders and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, NBC News reports.

But in a statement posted Sunday, the district said the woman was reaching for a branch last week “when she was taken over the falls.”

In an email, a family friend, Nelly Maltez, said Espinosa didn’t have her phone when she died.“I understand that other accidents have occurred due to individuals taking selfies, but this was most definitely not one of them,” she said.

Timeline of New Canaan Mother's Disappearance

0
0

A 50-year-old mother of five from New Canaan has been missing for over week and her estranged husband and another woman have been arrested in connection to her disappearance.

Here is a look at a timeline of events on the investigation into Jennifer Dulos's disappearance.

On Friday, May 24, Jennifer Dulos dropped her children off at the New Canaan Country School. After that, police said she missed multiple appointments before friends reported her missing around 7 p.m.

Later that day, officers said they found her abandoned black SUV on Lapham Road by Waveny Park.

By Wednesday, May 29, the search for the missing mother intensified at the popular park in New Canaan. That day, officers said they were treating this as a missing person case, while also launching a criminal investigation to determine if Jennifer had been the victim of foul play.

Jennifer's close friend and family spokesperson Carrie Luft spoke with NBC Connecticut and said, "The children are safe and they are doing well given the circumstances. They, of course, miss their mother incredibly."

On Thursday, May 30, six days after Jennifer vanished, police said the search expanded across the state line to a property in Pound Ridge, New York.

NBC Connecticut also obtained court documents from the divorce case of Jennifer and her estranged husband, Fotis Dulos.

In the initial 2017 affidavit, she wrote she was “terrified for (her) family’s safety” and said her “husband has a history of controlling, volatile and delusional behavior.”

But in a court filing from his attorney, Fotis denied those allegations. And the day before being served with divorce papers in June of 2017, he called 911 with his own concerns.

“I’m worried about my wife and kids because they left to go to New York and I haven’t been able to get in touch with them,” Fotis said in a 911 call.

Jennifer moved from their shared home in Farmington to New Canaan around the same time she filed for divorce.

On Friday, May 31, authorities put out a new missing person poster. Officers continued seeking tips from people driving by Waveny Park in New Canaan.

“If you happen to remember anything, just call our tip line. It’s all anonymous,” police said.

By Friday afternoon, state police confirmed the search for clues moved to multiple locations in Hartford including on Milford Street, Albany Avenue, Homestead Avenue and Sigourney Street.

Then on Saturday, June 1, New Canaan Police said they were securing search warrants in their criminal investigation.

On Sunday, June 2, New Canaan Police Chief Leon Krolikowski announced Fotis and Michelle Troconis had been arrested in Avon on Saturday night around 11 p.m.

Fotis and Troconis are each facing charges including tampering with or fabricating physical evidence and hindering prosecution in the first degree, according to authorities.

Officers said both the missing person and criminal investigations are active and dynamic.

As the criminal investigation progresses, authorities said additional criminal charges are expected.

Jennifer has not been located and the search for her is ongoing, police added.

Estranged Husband, Woman Charged in Missing Mom Case

Police have arrested the estranged husband of Jennifer Dulos and another woman in connection to her missing person case.

Officers received a report of a missing person on May 24 around 7 p.m. Police said they identified the missing person as 50-year-old Jennifer Dulos, a New Canaan resident and mother of five children.

New Canaan police have been working with Connecticut State Police, federal law enforcement agencies and other law enforcement agencies to locate Jennifer by exploring all tips and leads.

The law enforcement team said they have launched both a missing person investigation and a criminal investigation and they have worked together throughout the state of Connecticut.

Based on facts and evidence gathered during the criminal investigation, police said arrest warrants were completed for 51-year-old Fotis Dulos and 44-year-old Michelle C. Troconis. The arrest warrants were reviewed by a State's Attorney and a Superior Court Judge, who found probable cause and signed both warrants, authorities added.

On Saturday around 11 p.m., officers said the pair were taken into custody in Avon, Connecticut and were transported to New Canaan Police Headquarters for processing.

