Former Democratic National Committee head Donna Brazile considered replacing Hillary Clinton at the top of her party's ticket last year after the presidential nominee appeared unsteady and stumbled during a September 11 Memorial service, Brazile writes in her new book, NBC News reported.

Brazile, a longtime Clinton friend and ally, was stunned by what happened and the "shameful" fact that she and everyone else was kept in the dark for a time about the candidate's health.

Only hours after Clinton was spotted unsteady and requiring support to get into her van as she left the event did the campaign reveal that the candidate had been suffering from pneumonia and become dehydrated on the unseasonably warm day.

The Washington Post first reported the news of the book, titled “Hacks: The Inside Story of the Break-ins and Breakdowns That Put Donald Trump in the White House." NBC obtained a copy of the book subject to a confidentiality agreement with the publisher and can confirm the information the Washington Post has published is accurate.

George HW Bush Openly Criticizes Trump in New Book: Report

Former President George H.W. Bush has openly criticized President Donald Trump, calling him a "blowhard" in a new book, CNN reported.

In "The Last Republicans: Inside the Extraordinary Relationship Between George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush," H.W. Bush told the author Mark Updegrove in 2016 that he doesn't like Trump.

"I don't know much about him, but I know he's a blowhard. And I'm not too excited about him being a leader," he said, according to CNN's report.

NBC News has not independently confirmed the story.

Former President George W. Bush also spoke ill of the current president, saying: "This guy doesn't know what it means to be president," CNN reported.

The White House promptly responded to CNN's report.

"The American people voted to elect an outsider who is capable of implementing real, positive, and needed change - instead of a lifelong politician beholden to special interests." White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told NBC News. "If they were interested in continuing decades of costly mistakes, another establishment politician more concerned with putting politics over people would have won."

After landing in Japan for his 11-day Asia trip, Trump refused to comment on the report, saying: "I’ll comment after we come back. I don’t need headlines. I don’t want to make their move successful."

In a speech on Oct. 19, W. Bush took aim at bullying from public figures while Trump was embroiled in a feud with a Democratic congresswoman over whether he made an insensitive remark to the grieving wife of a fallen soldier. A representative said his comments weren't meant to criticize Trump.

"The Last Republicans" is set to be released on Nov. 14.

Federal investigators have gathered enough evidence to bring charges in their investigation of President Donald Trump's former national security adviser and his son as part of the probe into Russia's intervention in the 2016 election, multiple sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News.

Michael T. Flynn, who was fired after just 24 days on the job, was one of the first Trump associates to come under scrutiny in the federal probe now led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into possible collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign.

Mueller is applying renewed pressure on Flynn following his indictment of Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, three sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News. The investigators are speaking to multiple witnesses in coming days to gain more information surrounding Flynn's lobbying work, including whether he laundered money or lied to federal agents about his overseas contacts, three sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News.

A spokesperson for the special counsel did not comment. Flynn's lawyer, Robert Kelner, declined to comment. The younger Flynn's lawyer, Barry Coburn, declined to comment.

Help is Coming for Some with Crumbling Foundations

There is a measure of hope for people with crumbling foundations as they learn about the help headed their way.

“Just a little bit of relief that we haven’t seen in a long time,” Essy Piazza of Coventry, said.

Piazza was among those who attended an informational meeting at Ellington High School on Saturday.

Others say this is just the beginning to solve a significant problem.

There are catches and not everyone qualifies. That includes people who already shelled out cash to fix their foundations won’t be able to apply for grant assistance.

After the NBC Connecticut Troubleshooters spent years focusing on the crumbling concrete issue, the state recently passed a budget with tens of millions in grants for those affected.

"The problem is devastating. For most people this is the biggest investment they’ve ever made," Mayor Carolyn Mirek, South Windsor, said.

Also packed in the budget were tax assistance for homeowners and training for contractors working on basements.

On Saturday, people got up to speed about a $5 million pot to assist homeowners testing their concrete.

"Visual inspections are, will be reimbursed at $400," Pauline Yoder, interim municipal services director at the Capital Region Council of Governments, said.

Some called this assistance package a good start, but not enough.

Amanda Watkins was worried about who will be eligible for aid and that standards to diagnose the problem are not clear.

"I don’t want to give up hope right now and I certainly don’t want to back off of the responsibility on where it needs to be right now," Watkins said.

People also found out an advocacy group – the Connecticut Coalition Against Crumbling Basements – is teaming up with Trinity College to find a cheaper way to test concrete.

Also on the wish list: pushing the General Assembly during the next session to allow people to have more than a year to sue after an insurance company denies a foundation claim.

A Middletown man has died after he was struck from behind while riding his motor scooter in Portland late Saturday night.

According to police 22-year-old Daquan Moore was riding his motor scooter on the Arrigoni Bridge around 11 p.m. last night when he was struck from behind.

He landed several hundred feet away from the point of impact. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Moore was not wearing a helmet.

Portland police believe that two cars were involved. One stayed on the scene. They are still searching for the second.

