More Hoverboards Recalled Due to Fire Hazards

The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued seven hoverboard recalls Tuesday due to fire and explosion hazards.

This is not the first time CPSC has issued hoverboard recalls. CPSC is aware of more than 250 hoverboard incidents related to fires since 2015, the commission said in a safety alert

A 2-year-old girl and a 10-year-old girl died in a house fire in March that was sparked by a hoverboard in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The CPSC has also received reports of 13 people burned by hoverboards, three smoke inhalation injuries, and more than $4 million in property damage linked to the scooters.

The CPSC says that hoverboards' lithium-ion battery packs can overheat, causing the boards to catch fire or explode. Owners should look for a "UL 2272" certification label to make sure their scooter is complaint. Hoverboards sold before Jan. 29, 2016, are not UL 2272 compliant.

"However, even UL 2272 compliance cannot guarantee that a hoverboard will not overheat or catch fire," the CPSC warns.

Here is information on the seven new recalls:

1. Drone Nerds Recalls Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards Due to Fire and Explosion Hazards

2. Go Wheels Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards Recalled by Four Star Imports Due to Fire and Explosion Hazards; Sold Exclusively at Village Mart

3. iHoverspeed Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards Recalled by Simplified Wireless Due to Fire Hazard

4. iLive Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards Recalled by Digital Producers Due to Fire Hazard

5. Tech Drift Recalls Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards Recalled Due to Explosion and Fire Hazards

6. Sonic Smart Wheels Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards Recalled by Dollar Mania Due to Explosion and Fire Hazards

7. Smart Balance Wheel Self-Balancing Scooters/Hoverboards Recalled by Salvage World Due to Explosion and Fire Hazards

Family Members Say They Forgive Menendez Brothers

Two cousins and an aunt of Lyle and Erik Menendez have watched the "Law and Order True Crime" series of what allegedly happened inside a Beverly Hills mansion.

"It’s very true," said Kitty Menendez sister, Joan Vandermolen.

The three tell NBC4 that the show merely scratched the surface.

"Finally they are starting to talk about the truth," said Diane Hernandez, Erik and Lyle Menendez's cousin.

When they learned Kitty and Jose were murdered none of them suspected Lyle and Erik. But these three women have no doubt the brothers feared for their lives.

"You need to pay attention to your kids," Vandermolen said. "My sister could have protected her kids. That was her job."

Vandermolen says her little sister was a vivacious girl from the Midwest who married a monster.

"I want the world to know what this man was like. What he did to his family," Vandermolen said.

The Beverly Hills police department says there was no concrete evidence of sexual abuse on North Elm Drive, but the Andersens are convinced the red flags were there when they visited.

Whenever Jose was with one of his boys, especially Erik, you were not allowed to go onto that floor. No one, including Kitty," said Hernandez. "You didn’t question Jose. He was intimidating."

Just accepted to UCLA, Erik had apparently been told by his father he could live on campus, but would have to spend several nights a week at home.

"Lyle told me in 1976 that he and his dad were touching each other. I went to get Kitty upstairs and then she came directly back downstairs," said Hernandez. "She took him by the arm and never said another word about it."

NBC4's Robert Kovacik asked Vandermolen if she believes Kitty molested her sons.

"My first inclination is to say, 'No I don’t believe she did.' Then I think how could I believe she did all this other stuff and let them be beaten and abused," said Vandermolen.

All three family members are still unforgiving towards Kitty Menendez for what they believed happened to Erik and Lyle.

When asked if they forgive Erik and Lyle for murdering Jose and Kitty, with certainty, Vandermolen, Copley and Hernandez said "yes, absolutely."

A streak of light that cast a brilliant glow in the night sky was captured on camera late Tuesday in Phoenix.

The fireball, possibly a meteor, can be seen on a city security camera as it falls from the sky and erupts in a flash. It was one of several major fireball sightings reported during a 10-hour period Tuesday and early Wednesday to the American Meteor Society

The sightings come a few days before the peak of this year's Leonid meteor shower, late Friday and early Saturday. In rare cases, meteors can fall at rates up to 50,000 per hour during the mid-November event.