Fotis Dulos and Troconis are both facing charges including tampering with or fabricating physical evidence and hindering prosecution in the first degree.

According to police, Fotis Dulos was transported to Bridgeport Correctional Center where he is being held on $500,000 bond. Troconis is being held on a $500,000 bond at New Canaan Police Headquarters. Both are expected to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Monday.

On Sunday, Connecticut State Police were seen searching at a home on Mountain Spring Road in Farmington linked to the Fore Group, which is owned by Fotis Dulos. Authorities have not released details about if the search was connected to the missing person case.

Officers said both the missing person and the criminal investigations are active and dynamic.

As the criminal investigation progresses, authorities said additional criminal charges are expected.

Jennifer has not been located and the search for her is ongoing, police added.

On Sunday following the arrests, Jennifer's family spokesperson released a statement saying in part, "We have no comment at this time. Just urging people to please respect the privacy of Jennifer's family and friends."

Anyone with information is asked to contact New Canaan Police Tip Line at (203) 594-3544.

Dwyane Wade Makes Surprise Appearance at Parkland Graduation

Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade made a surprise appearance on Sunday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School's class of 2019 graduation ceremony.

Wade's connection to Stoneman Douglas is rooted in tragedy. One of the 17 victims of the Parkland school shooting – Joaquin Oliver – was a huge fan of D-Wade.

Oliver was buried in a jersey bearing Wade's name.

At the ceremony, Wade was greeted to loud cheers. Among topics, he spoke about the Parkland tragedy and his visit to the school soon after the shooting.

"I remember being so nervous to see and meet everybody. What would I say? I mean, I grew up in the inner city of Chicago and I've experienced a lot of awful things, but I've never experienced anything to the magnitude that you guys have just experienced," Wade said.

"I remember walking in ... and actually being surprised that everyone was excited to see me," Wade added.

Wade spent more than two hours at the school, giving an impromptu pep talk in the cafeteria and meeting with small groups of students who were directly impacted by the shooting and others who have been active in the #NeverAgain movement against gun violence.

"I just had a great conversation with some of the students at Stoneman Douglas High School about some important/impactful things that they have planned. I’m looking forward to being more involved in the change that they WILL create," Wade wrote on Twitter on March 7, 2018 – the first full day back to school since the shooting.

"He came, he put a lot of smiles on everyone's faces and it was something I think our school really needed," student Jonathan Blank said.

Wade retired from the NBA after 16 years – the vast majority of which while wearing a Miami Heat jersey – in 2019.

Texas Governor Signs State Ban on Red-Light Traffic Cameras

0
0

With the swipe of a pen, Gov. Greg Abbott officially put the brakes on red light traffic cameras in Texas.

Saturday, he posted a video to social media showing him signing House Bill 1631 into law, banning the controversial devices statewide.

For Arlington, Texas, resident Kelly Canon, it was a moment six years in the making.

"I was just ecstatic," Canon said. "I was over the moon. It's been wonderful."

She first became aware of the cameras in 2013, when she received a citation in the mail. Upset that she was sent a $75 ticket for something she wasn't sure she actually did, she embarked on a campaign to do away with the cameras -- first in her hometown.

Fellow activist Faith Bussey quickly joined her.

"It's a due process issue," Bussey said. "We spoke to thousands of people who weren't the ones driving when they got the ticket -- somebody else was driving. They had to take off time from work  to go and fight the ticket. And it's a civil process, not criminal -- so you can't face your accuser."

In 2015, they successfully got the cameras banned in Arlington. And ever since then, they've been frequent visitors to the capitol in Austin, urging state lawmakers to outlaw the devices everywhere.

"I was repeatedly told this bill is dead," Bussey said. "And then all of a sudden, it moved."

After stalling each of the last two legislative sessions, this year the bill, carried by Rep. Jonathan Stickland (R-Bedford), passed overwhelmingly in the State House and Senate -- with the support of more than 100 co-sponsors from both parties.

But not everyone is celebrating.

