Sandy Hook Commission to Discuss Mental Health Issues

When the Sandy Hook Advisory Commission meets today, the members will be hearing
testimony from experts on mental health, and it is expected to cover issues related to access to care, public awareness and discrimination.

Gov. Dannel Malloy put the commission together in the days after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December. The gunman shot and killed 20 elementary school students and six educators, then shot and killed himself.

Kim Pernerewski, of the National Alliance of Mental Illness; Louise Pyers, of the Connecticut Alliance to Benefit Law Enforcement; Deron Drumm, of Advocacy Unlimited, and Bryan V. Gibb of the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare.  Also presenting testimony will be state health care and insurance officials to speak about access to mental health care.

The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. in Room 1A.
