Guilford Police Department collected over 80 guns at a gun buyback event on Saturday in honor of Ethan Song, a 15-year-old who shot himself with a handgun owned by a friend's father in January 2018.

During the event, which took place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the police department on Church Street, 83 guns were turned in. Police said the 83 guns included 46 handguns, 31 rifles, three Derringer-type guns and three assault weapons.

Anyone who turned in a gun was given a gift card ranging from $25 to $200 depending on the type of weapon.

In an effort to promote safe and responsible gun storage, the Yale-New Haven Hospital Injury Prevention Program provided safe gun storage information pamphlets. Free gun locks and gun storage safes were also given out to anyone interested in safe storage options for their guns.

Officials distributed nine small safes, 18 large safes and 15 gun locks at the event, police said.

Residents are reminded that they can turn in unwanted weapons for destruction to the Guilford Police Department at any time.

Local Organization Wants Parents to Know About Free Summer Meal Programs

The end of the school year could mean that some children go without regular meals, but a local organization is ramping up its efforts to let parents know that free meals are available through the summer.

The Hartford-based organization End Hunger Connecticut! said many families aren't aware that several school districts and organizations around the state offer three meals a day through the summer at no cost.

The organization's executive director said right now, 20-percent of kids who participate in a meal program throughout the school year are using the program over the summer.

"One of the things we really worry about…the developmental delays that will happen because they’re hungry. You need food in order to fuel your body to continue to grow and when children are hungry in the summer, they’re not developing mentally," said Robin Lamott Sparks, the executive director of End Hunger Connecticut.

Explosions Rock Largest Refinery on East Coast in Philadelphia

A small fire continued to burn Saturday afternoon more than 24 hours after a series of gas explosions at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery rocked South Philadelphia and sent a massive fireball into the air.

"My initial reaction was 'Damn, this is bad,'" Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said Saturday. "It was a frightening scene. I'm thankful that no one got killed or seriously injured.”

Four refinery staff members suffered minor injuries and were treated at the site, a refinery spokeswoman said. A shelter-in-place order was also briefly issued Friday morning after the fire broke out around 4 a.m.

PES officials remained at the refinery Saturday, working to isolate a line that will continue to burn until workers can turn off a valve. Personnel from both the Philadelphia Fire Department and Office of Emergency Management were at the scene as well.

On Friday, conditions were too dangerous to access the valve, Philadelphia Deputy Fire Commissioner Craig Murphy said.

Some residents in Philadelphia said the explosions knocked art off their walls. The blasts were felt as far as South Jersey. The largest blast was so strong that the GOES-16 meteorological satellite recorded it from space.

"I thought it was a meteor or something," a resident who lives next to the complex said after seeing a mushroom-shaped cloud rising from the facility.

Kenney said that city agencies would continue to monitor the situation and air quality.

Late Friday, City Councilmember-at-Large Helen Gym called for the closure of the refinery until PES could assure the safety of its workers and neighboring residents.

Kenney said health and safety issues need to be addressed, but he stopped short of calling for the closure of the plant.

"We will see what the federal and state authorities say, if that's what is called for that's what we will do," Kenney said.

Officials have not released details on what caused the explosion.

The spokeswoman said PES officials have not determined what product is burning, but said it could be propane. That differs from Philadelphia Fire Department reports.

Deputy Fire Commissioner Craig Murphy said a vat of butane had ignited and eventually exploded. A series of smaller explosions erupted as the fire worked its way through the tangle of pipes carrying fuel across the complex. In all, three explosions took place.

Workers were on site at the time of the explosion, but were far enough away to avoid serious harm, Murphy said.

The Chemical Safety Board — an independent, non-regulatory federal agency — said it will deploy a four-person team Monday to investigate the explosions and fire.

Large pieces of debris were thrown blocks away and rained down onto streets and traffic lights. A plume of thick, black smoke billowed east from the large complex near Philadelphia International Airport and over portions of South Philadelphia, the Delaware River and into South Jersey.

The smoke could be dangerous, according to Peter DeCarlo, a Drexel University professor and air-quality expert.

"Immediate exposure can trigger asthma and other issues," he cautioned. "If it were me, what I would do is leave the area for as much of the day as possible."

The Philadelphia Department of Health, however, said that they measured the air and discovered "no findings that would point to any immediate danger in the surrounding community at this time."

The Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery is the largest single source of particulate pollution in the Philadelphia area even when there isn't an emergency.

The refinery processes 335,000 barrels of crude oil every day at two plants in the complex — Girard Point and Point Breeze. The fire broke out at the Girard Point portion. Gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and petrochemicals are also produced at the plant.

The refinery dates back to the 19th Century, opening a year after the Civil War ended.

"The PES Philadelphia Refining Complex has been “part of the neighborhood” in South Philadelphia for over 150 years and is closely tied to the growth of the American oil industry in the 19th century," PES says on its website.

Friday's fire comes nearly two weeks after another incident at the same complex. On June 10, a small fire broke out at the facility. No one was hurt, but it reignited protests by a group of environmentalists and community members who were concerned about the plant's safety.

Another fire broke out at the complex in 2015

In its statement, PES said it is "thankful that no one was seriously injured."

"We sincerely apologize for any concern this has caused the community. Concerned residents can call our Community Information Hotline at 215-339-7300 for updates and the status of the refining complex."

A mother and her two young boys were found dead in a "smoke-filled" home on Staten Island and police are calling their deaths a homicide.

Police responding to a 911 call reporting an assault in progress at a home on Palisade Street in Arrochar around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday discovered a small fire burning, Assistant Chief Kenneth Corey of the NYPD's Patrol Borough Staten Island said at a press conference.