Local law enforcement was among the most vocal supporters of the cameras, insisting they made a real difference at the intersections where they were installed.

The chiefs of both the Bedford and Plano Police Departments said as much during recent interviews with NBC 5.

"We have seen a dramatic reduction of intersection accidents," Bedford Police Chief Jeff Gibson said. "That means less people are getting hurt traveling our roadways."

"The worst impacts we see other than head-on are side impacts," Plano Police Chief Gregory Rushin said. "So those are things we're trying to prevent. And this is what red light cameras do."

Because the bill was passed with more than two-thirds support by both chambers, the ban becomes law immediately.

However, a provision allows cities to keep operating the cameras until their contracts with vendors expire. Some communities have begun negotiations to terminate the deals earlier.

The law also prevents county tax assessor-collector offices from blocking a citizen's vehicle registration because of unpaid red light camera tickets.

Son of Man Who Died After Assault in Bloomfield Taken Into Custody in Stamford.

The son of a man who died after an assault in Bloomfield has been taken into custody in Stamford, where he was accused of shoplifting at a supermarket.

Police had been searching for 34-year-old Anthony Lewis Bussey since Sunday, May 12 after finding his 60-year-old father with severe injuries and he was taken into custody Sunday, June 2 at a Stop & Shop in Stamford.

Police said he is accused of shoplifting.

Police said in May that Bussey was wanted for questioning after officers responding to reports of a domestic assault on Glenwood Avenue around 10:40 a.m. found the victim unresponsive and bleeding heavily from his head.

The person who filed the complaint said he had been in the basement of the house and heard what sounded like a fight, so he went upstairs and found the victim on the floor, bleeding heavily from the head.

Officers did not find any suspect.

The victim was transported to St. Francis Hospital and found to have a broken arm and a skull fracture, police said. He died the next day, according to police.

Due to the significant nature of the incident, detectives advised the State Prosecutor's Office, who recommended the State Police Major Crime Unit process the scene. A search warrant was secured and executed to process the scene, police said.

Police said last month that they secured a warrant charging Bussey with assault in the first-degree on an elderly person and new charges were expected following the victim’s death.

Bussey was taken into custody in Stamford under a warrant charging him with assault on an elderly person in the first degree.

He was held on $500,000 bond.

Attorneys for Parents Charged in College Cheating Scheme Appear in Court

0
0

Lawyers for 19 parents, including Hollywood actress Lori Loughlin and her fashion designer husband Mossimo Gianulli, learned Monday that their clients will have to appear back in federal court in Boston in July.

The judge wants to be able to speak with them to ensure they're clear about information and procedure moving forward.

The parents have not accepted plea deals. All have waived their right to appear in court.

Dozens of wealthy parents are accused of bribing their children's way into elite universities. Some parents allegedly paid to have their children recruited as athletes to get admitted into their university of choice, while others allegedly paid to have their children's entrance exam scores altered.

Loughlin and Giannulli were accused of agreeing to pay $500,000 in bribes to the University of Southern California to have their daughters admitted as part of the crew team. Neither girl rowed.

The attorney for Massachusetts millionaire John Wilson was also in court Monday. Prosecutors say Wilson paid $120,000 to get his son into USC as a member of the water polo team. And he also allegedly has been trying to work deals to get his daughters into Stanford and Harvard.

Fifty people have already been charged in connection with the scheme. Several others have already brokered plea deals -- just today, a former soccer coach at the University of Southern California became the latest to accept one.

Massachusetts attorney Ed Ryan believes some of the parents could have a strong case at trial, but it will be a complicated one to get through.

"I think there are some serious and legitimate legal questions involved in this case," he said.

Prosecutors said today they've already turned over 3 million pages of evidence to defense attorney's already. Prosecutors further raised concern over possible conflicts of interest, suggesting some of the defense teams are representing multiple people involved in the case.

"There could be other firms that were involved early on in this case that represented other people who aren't charged, or were involved in other facets of the case," Ryan said.
