One person is dead after a car crash in Madison early Saturday morning.

The incident took place on Interstate 95 North at around 4:30 a.m., according to police.

A car veered to the right at the Exit 57 off ramp, exiting toward the left side. The car continued through the grass area until it hit a small embankment off the highway, police said.

The car continued into the wooded area and down a large embankment before hitting multiple trees and coming to a final, uncontrolled stop, police said.

Police said the car then caught fire.

One of the two passengers walked to a nearby gas station to report the crash, according to police. That passenger was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital with minor injuries and is expected to be OK.

Firefighters distinguished the fire and located the other passenger in the car, who died in the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Troop F at 860-399-2100.

Witnesses Recall El Paso Shooting: 'I Was Just So Worried About Those Kids, Man'

Glen Oakley was in a sport store in El Paso Saturday when a child ran in saying there was an active shooter in Walmart. Oakley didn't believe him and kept shopping.

But then he heard gunshots. Oakley pulled out his legally permitted gun and started to run for the parking lot when he noticed unaccompanied children all around him.

“It was just a whole bunch of kids up in there,” Oakley said in an interview with local NBC affiliate KTSM.

He tried to pick up the children, but they were so anxious that they writhed out of his grasp.

“I was just so worried about those kids, man,” he said.

Oakley was in the middle of a mass shooting at a Walmart and the Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso that Texas officials said left 20 people dead and 26 wounded. The suspect was from Allen, Texas — a roughly nine-hour drive from where the shooting took place.

Police have confirmed a suspect has been apprehended. Another person was also detained, though the details around their alleged involvement in the shooting was not immediately clear, according to NBC News

A video on KTSM.com purports to show people hiding under tables near the Walmart entrance as a gun fires

Leslie, a Walmart employee, was working near the self-checkout when she heard what she thought were loud boxes being dropped — until the sounds got closer.

“I got all the people that I could, I even found a little girl that was missing from her parents, and I got her, too. I tried to get as many people as I could out,” Leslie told KTSM

Adriana Quezada told The Associated Press that she and her two children were in Walmart's women's clothing section when she heard what sounded like roof construction. After it became clear that there was an active shooter, Quezada's kids threw themselves on the floor, then escaped the store through an emergency exit.

Another visibly shaken woman, who Telemundo El Paso did not name, said the shooter was wearing beige pants and a green shirt. She said she saw many people who were dead.

“Horrible, no — it was very ugly,” she said.

Daughter, Mom, Aunt Killed in California Cliff Collapse

The three victims killed when a cliff collapsed on a beach in Leucadia, California, Friday were related: a daughter, mother and aunt, spending a day at the beach celebrating life and a recent family triumph.

The women were identified by surviving family members as Annie Clave, Julie Davis, and Elizabeth Cox. Davis was Clave’s mother. Cox was Davis’ sister and Clave’s aunt.

[[516107301,C]]

The family of the victims sent an email to friends and loved ones Saturday about the cliff collapse that shattered their worlds.

The email, obtained by NBC 7 Saturday morning, said the family was at Grandview Beach Friday, enjoying a beach day celebrating the tough battle Cox had fought against breast cancer.

The women were at the beach with a large group that included many friends and family members, including children.

Suddently, tragedy struck.

The family looked on in horror as a cliff came crashing down. A lead Encinitas official would later describe that tumbling cliff as being approximately 30 feet wide, with a depth of about 25 feet.

[[514868662,C]]

The email said Cox died "instantly" at the scene. Davis was airlifted to Scripps Encinitas Hospital and Clave was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Neither would survive their injuries.

The email said Clave "enriched the lives of all those around her with the joy and fun she brought to all," and called Davis an "incredible grandmother."

Davis was affectionately known as "Mimi" to her grandchildren, to whom, the email said, she "gave so much love and care to."

[[514547891,C]]

The three women leave behind spouses, children, and many members of their extended families.

"Writing this seems so empty in comparison to the life, love, and joy that these 3 beautiful irreplaceable women brought to our family and friends," the email read.

