A 29-year-old New Haven woman and her 17-year-old brother were arrested Monday after stealing a couple’s pit bull and attacking both the dog and its owner with a baseball bat, police said.

Jacqueline Carrasquillo and her brother were arrested after confronting a couple and their dog in the area of 197 Exchange Street, New Haven. Police said Carrasquillo approached the couple, took their dog and began beating it with a bat. When the boyfriend tried to intervene, Carrasquillo turned the bat on him, according to police.

The victim told officers that the conflict originated Sunday when the pit bull jumped on Carrasquillo, causing a bruise. He said Carrasquillo vowed to kill the dog the next time she saw it, police said.

Carrasquillo was charged with second-degree assault, cruelty to an animal and interfering with police. Her brother was charged with sixth-degree larceny, cruelty to an animal and interfering with police.
