Heat Waves Could Kill Thousands in U.S. Cities

If global warming sometimes seems like a distant or abstract threat, new research casts the phenomenon in stark, life-or-death terms. It predicts that in the absence of significant progress in efforts to curb emissions of temperature-raising greenhouse gases, extreme heat waves could claim thousands of lives in major U.S. cities, NBC News reported.

If the global average temperature rises 3 degrees Celsius (5.4 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels — which some scientists say is likely if nations honor only their current commitments for curbing emissions — a major heat wave could kill almost 6,000 people in New York City. Similar events could kill more than 2,500 in Los Angeles and more than 2,300 in Miami.

But the new research also indicates that if the U.S. and other nations take aggressive steps to limit warming, many of those deaths from extreme heat might be avoided.

“There is, actually, still hope, and a very small window of opportunity” to keep global warming below international targets and prevent some heat-related deaths, said Eunice Lo, a climate scientist at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and a co-author of a paper describing the research, published June 5 in the journal Science Advances.

After a 4-Year-Old Took Doll From Store, Video Shows Phoenix Police Pulling Gun on Parents

A Phoenix couple has filed a $10 million lawsuit against the city after a video showed police officers arresting and drawing a gun on them after their 4-year-old daughter allegedly stole a doll, NBC News reports.

Dravon Ames and his fiancee, Iesha Harper, had just left a dollar store on May 29 with their daughters, ages 1 and 4, and were in their car when they realized the older girl had taken a doll, according to a notice of claim filed Wednesday with the city. The couple drove the girls to their babysitter at an apartment complex nearby, where they were stopped and confronted by police in the parking lot.

Phoenix police, who said they are conducting an internal investigation of the incident, released a video Tuesday shot by a bystander showing an officer appearing to push a handcuffed man, believed to be Ames, against the side of a car and kicking his legs. "When I tell you to do something, you f------ do it!" an officer could be heard screaming at the handcuffed Ames.

"The Phoenix Police Department takes all allegations of misconduct seriously and for this reason, this incident is currently being investigated by the Professional Standards Bureau," a Phoenix Police Department statement said.

Support for Beginning Impeachment Hearings Grows Among Democrats in New NBC News/WSJ Poll

More Democratic voters believe Congress should begin impeachment hearings on President Donald Trump’s conduct while in office, but the country at large remains divided on the matter, according to a new national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. Overall, 27 percent of Americans say there’s enough evidence to begin impeachment hearings now — up 10 points from last month, NBC News reports.

Another 24 percent think Congress should continue investigating to see if there’s enough evidence to hold impeachment hearings in the future, which is down eight points. And 48 percent believe that Congress should not hold impeachment hearings and that Trump should finish out his term as president — unchanged from a month ago.

The NBC/WSJ poll comes after former special counsel Robert Mueller addressed the nation in late May (stating that if he had had confidence that the president did not commit a crime when it came to obstruction of justice “we would have said so”), as well as after the Trump administration has defied Democratic subpoenas for further testimony on the Russia investigation.

Trump has continued to maintain that he didn’t commit obstruction of justice in Mueller’s Russia probe.

Ortiz's Wife Posts Father's Day Tribute Amid Investigation

David Ortiz's wife paid a special tribute to her husband as he continues to recover from a gunshot wound in Massachusetts General Hospital and authorities continue to investigate the shooting.

Tiffany Ortiz wrote in an Instagram post that this Father's Day on Sunday, "brings with it a new appreciation for life and an awareness in what truly matters."

Tiffany Ortiz and the man known as Big Papi have three children together and have been together for 23 years.

She wrote that it has "been deeply felt that the outside world also acknowledges his presence as a father figure to all." She urged everyone to "celebrate this Papi's Day with the ones you love."

It’s now been almost a week since Ortiz was shot in the back in the Dominican Republic, and the motive remains a mystery.

Dominican officials are still looking for Luis Alfredo Rivas Clase, who they said was part of the murder plot of the Red Sox legend.

Ten suspects are in custody, implicated in the murder plot against Ortiz.

Wearing bulletproof vests and ballistic helmets, Jose Eduardo Ciprian, Carlos Rafael Alvares, Lanny Estephanie Perez, Rolfi Ferreyra Cruz, Joel Rodriguez de la Cruz, Porfirio Ayendi Vasquez, Reynaldo Rodriguez Valenzuela, Oliver Moises Mirabal, Eddy Vladimir Feliz Garcia and Alexander Perez Vizcaino showed up at court Friday where they were ordered to remain in prison while the investigation continues.