"The nature of the accident and the loss is incomprehensible to all of us, our children and those around us. It is so sudden and traumatic, and our hearts go out to each other and all the children in our family who will need strength to try and understand this, when we ourselves will never understand it."

[[514802142,C]]

The family email said they are grateful none of the children in the family were hurt in the cliff collapse.

The email said many of Davis’ grandchildren – who are "generally glued to their Mimi" – had been hanging around the impact zone just moments before the cliff collapsed.

The email went on to say the families are finding strength to come together and remember the beautiful memories Clave, Davis and Cox left behind.

"They will always be with us," the note added.

[[515270052,C]]

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office has yet to formally identify the victims; that information is expected at a later time.

Meanwhile, Encinitas officials said Saturday morning the rocks to the left and right of the cliff that collapsed were "fractured" and "still active." Grandview Beach was closed to the public overnight, but reopened late Saturday morning.

Grandview Beach, located off Neptune Avenue, is a popular surfing spot located in the city of Encinitas in San Diego's North County. The beach was filled with people enjoying a sunny summer day when the earth came tumbling down.

A sewage spill has caused temporary beach closures in Westport.

All Town of Westport beaches and Sherwood Island State Park will remain closed to swimming and fishing until testing is complete.

The fire department was notified of a sewage leak in the Saugatuck River at the area of the Interstate 95 overpass, they said.

Responders said they found what appeared to be sewage flowing up from under the river to the surface.

The Sewer Department called in multiple vacuum trucks to haul the sewage across the river to the treatment plant, crews said.

Westport officials said they were planning to replace the sewage pipe within the next two weeks, but have expedited the process as a result of the spill.

Swimming has been closed since 6:30 p.m. Saturday and will remain closed until testing verifies the water is safe to swim in, firefighters said.

Crews said testing is scheduled for Monday.

Ohio Shooting: Gunman Kills 9 Outside Dayton Bar

A man wearing body armor and armed with a rifle and high-capacity magazines opened fire on a line of people waiting to get inside a bar in downtown Dayton, Ohio, on Saturday night, killing 9 people and injuring 26 in less than a minute, according to police.

A survivor described "bodies falling in the line" to get into the bar. The suspected gunman has been killed as well, according to police.

The shooter opened fire outside Ned Peppers Bar in Dayton's Oregon District around 1 a.m local time, officials and witnesses said. Police patrolling the area engaged shot the suspect within a minute, police said.

"If Dayton police had not gotten to the shooter in under a minute - and think about that, nine killed and 26 injured in under a minute - hundred of people in the Oregon District would have been killed," Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley said.

The gunman was shot by several officers, police said. They have not released the shooter's identity or information about a possible motive.

Dayton's shooting comes just hours after a 21-year-old killed 20 people and injured 26 more at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas

"Clearly, the question has to be, why does Dayton have to be the 250th shooting in America?" Whaley said. "250 this year. El Paso was 249, Dayton was 250."

Eye witnesses of the attack also described the speed with which the shooting occurred.

"I turn around and you can just see bodies falling in the line," Anthony Reynolds told NBC News. "You hear about it, you see it on TV, but like they say, when it hits home, it hits different."

Reynolds said he was leaving the bar when the shooting happened, and described the shooter as a heavy-set white man. He said he knew one of the people killed.

Police also said the FBI is assisting with the investigation and a family assistance center will be set up at the Dayton Convention Center.

Witness Taylor Mayberry said she and a friend heard gunshots erupt inside Ned Peppers Bar. She told NBC she dove to the ground and started running to the bathroom, where others were already hiding. She said she didn't see the shooter because the bar was crowded.

Mayberry said she got separated from her friend -- a nurse -- who later called her from a neighboring bar after running out Ned Peppers' back door and helping the victims.

"She says she ran around the block to the front of the bar and said she was one of the first people on the site to do compressions, so she said she did compressions on five people, probably, and wasn’t able to save any of them," Mayberry said. "She says people were gasping for air and she was covered in blood; she lost her phone and just trying to save these people’s lives."

