Gov. Dannel Malloy’s Sandy Hook Advisory Commission is meeting in Hartford on Friday and the members for the first time will be focusing on guns.

Malloy formed the 16-member commission to recommend state policy changes in the aftermath of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, where 20 students and six educators were killed.

The meeting started at 9:30 a.m., where state police and the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association are delivering a presentation on guns, discussing state law, the process of conducting background checks and deciding on gun permit applications.

One expert on Friday spoke about how Connecticut gun laws, which are considered to be among the strictest in the country, compare to other states.

The commission has been meeting since late January and will be recommending changes to state laws that deal with mental health and guns.

The Sandy Hook Advisory Commission is set to meet next on Friday, March 8.
