A West Haven man who stole around $310,000 from the estate of his elderly aunt was sentenced on Friday to serve 15 months in prison and pay up to $131,000 in restitution.
Phillip Wendland, 54, had pleaded guilty to one count of larceny in the first degree and was sentenced in Milford Superior Court.
According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Wendland held a springing power of attorney for his aunt, which came into effect in 2007 when she was incapacitated.
When the aunt died in 2008, Wendland assumed the role of executor of her estate and stole approximately $310,000 from the estate, according to court documents.
Superior Court Judge Frank Iannotti sentenced Wendland to six years in prison, suspended after 15 months served, and five years of probation.
Wendland also was ordered to pay $83,000 in restitution as a condition of probation.