Reynolds described the Oregon historic district as full of bars and restaurants, live bands and young people on a Saturday night. He also referred to the El Paso shooting.

"Two of them in one day, it's starting to get scary with these mass shootings," Reynolds said.

Hundreds Participate in 14th Annual Walnut Beach Ice Cream 5K in Milford

Talk about a sweet incentive. Nearly 500 runners pounded the streets of Milford Sunday in a 5k where the final reward was ice cream.

“It would probably get me up in the morning and able to run a 5k if I knew ice cream was the treat at the end of the day,” said Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Milford Megan Altomare.

The Walnut Beach Ice Cream run was started by Milford ice cream shop owner Susan Patrick, who wanted to showcase her community. She said she wanted to get more people to the beach area and to do so, provided a delicious incentive.

“Thirteen years ago when I started the creamery, I decided to do a 5k race and I thought maybe serving ice cream at the end of the race would get people To come out and run a little,” said Patrick who owns the Walnut Beach Creamery, which provided treats at the end of the race.

For Patrick, it is a triple scoop opportunity. She is able to promote her ice cream business and Milford beach area while benefiting the Boys and Girls Club of Milford, where all race proceeds go.

“Because of this race, we’re able to serve over 600 kids a year,” explained Altomare. “This is one of our major events and we’re able to charge a minimal fee of $200 per year for kids to attend our program every single day after school.”

The race itself was a great success. Jake Mattei and Alli Keneally were the top male and female finishers, but even for them, the real winners were the children benefiting from this charitable run.

“It’s always nice to come out here and run a road race, but to do it for the kids is awesome,” said Jake Mattei of Bethany, who was the top male finisher with a time of 16:08.

Top female finisher Alli Keneally of Shelton agrees, “It means a lot to me because if I was a little kid and I saw that people were running for me to have programs in the summer, I would be very grateful."

Believe it or not, after running a 5k, some runners aren’t in the mood for ice cream. No worries though. Runners can bring their numbers to the Walnut Beach Creamery until October to celebrate their sweet finish.

Connecticut Officials React to Deadly Mass Shootings in El Paso, Dayton

Connecticut officials are reacting after deadly mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio within 24 hours of each other this weekend.

El Paso authorities said 20 people were killed and 26 others were injured when a man opened fire at a Walmart near a mall on Saturday morning.

The suspected shooter, 21-year-old Patrick Wood Crusius, has been booked on capital murder charges, according to police.

U.S. Representatives Rosa DeLauro and John Larson reacted to the news of the El Paso shooting with a call for action.

"The El Paso mass shooting is tragic. My heart goes out to the victims, their families, and the entire community. This is not normal. We must address the epidemic of gun violence in our country with action," Rep. DeLauro tweeted.

"Yet another tragedy has struck our nation. My heart breaks for the victims and their families in El Paso. We must end this epidemic of violence that’s tearing our nation apart," Rep. Larson added in a tweet.

Congressman Jim Himes also tweeted a statement following the El Paso shooting demanding a change.

"I ran out of words long ago. No other country has this problem. If you aren’t acting to solve this problem now, you are complicit. Spare me your pathetic pseudo-pious thoughts and prayers. Tell me what you will do now or keep quiet and hang your head in shame. #ElPasoShooting," he tweeted.

Less than 24 hours later, a man wearing body armor, armed with a rifle and high-capacity magazines opened fire on a line of people waiting to get inside a bar overnight in Dayton, Ohio, city officials said. The suspected shooter was quickly killed by police and has been identified by a senior law enforcement official as 24-year-old Connor Betts.

Authorities said nine people were killed, not including the shooter and at least 27 others are injured.

On Sunday, Governor Ned Lamont released a statement also calling for action.