The alleged shooter, who admitted to Dominican authorities he fired the shot, told reporters Ortiz wasn’t the intended target.

The investigation has revealed that after firing, Ferreyra Cruz ran inside a nearby home where he told them he had been robbed and that he had disarmed the assailants. He asked the owner of the house to order him a taxi, and that’s how he escaped.

“I know that the FBI is somewhat involved in the investigation,” Rep. Adriano Espaillat, D-New York said on Friday.

Espaillat, a native of the Dominican Republic, said that because Ortiz is an American national, the U.S. is asisting in the investigation.

"I would hope that they get to the bottom and we find the intellectual actors of this horrible crime," he said.

Man Shot Dead at Costco by Off-Duty LAPD Officer Identified

An off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer shopping with his family at a Costco in Corona was allegedly assaulted by a man, whose family says he had a mental disability, and the off-duty officer responded by shooting and killing the man and shooting and injuring two of the man's family members.

The only weapon involved in the incident belonged to the off-duty police officer, who has yet to be identified, the Corona Police Department said in a statement released Saturday.

The shooting took place on Friday at around 7:46 p.m. in the 400 block of North McKinley Street, the Corona Police Department said. Thirty-two-year-old Kenneth French, of Riverside, was identified Saturday as the person killed in the incident.

French's cousin, Rick Shureih, told NBC Los Angeles Sunday that French had a mental disability and described him as a "gentle giant." Shureih said that French was non-verbal, non-violent and had no issues in the past. The two other people injured in the shooting were French's mother and father, who monitored and took care of their son, Shureih said.

The two injured family members of the dead man were not identified but both were in the hospital in critical condition, the CPD said in the statement released Saturday.

Shureih said Sunday that Russell and Paola French were both shot at least once, with Russell doing much better.

Although fears of an active shooter sent the store into a panic, authorities said the investigation concluded that this was an "isolated occurrence" and that it "was not an uncontained active shooter incident."

Unprovoked, a man unknown to the off-duty officer and his family assaulted the officer while he was holding a small child, the Corona Police Department said in Saturday's statement. The child was not injured in the incident, and the officer was taken to a local hospital and subsequently released, police said.

If you witnessed this incident and have not provided your statement to the police, please contact Lieutenant Newman at 951-817-5788 or email Robert.Newman@CoronaCA.gov.

The 2019 Travelers Championship kicks off on Monday.

And as tens of thousands of golf fans head to TPC River Highlands, you can count on NBC Connecticut to bring you all the excitement on-air and online.

[[511384792,c]]

On Sunday, crews were putting the finishing touches on spots before the start of the tournament.

“I’d say excited, kind of feel the adrenaline. You know what’s going to happen tomorrow,” Tournament Director Nathan Grube said.

It has been months of work to get everything ready at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell.

[[511384832,c]]

“I think Connecticut is very proud of this event and so when it kicks off you see it in the crowd’s faces. They walk up. You see it in the volunteers faces, everybody is just excited it’s here,” Grube said.

While there are plenty of activities all day to keep people busy, the real reason people love watching the tournament is the 156 players who will compete during four rounds from Thursday to Sunday.

And you can bet fans will be rushing to see some big names who are returning.

“This year with Mickelson coming back - he hasn’t been back in about 15 years. Bubba, being the three-time champion, can tie the all-time record if he wins. Jordan Spieth coming back. I mean there is a lot for fans to see,” Grube said.

Grube says they’ve already seen a bump in ticket sales this year.

Despite all the hard work, one thing is out of their control – the weather.

Organizers are watching the forecast closely for this week-long tradition and are thankful spectators are okay adjusting.

“It’s one of those things. You run an outdoor event. Until we build a large, red umbrella over the entire golf course, you know, weather will always be a part of it,” Grube said.

A night of celebration turned to one of violence and tragedy when a mass shooting left at least one person dead and seven others injured during a graduation party in Southwest Philadelphia.

Around 60 people were attending the party at 70th and Buist avenues around 10 p.m. Sunday when an unidentified gunman fired at least eight shots.

Police said four people in their 20s and four teenagers ages 15 to 17 were struck by the gunfire. One victim died; that person was in their 20s, police said. The wounded are expected to survive, according to police.

No arrests have been made and police have not yet released a description of the shooter. They're hoping to find surveillance video and are interviewing witnesses.

The shooting came at the end of a violent weekend in Philadelphia. Prior to the incident, at least three people were killed and 15 others hurt in separate shootings across the city.

