New Haven Democratic officials have missed a key deadline to turn in the results of their recent convention, forcing the party's candidates for local offices, including mayor, to collect signatures to petition their way on to the Sept. 10 primary ballot.
Av Harris, a spokesman for Secretary of the State Denise Merrill, said his office was notified Thursday by the New Haven town clerk's office that it had not yet received results from Tuesday's convention.
The names were due to the clerk's office by 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
Harris said the state law is strict and "the deadlines are hard deadlines."
Harris said the results had been mailed to the clerk, despite state officials recommending hand delivery.
State Sen. Toni Harp, the party's mayoral candidate, must now collect 2,206 signatures.
