A 14-year veteran of the New Haven police department has been charged with assault and threatening after a domestic violence complaint was filed and he has been assigned to administrative duties, according to New Haven police.

A woman filed a domestic violence complaint against Officer Juan Monzon, 47, of West Haven, on Friday with the department’s internal affairs office, according to police.

Police said Monzon turned himself in to the internal affairs investigators at police headquarters at 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday.

He has cooperated with the investigation and surrendered his duty weapon, in compliance with a domestic violence court order, according to police.

Monzon has been placed on administrative duties within the department.

"The department followed through immediately with the investigation. We hold our Officers to high standards and take such complaints seriously - as we would when investigating similar complaints involving civilians. The department continued the investigation throughout the weekend, securing an arrest warrant from the office of the State’s Attorney,” Police Chief Dean Esserman said in a statement.

Monzon has been charged with risk of injury to a minor, assault in the third degree and threatening in the first degree.

The arrest warrant has a $10,000 court set bond.

The chief said the police union was also contacted.