“There is a real epidemic of domestic terrorism growing in this country, with at least one of this weekend’s mass shootings reportedly perpetrated by a white nationalist. These are acts of evil generated by an expanding ideology of hatred. It’s far past time that leaders throughout our country take action against this plague that is tearing our nation apart," he said.

“We need leadership, particularly in Washington, that will not be owned by special interests. We need leadership that will not cave to the NRA and will act in the best interest of the people of our country. We need action because thoughts and prayers will not stop mass murder,” Governor Lamont added.

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy also tweeted that something must be done following both shootings.

"These young men contemplating mass murder take note of the inaction of their government, shooting after shooting, and their broken minds infer endorsement by our silence. If you're doing nothing - again - after the last 24 hours, the blood is soaking deeper into your hands," Sen. Murphy said.

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal also tweeted that his heart is with the victims of the tragedies.

"Senseless unspeakable gun violence claims more innocent victims & rips apart another community. Our hearts go to the families & all hurt, & deep thanks to first responders. Enough is enough. We know what must be done to end this epidemic of violence," Sen. Blumenthal said.

Sandy Hook Promise shared their condolences too.

"If you are as heartbroken as we are, don't let it lead you to hopelessness. We don't have to live like this. Make a promise and take action to stop gun violence. Our families, schools and communities deserve to be safe," the organization tweeted.

President of the Connecticut Citizens Defense League Scott Wilson also released a statement sending sympathies to everyone involved in the shootings in El Paso and Dayton.

"Our sympathies go out to the victims of recent mass shootings. The murder of innocent people by crazed individuals is not something we as an organization condone. Our support of the Right to Keep and Bear arms is based in the belief that we as Americans should always have the means to protect ourselves and our families from harm," he said in part.

"Given that there are already thousands of laws pertaining to firearms across our country, it is difficult to conceive of any law that would stop someone from attempting to commit the most vile act of mass-murder," he added.

Connecticut State Police also remind citizens that if they are ever in an active shooter situation, they should run, hide or fight, whichever one is safest. Then they should call or text 911 when it's safe to do so.

25 Shot in Violent 4-Hour Span in Chicago

On the same weekend were 29 people were killed in two separate mass shootings in Texas and Ohio, the city of Chicago is reeling after 25 people were shot in several incidents over a four-hour span early Sunday morning.

The first shooting, which took place at approximately 1:20 a.m. on Sunday morning, sent a total of seven people to local hospitals. One of the victims, a 21-year-old man, was listed in critical condition after being shot in the groin, and the other six victims all were in stable or good condition after the incident, according to authorities.

During the shooting, an unknown gunman in a black Camaro drove by a group of people congregating near a playground in the city’s Douglas Park neighborhood and opened fire. Several people in the group returned fire at the car, which fled the scene.

Police believe that nearly 75 shots were fired during the incident, with at least four or five people firing weapons.

Just over an hour later, two more victims were shot in the 1200 block of South Troy, according to police. The women were standing on the street when an unknown assailant opened fire, striking both victims. They were taken to area hospitals in stable condition.

[[518622372, C]]

At approximately 3:45 a.m., eight more people were shot in the 4200 block of West 18th in Chicago’s Lawndale neighborhood. A 33-year-old man, identified by family members as Demetrius Flowers, was killed in the shooting after being shot in the chest, while seven other individuals, including a 14-year-old boy, were also shot and treated for their injuries at local hospitals.

“My son was a great man,” his father Keith said. “He was a great man and I pray that nobody else has to feel this pain.”

Flowers was described as a family man, a father of three who was on his way home from a new job when he stopped to visit with friends in the Lawndale neighborhood, according to relatives. That’s when shots rang out, striking him in the chest.

“This violence on the street, it has to stop,” Keith Flowers said. “I’m gonna do everything in my power, and I ask the city to do everything it can, to eradicate this violence on the streets.”

[[513485592, C]]

All three shootings occurred in Chicago’s 10th Police District on the West Side, and Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson is directing more patrols to take place in the area to quell the surge in violence.

“Here in Chicago, we experienced an unacceptable and disheartening level of violence on the West Side last night,” he said.