“We do have some parts at the scene that we’re able to get some numbers off of so hopefully we can match a make and model or year up to the vehicle," said Portland Officer Paul Liseo. "We’re going to look at some CCTV on both sides of the bridge to see if we can come up with a suspect vehicle that we can identify.”

Police believe that two cars were racing each other over the bridge when the scooter was struck.

The car  that struck the scooter is described as a light-colored, white or beige, late model Audi with heavy front-end damage.

A witness that was standing on the sidewalk of the bridge told police there was a passenger in that car as well.

Texas Church Shooter Identified as 26-Year-Old Man: Sources

The man who killed about two dozen people at a Texas church Sunday was identified as Devin Patrick Kelley, 26, law enforcement officials told NBC News.

Kelley lived in Comal County, near the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, where he allegedly left 26 people dead. His house was going to be searched Sunday afternoon, the officials said.

Authorities have not publicly identified the gunman, who is dead. The FBI is investigating.

Many details about the shooting remained unclear hours after the gunfire erupted about 11:30 a.m.

First responders are putting "all the pieces of a very complex puzzle together to try to provide their community all the answers they need and deserve," Gov. Greg Abbott said.

An official speaking at the same news conference as Abbott said the suspect was is believed to be a young, white male possibly in his early 20s.

Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackett had no information on the nature or motivation of the shooting when he announced that approximately 25 people had been killed. Abbott said later that 26 were dead.

One victim was identified as the 14-year-old daughter of the church's pastor, Frank Pomeroy, who was out of town when the shooting took place, said his wife, the girl's mother, who was also in another state.

"We lost our 14 year old daughter today and many friends," Sherri Pomeroy told NBC News in a statement. "Neither of us have made it back into town yet to personally see the devastation."

Connecticut Leaders React to Deadly Church Shooting in Texas

Connecticut leaders are reacting to news of the deadly church shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas that left as many as 25 people dead Sunday morning.

Senator Richard Blumenthal (D) called the shooting "another unspeakable tragedy" and demanded action from Congress.

Senator Chris Murphy (D) echoed those sentiments in a lengthy statement that attacked the gun lobby and compared the incident to other mass shootings including Las Vegas, Orlando and Newtown.

"None of this is inevitable. I know this because no other country endures this pace of mass carnage like America. It is uniquely and tragically American. As long as our nation chooses to flood the county with dangerous weapons and consciously let those weapons fall into the hands of dangerous people, these killings will not abate," Murphy wrote.

"My heart breaks for Sutherland Springs. Just like it still does for Las Vegas. And Orlando. And Charleston. And Aurora. And Blacksburg. And Newtown. Just like it does every night for Chicago. And New Orleans. And Baltimore. And Bridgeport. The terrifying fact is that no one is safe so long as Congress chooses to do absolutely nothing in the face of this epidemic. The time is now for Congress to shed its cowardly cover and do something," he added.

Gov. Dannel Malloy also released a statement expressing his desire for congressional action.

"This morning a church community in Texas gathered to pray in peace and now we pray for the deceased, the injured, and their friends and families. Sutherland Springs now joins a club which no one wishes to join, a club made up of cities and towns ravaged by senseless gun violence—communities such as Littleton, Virginia Tech, Charleston, Orlando, Las Vegas, Newtown, and so many others. For the sake of all communities across the country, this madness of mass shootings needs to end once and for all. Congress needs to finally take up and pass commonsense gun control measures so that tragedies like this one never happen again. Connecticut will make any resources and expertise that we can provide available to those affected by this latest act of mass violence."

Commerce Secretary Hid Ties to Putin Cronies: Leaked Docs

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross shares business interests with the immediate family of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ross failed to clearly disclose them when he was being confirmed to President Donald Trump's cabinet, NBC News reported.

The billionaire industrialist retains an interest, partially owned by his former investment company, in shipping company Navigator Holdings, according to a trove of newly leaked documents from a Bermuda-based law firm. Navigator has a business relationship with a Russian energy firm controlled by Putin's son-in-law and other members of his inner circle.

The documents indicate that Ross did not reveal the full extent of the holdings he retained as commerce secretary in filings submitted to the government this January for his confirmation.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said he was "astonished and appalled" at the links, and that members of Congress who took part in Ross' confirmation hearings had believed Ross divested all of his interests in Navigator and weren't aware of the firm's close ties to Russia.

Ross issued a statement saying he recused himself from any matters regarding transoceanic shipping and noting he works closely with Commerce Department ethics officials. Additionally, his statement said he "has been generally supportive of the Administration's sanctions of Russian" business entities, but it did not address whether Ross informed Congress or the department he was retaining an interest in companies with Russian ties.

President Donald Trump said in Japan Monday that Sunday's mass shooting at a Texas church "isn't a guns situation" but "a mental health problem at the highest level," NBC News reported.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Trump called the shooting suspect, identified as 26-year-old Devin Kelley, a "very deranged individual" with "a lot of problems over a long period of time."

Trump dismissed guns as the root of Sunday's shooting at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs that left 26 people dead, saying "it's a little bit too soon" to discuss gun control measures. He called attention to the armed resident who confronted the shooter, saying the shooting could "have been much worse."

"It's a very, very sad event. These are great people," he said.
