An employee of a Waterbury company that treats people with eye diseases is accused of embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from her employer.

MaryAnne Lawley, 29, of Waterbury, turned herself in to police on Thursday in connection with an investigation that began in June.

Detectives from the State Police Central District Major Crime Squad were called on June 13 to investigate allegations that an employee of Greater Waterbury Retina was “skimming” and had taken $46,192.59 in cash receipts from the business for several years, police said.

What followed was an investigation in which police obtained evidence, including more than 2,000 pages of financial documents, according to state police, who obtained a warrant for Lawley.

She turned herself in at Troop “I” Bethany on Thursday on charges including larceny in the first degree, two counts of willful violations of income tax regulations, tampering with physical evidence and false statement in the second degree.

Lawley was released on a $10,000 non-surety bond and is set to appear in Waterbury
Superior Court on April 24.

A LinkedIn page for a MaryAnne Lawley says she is the billing/code supervisor at the company.