The shootings come just hours after multiple mass shootings took place in El Paso, where 20 people were killed, and in Dayton, where a total of nine people were killed.

“I want to convey my deepest condolences to the people of Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas, and most certainly to the citizens of this city, who have been so affected by the tragic level of violence in a society that’s become immune to these types of shootings,” Johnson said.

The police superintendent issued a call to action for citizens and politicians after the shootings, saying that Americans need to ask themselves tough questions as mass shootings continue to take place.

"I’m going to stop myself from becoming political here, but you have to stop and ask yourself ‘what more will it take before we get a handle on what’s going on, not just in Chicago but across the country?” Johnson asked.

A total of 50 additional officers are being added to District 10 patrols for the time being, along with three teams from the department’s organized crime unit.

During a Sunday press conference, Johnson said that all three shootings were gang or narcotics-related, but that it’s possible that several innocent bystanders were shot in the incidents.

Police do not believe that the shootings were related to one another and indicated that several victims have not been cooperating with the investigation.

In all, 43 people have been shot in the city of Chicago since Friday evening, according to figures released by the Chicago Police Department. Three of the victims were fatally wounded, with several more still listed in critical condition as of Sunday evening.

The surge in violence comes just days after Chicago police announced that murders and shootings in the city were at four-year lows through the first seven months of 2019. There were 282 murders reported in the first seven months of the year, compared to 321 reported during the same time span in 2018.

NY Gov. on Cop From Eric Garner Case: 'I Believe the Officer Should Be Fired'

$

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Saturday that he believes the NYPD officer who is accused of using a banned chokehold in the July 2014 death of Eric Garner should be fired.

"We have a judge who said the officer in the Eric Garner case should be fired," Cuomo said at an unrelated press conference. "In our society, we say we follow the judge's orders and I think that's appropriate."

On Friday, an NYPD judge found officer Daniel Pantaleo guilty of "reckless assault" when he used an impermissible chokehold on Garner and recommended the officer be fired. Commissioner James O'Neil will ultimately decide the officer's future.

"When a judge says an officer should be fired because they did something wrong I believe the officer should be fired," Cuomo said. "The community needs to be respected and that's what the Eric Garner case is all about. It's gone on for five years. Five years that family has been suffering. Give them the respect of doing justice."

Cuomo also spoke of the need to respect police officers after some were recently doused with buckets of water.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said after the ruling that he will not and legally cannot tell O’Neill what to do. That did not stop protesters from interrupting the mayor's press conference, demanding the city follow the judge's recommendation.

Garner, 43, was accused of selling loose, untaxed cigarettes when he was stopped by police on Staten Island on July 17, 2014, and refused to be handcuffed. Pantaleo is seen on a widely watched cellphone video putting Garner in an apparent chokehold, which is banned under NYPD policy.

Garner, who had asthma, is heard on that video gasping, "I can't breathe." He was pronounced dead at a hospital. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide caused in part by the chokehold.

Garner's death sparked national protests about the treatment of black men and boys at the hands of white police officers.

For the first time in seven decades, an unelected governor is in charge of Puerto Rico, NBC News reports. Pedro Pierluisi was sworn in during a private ceremony as the island's new governor seconds after embattled Gov. Ricardo Rosselló's resignation became effective Friday at 5 p.m.

Both the incoming and departing governor said in written statements that Pierluisi became governor within Puerto Rico's legal and constitutional framework. But Puerto Rican legal groups and others on the island slammed Pierluisi's interpretation of the U.S. territory's Constitution, with some calling it "an atrocious abduction of Puerto Rico's current Constitution."

The Puerto Rico Bar Association said in a written statement that since "the legitimacy of the newly sworn in [governor] is in question," they are looking into "the necessary procedures to initiate a judicial process to challenge" Pierluisi's oath as governor.

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, who's running for governor in the 2020 elections, already announced her plans to file an appeal on Monday morning to challenge Pierluisi's position.