"What you got to get at is the hearts and minds of people who want to pull out a gun and fire at a group of 60 people," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said. "That's something that's even more troubling."

If you have any information on the shooting, please call Philadelphia police.

Man Charged in Norwalk Cold Case to Appear in Court

A Maine man who is accused of sexually assaulting and strangling an 11-year-old girl in Norwalk in 1986 has been extradited back to Connecticut and is expected to face a judge on Monday.

Marc Karun is expected to be arraigned on Monday morning.

Norwalk Police worked with Maine State Police to arrest Karun, 53, on Wednesday.

In 1986, Karun would have been 21 years old when 11-year-old Kathleen Flynn went missing.

Police said she was walking home from school on a September afternoon, but she never reached her house.

The next morning, search teams found Kathleen's body.

Authorities said she was sexually assaulted and strangled.

Her murder really shook the Norwalk community.

"People felt within themselves, 'what if that was my daughter?' Just think about what if it was my daughter, it was devastating," said Dominic Muro, of Norwalk.

Karun was arrested in Maine and extradited back to Connecticut. He is facing murder with special circumstances and kidnapping charges and is being held on $5 million bond.

Kathleen's family released a statement thanking the Norwalk Police for "bringing Kathleen's murderer to justice."

According to our NBC affiliate in Maine, Karun was charged with sexual assault and kidnapping in a separate case just six months before Flynn was murdered. But the victim in that case did not wish to testify, so Karun was released on probation 20 days before Flynn disappeared.

25 Years Later: What It Was Like in Front of the OJ Simpson Chase

$

Los Angeles newsman Mark Coogan, in his best rendition of famed sportscaster Howard Cosell, could not resist.

"The Juice is on the loose!"

But this wasn't a broken-tackle, open-field sprint to an end zone. We were at Parker Center, which at the time was the home of the Los Angeles Police Department.

O.J. Simpson was a fugitive from justice.

NBC News photographer Dana Roecker and I quickly received information that Simpson was in Orange County and had been visiting the gravesite of the woman he was accused of murdering.

We decided to head that way.

It wasn't long after punching up scanner traffic from the California Highway Patrol that we learned a pursuit was underway, and Simpson was headed in our direction.

At that point, we got off the freeway and got back on in the opposite direction.  Roecker pulled the van over, took out his M-2 camera and sat in the passenger seat.

I got behind the wheel.

I have seen plenty of police pursuits in my career, but the sight in the driver's side mirror a minute later was something only an over-the-top Hollywood showrunner could conceive.

A phalanx of black and white police units (12? maybe 20?) trailed a white Ford Bronco in the middle of Interstate 5, with lights on and sirens blaring.

We pulled in front.

The van we were in was unmarked, unassuming and incapable of transmitting live pictures for television. The only pictures Dana could take were through the van's rear-view mirrors, which is why driver A.C. Cowlings appears on the left. We kept our distance. We didn't want to interfere with the police or the story.

Then, there was Simpson's mental state. He was said to be suicidal. Our fear was that just the image of a television camera could set him over the edge.

The video is three minutes of the 20 minutes where we led the pursuit. We eventually allowed the Ford Bronco to pass after two cars in front of ours collided while trying to get close. It was too dangerous.

A quarter of a century later, the police chase of Simpson and the Ford Bronco remains one of the most bizarre incidents ever to take place on an American freeway. But as the families of Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman remind us, this spectacle should never overshadow the brutality and heartache which provoked it.

Phoenix Chief Says Police Response to Incident With 4-Year-Old Is 'Unacceptable'

The police chief in Phoenix, Arizona, apologized Sunday for her department's "unacceptable" handling of an alleged shoplifting incident after a video showed police officers arresting and drawing a gun on a couple whose 4-year-old daughter had allegedly stolen a doll from a dollar store, NBC News reported

“What we saw in that video isn’t in keeping with good policing,” Jeri Williams told NBC affiliate KPNX. “This is not what should have happened in that circumstance.”

The child’s parents, Dravon Ames and Iesha Harper, filed notice of a $10 million claim last week over the incident, which occurred on May 29 in a parking lot. Video captured by a bystander showed officers appearing to push and kick a handcuffed man believed to be Ames and handcuffing Harper, who is pregnant, after an unidentified woman came to take care of the couples’ two young daughters.

"I felt like I did everything I could to show the officer that I was complying," Ames told Al Sharpton on MSNBC Saturday, adding that the experience was traumatizing for him and his young children. "I looked the barrel in the eyes, my kids looked the barrel in the eyes. I thought they were gonna start shooting."