A 36-year-old woman and her sons, ages 2 and 3, were found dead in one room in the home, Corey said. The mom suffered trauma to the head, a source told NBC 4 New York.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which had filled the home with smoke, according to Corey.

Police believe the mother was an active military member, Corey said.

An investigation determined a 36-year-old man believed to be the father of the children was found walking along the Verrazzano Bridge around 7:48 a.m. on Saturday, he added.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation, he said. He is also believed to be an active member of the U.S. military, according to police.

Police didn't immediately provide additional details or say whether anyone had been arrested in connection with the three deaths.

The city's Medical Examiner will determine how the woman and her children died. An investigation is ongoing.

State Police Release Footage From Inside Hartford Trash Facility in Missing Mom Case

State police have released footage from inside a Hartford trash facility in the search for missing New Canaan mother of five Jennifer Dulos.

State police have been investigating for more than two weeks at a Hartford trash facility in connection with the disappearance of Jennifer Dulos, who has been missing for nearly a month, and a police source said the search at that plant is winding down.

On Friday, police said the search at the Hartford facility should be "concluded in the very near future," but the exact ending date is not known.

“I think they would all agree that their efforts have been worth it,” Brian Foley, an aide to the commission of the state Department of Emergency Service and Public Protection, said Tuesday.

He declined to go into detail about the evidence that investigators might have gathered while sifting through piles of shredded garbage.

State Police troopers have worked in 12-hour shifts at the trash plant and one employee who witnessed the search describes investigators combing for clues through mountains of trash shredded into eight-inch pieces. State police said they are using cadaver dogs to search for a human odor in the pile.

Police are going through garbage that would have been collected along Albany Avenue in Hartford in the days after Jennifer Dulos disappeared.

Police first arrived at Material Innovation and Recycling Authority, a trash-to-energy plant in Hartford, in connection with the disappearance on Monday, June 3 and the search has continued in the weeks since.

Dulos was last seen on Friday, May 24 when she dropped her children off at school in New Canaan.

Mom Pushes Baby Stroller Out of Harm’s Way as Car Hits Her in San Diego

A mom walking and pushing her 4-month-old baby in a stroller in San Diego neighborhood Otay Mesa Saturday was hurt when a driver plowed into the pair; a witness said the woman pushed her baby boy out of harm’s way seconds before the impact.

“It was shocking; I’m still in shock,” said witness Alberto Martinez.

Martinez was jogging along Palm Avenue near Grissom Street in the south San Diego area at around 11:45 a.m. when he saw a red Toyota Corolla zip by. He noticed a woman nearby, pushing a baby in a stroller.

Seconds later – as the car barreled toward the woman – Martinez said he saw the woman quickly push her baby out of way. The driver in the Toyota slammed into a curb and then hit the woman before rolling the vehicle.

“He was speeding; he was going way too fast,” Martinez recounted. “She got hit pretty bad.”

The car wound up flipped on its side; shattered glass, a street light pole, road signs and other debris were strewn about.

[[511680062,C]]

Martinez ran over to the woman and the baby to see if they were okay. He said he looked at the baby, and the infant was fine. The driver had hit part of the stroller, but the woman took the brunt of the hit, he added.

Martinez said the woman tried to get up, but it appeared her leg was broken. He told her not to move and police soon arrived.

San Diego Police Department investigators said the 22-year-old mom suffered serious injuries, including a closed tibia and fibula fracture that required surgery. She was taken to a local hospital; her name was not released.

Police said that although the stroller was also hit by the car, the baby was not harmed. The infant's grandparents took him to the hospital for evaluation, as a precaution.

SDPD said the driver -- a 39-year-old man -- suffered minor injuries, mainly pain to his right hand.

The collision is under investigation. No one else was hurt.

Crews are investigating after they battled a multi-family house fire in Hartford Saturday night.

The fire was located on Chadwick Avenue on the front porch of the third floor and was contained with slight extension into the third floor apartment.

Firefighters assisted one resident getting out of the house from the second floor. He was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

Crews said the fire was a tough one to attack with their ladder trucks because of its location near overhead wires. Firefighters were able to get a handle on the fire using ground ladders.

The fire is now under control, firefighters said.

No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Hartford was jamming Saturday night as five events were packed into a close vicinity.

About 30,000 people were expected to attend events in the capital city.

Hartford Police warned event-goers to come down early. Some listened while others sat in a lot of traffic.

But despite the congestion, people were pumped.

“We’re going to hit the tailgate for a little bit and then we’re going to jam out all night,” Ryan Riley of Hartford said, who was going to the Dave Matthews Band concert at the Xfinity Theater.

“It’s a kickoff to summer. We’re happy about it and you know we have a lot more events. There’s going to be more times when we have sold out events, a baseball game and now we have a soccer stadium as well. We’re ready for the challenge,” Hartford Police Lt. Paul Cicero said.

NBC Connecticut was there as police officers prepped for the night ahead.

The Yard Goats game sold out.

About a mile away, 15,000 Dave Matthews Band fans filling up Xfinity.

“Tonight’s my 27th show. Came down from Vermont. We were at the show in Mansfield last night. Hoping for the same creativity tonight. That’s what keeps us coming back,” Nick Bredice said.

And around the corner, a Cirque Du Soleil show was underway under the “Big Top” on Market Street.

Throw in the Hartford Latino Fest and the Black-eyed & Blues Fest at Bushnell Park, the capital city was busy.

“I’ve been coming since I was little. It’s just such a nice event and everyone is so kind and good food and everything,” Frankie Blukincy said.

“It’s been such good weather compared to these rainy days we’re happy that it wasn’t bad weather today,” she said.

For those who grew up in the area, they’re happy to see Hartford as such a hotspot.

“Up and coming and you can really see it, so it’s cool to live here,” Riley said.