Alabama GOP Threatens Retaliation For Disloyalty to Moore

As more Washington Republicans come out against Alabama's GOP U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore after sexual abuse allegations, local GOP leaders in Alabama have doubled down on their support for Moore and even made threats against defectors, NBC News reported.

Alabama's Republican Party chairwoman, Terry Lathan, told the local media that she was prepared to enforce strict party bylaws on unsupportive members of the party.

Alabama GOP bylaws give the party "the right to deny ballot access to a candidate for public office" to any elected official who "either publicly participated in the primary election of another political party or publicly supported a nominee of another political party," NBC News reported.

The provision applies for six years, meaning Alabama Republican officeholders who run against Moore or support a challenger could theoretically be barred from running again on the Republican ticket until 2023.

What You Can and Cannot Put in a Recycling Bin in Connecticut

$

The rules on recycling are now standard across the state of Connecticut, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, and there is now an instant source of information about what you can and cannot put in your recycling bin.

CHECK THE SITE HERE.

“We worked closely with recycling coordinators in our cities and towns and the six facilities in our state that accept recycled material to get everyone on the same page,” Robert Klee, commissioner of Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, said in a statement. “With one set of rules in place everywhere, it’s now easier to provide people with the information they need to recycle more effectively.”

The website offer a mobile-friendly widget that provides a quick answer to questions about what can be recycled and what can’t, short videos to highlight recycling issues and material that cities and towns can download and print to share with their residents.

“When unacceptable items are placed in the recycling bin, it causes problems at the recycling facilities and also reduces the value of recycling materials,” Klee said. “This diminishes the effectiveness of our recycling efforts because recycling is not just about collecting material – it is about making sure those materials are captured and made into new products.”

For instance, bottle caps can be recycled if they are on the bottle, but loose caps should be put in the trash.

Pizza boxes can be recycled of there are no food or liners in them.

Shredded paper should remain out of the recycling bin and should be put in the trash because dust shredded paper creates causes issues at recycling facilities.

Paper cups should not be recycled. Instead they should be thrown away.

Plastic bags should remain out of recycling bins and the trash and should instead be kept separate and taken back to one of the many retail locations that accept them.

For specific items, see here.

Bridgeport Police Look to Purchase Dash Cameras for Cruisers

There is more fallout from the controversial video of a Bridgeport police officer striking a teenager during an arrest.

The Bridgeport Police Department is now looking to buy dashboard cameras for its cruisers, department spokesperson Av Harris said.

An internal excessive force investigation is underway after the video surfaced showing Officer Christina Arroyo hitting 18-year-old Aaron Kearney on the head during an arrest last Friday after a minor traffic accident.

"It didn't look good on the video and I'll come out and I'll say that but we need to wait," Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez said Monday. "Facts before acts."

According to a department press release, after officers tried writing a court summons for driving with a suspended license, Kearney became belligerent and violent toward police, including "kicking, hitting and spitting" on them, but that part of the story wasn’t caught on camera.

"Every day I see police reports filed that it’s the word of one police officer against the word of a defendant, a citizen," Bridgeport Attorney Peter Finch said. "Why can’t we have cameras to support what’s in these police reports that a lot of times are taken as scripture?”

The City of Bridgeport would have to foot the bill up front for the dash cams, but state funding would be available for reimbursement, Harris told NBC Connecticut.

"Anything that would help because this is the community and we also want to know what’s going on in our community," Daniele West of Bridgeport said. "But we also want to know why cops take certain actions that they do.”

State Representative Christopher Rosario said he met with community leaders and the Bridgeport police chief to discuss what happened between the officer and the teen.

"If the Internal Affairs investigation finds that there was wrong doing, we are asking that the officer(s) involved be immediately separated from the Bridgeport Police Department and that charges be filed against them," Rosario said. "While we are still learning the details about the incident, we renew our call to expand the use of non-lethal force and other de-escalation tactics by the Bridgeport Police Department."

Finch is the attorney representing Julyian Fyffe, the 21-year-old who was shot twice by a Bridgeport police officer back in May when police say they were trying to stop a stolen car. This police shooting that killed Jayson Negron, who was driving the car, is still under investigation, Finch said.

"We’re still trying to see what if any videos exist of the actual incident with Fyffe and Jayson Negron and videos like I said are going to show the truth and what actually happened," Finch said. Bridgeport police have said the officer fired in self-defense after the 15-year-old backed the car into him.

Dash cams could help the public and police the next time a Bridgeport officer’s actions come under fire.

"It’s a win-win for both parties," Finch said. "The police can protect themselves and their reputation and citizens can protect their constitutional rights."

The Lady Gaga concert at Mohegan Sun last Saturday is getting national attention and it’s not for the singer’s performance but rather for her concern for a fan who was injured during the show.

The Twitter account @ladygaga_JWT posted a two-minute video in which Gaga stops the show to check on a woman who was hurt and Billboard magazine reports it was from Mohegan Sun

“Hi. I just looked over and I saw. You doing alright?” Lady Gaga asks. “Are you gonna stay? Do you need some extra help?”

A girl who identified herself on Twitter as the person who was injured at the show Tweeted that someone hit her in the face with an elbow while jumping to catch a rose Lady Gaga threw.

Gaga asked if the girl if she needed a paramedic.

“Meredith, I’m so sorry that you got hit in the face and that you’re bleeding. You OK?” Gaga asked. “We’re gonna make sure that you’re OK, alright.”

“I think she’s gonna go off now to see the doctors, but we all need to remember is that there’s somethings that are more important than show business,” Gaga said.

She then went on to dedicate a song to Meredith.

“Make sure to get that girl a backstage pass, too,” Gaga added.

Trump Has Awkward Water Bottle Moment on TV

President Donald Trump was very thirsty — for some more positive news coverage of his lengthy Asia trip, and for some water.

While speaking at the White House on Wednesday about his 11 days abroad, Trump abruptly stopped talking and stooped to look for water behind the podium. Staffers typically leave a water bottle or glass under the podium, but this time the president came up empty, NBC News reported.

"They don't have water," Trump said. "That's okay." A voice in the wings alerted him to a bottle of Fiji water within arms reach.

Trump grabbed for it, seeming to keep it away from his body and out of camera view as he unscrewed the cap before taking some gulps, reminiscent of another ill-fated political water bottle sip by Sen. Marco Rubio — which Trump had mocked.

Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign Needs Volunteers

The bell ringing season that starts each November and runs through Christmas Eve will begin this Friday.

The need is even greater this year after three major hurricanes impacted Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and other islands in the Caribbean.

"When we have a situation like this where we have an influx of folks who are in crisis who have been traumatized we need that funding even more," Brenda Downing, divisional social services director, said. "We’re not the disaster-declared state so they’re very limited if any funds [are] coming to help us with these families so we really have to rely on folks to donate money to help us do this."

The goal is to raise $1.8 million in Connecticut.

"What people giving to the Salvation Army this time of year is doing: they’re partnering with us to help put those lives back together," Major Roger Duperree, Salvation Army Southern New England divisional secretary, said.

If residents don't carry cash, they can text "GIVE CT" to 71777.

The Salvation Army said there is also a need for bell ringers this year. There are about 1,000 volunteers for this year’s campaign, but at least 500 more are needed.

Those who would like to help are encouraged to volunteer for at least two hours.

David Cornish, of Windham, has volunteered for the last 15 years.

"It seems like every year, the need gets greater. The number of people who are impacted by employment issues, by standard of living issues and try to make it through day-to-day," Cornish said. "It all starts with people just putting change in the kettle or putting a dollar in the kettle."

If you’d like to volunteer to be a bell ringer, head to the Connecticut Salvation Army website
