ICE Arrests Professor, Father of Three in US for 30 Years

A Kansas professor and father of three who has been living in the U.S. for 30 years was recently detained by immigration agents and now faces deportation, NBC News reported.

Syed Ahmed Jamal, from Bangladesh, was about to take his daughter to school on Jan. 24 when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials showed up on his front lawn and arrested him.

Jamal, 55, is a chemistry instructor who entered the U.S. lawfully on an international student visa in the 1980s, according to a lawyer for the family, Jeffrey Y. Bennett. He has three children — ages 7, 12, and 14 — all of whom are U.S. citizens, and he has no record, other than a couple of speeding tickets that have long been resolved, Bennett said.

Jamal has a "long history" of trying to get a path to U.S. citizenship, Bennett added. Throughout the years, he had a handful of student visas while pursuing graduate degrees in science and engineering, and then a H-1B visa for highly skilled workers; at the time of his detainment, he had overstayed a voluntary departure notice, but had been granted permission to stay in the U.S. under supervision. He had been given prosecutorial discretion to indefinitely stay in the U.S. under a policy formalized by President Barack Obama.

Olympics-Bound Lindsey Vonn Tweets She's Stuck on a Plane

Olympic Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn's trip to South Korea is not going as planned, according to her Twitter feed.

The gold medal-winning American was apparently stuck on a plane at the gate for about two hours Wednesday, just two days before the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Games.

"Well hopefully we get to Korea....apparently we don’t have the right documents to fly???" she tweeted, adding that there were Germans and Italians on board as well.

She tagged Lufthansa airlines and used the hashtag "#canweflynowplease."

NBC has reached out to Lufthansa about the delay.

It wasn't the only apparent mishap on the plane. Vonn also tweeted that a person sitting next to her tried to take a picture but the flash went off and she caught him.

Later, she said the person sitting next to her "wasn't feeling well so he deplaned," adding "#feelbetterdude."

It wasn't immediately clear if the sick passenger was the same one who took Vonn's picture.

Vonn, the World Cup's most decorated female Alpine skier and the first American woman to win gold in downhill, is expected to contend for the podium at the Pyeongchang Olympic Games. If she does win, the 33-year-old will be the oldest woman to claim an Olympic Alpine medal. These will be Vonn's fourth Olympics.

She also shared a video from the plane Wednesday in which she explained that she has been inspired by the memory of her late grandfather, Don Kildow.

"My grandfather recently passed away and I will be competing for him, I will make him proud," she said.

Top White House Aide Resigns Amid Abuse Allegations

One of President Donald Trump's top White House aides resigned Wednesday following allegations of domestic abuse by his two ex-wives.

Staff secretary Rob Porter said in a written statement that allegations that became public this week are "outrageous" and "simply false." Porter said photos published of his former spouses were taken nearly 15 years ago and do not tell the complete story. He said he will leave the White House after a transition period.

"These outrageous allegations are simply false. I took the photos given to the media nearly 15 years ago and the reality behind them is nowhere close to what is being described," Porter said in a written statement. "I have been transparent and truthful about these vile claims, but I will not further engage publicly with a coordinated smear campaign."

"My commitment to public service speaks for itself. I have always put duty to country first and treated others with respect," added Porter, who joined the administration at its start in January 2017. "I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have served in the Trump Administration and will seek to ensure a smooth transition when I leave the White House."

DailyMail.com reported that two former wives of Porter claimed that he verbally and physically abused them during their marriages. NBC News reached out to the women but has not spoken with them or investigated their stories.

Porter, 40, has been credited with working with chief of staff John Kelly to control the flow of information to the president. Porter was often seen with Trump when the president traveled and as he signed legislation or proclamations. Kelly referred to Porter in a statement as a "man of true integrity and honor and I can't say enough good things about him."

"He is a friend, a confidante and a trusted professional. I am proud to serve alongside him," Kelly added.

Porter, well-liked throughout the White House, lost internal support once the photos came out. But even then, Kelly was urging him to stay, according to a White House official who spoke on condition of anonymity to convey internal discussions.

Porter's first wife, Colbie Holderness, told the DailyMail.com that Porter choked and punched her during the five years they were husband and wife.

Porter's second wife, Jennifer Willoughby, also described for the DailyMail.com how Porter once dragged her naked and wet from the shower to yell at her. She filed a protective order against him. Stories published online by the DailyMail.com included photos of Holderness with a bruised eye socket that she said she suffered after Porter punched her in the face while on vacation in Italy.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said she had not discussed the allegations against Porter with Trump. She said Porter was not pressured to resign.

"Rob Porter has been effective in his role as staff secretary," Sanders said. "The president and chief of staff have full confidence in his abilities and his performance."

Before joining the administration, Porter, a Harvard Law School graduate, spent nearly three years as chief of staff to longtime Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch. Porter also worked for Republican Sens. Rob Portman of Ohio and Mike Lee of Utah.

Hatch released a statement that said he was "heartbroken" over the allegations and denounced domestic violence.

"In every interaction I've had with Rob, he has been courteous, professional, and respectful. My staff loved him and he was a trusted advisor," Hatch said. "I do not know the details of Rob's personal life. Domestic violence in any form is abhorrent and unacceptable."

Texts between an FBI lawyer and a federal agent once a member of special counsel Robert Mueller's team show that then-President Barack Obama was keeping tabs on the agency's investigation into the Hillary Clinton email scandal, according to a new report released Wednesday by a prominent Republican, NBC News reported.

The report, by the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., includes 384 pages of texts between Peter Strzok, one of the top FBI agents who was assigned to the Mueller investigation, and Lisa Page, an FBI lawyer.

Johnson suggests that one specific set of texts between Strzok and Page revealed Obama wanted to be kept abreast of the probe into Clinton's emails.

In a Sept. 2, 2016, text exchange, Page writes that "potus wants to know everything we’re doing." Potus is an acronym for president of the United States.

Two people who were arrested on drug charges after a raid at an apartment complex in Manchester are accused of buying 70 pounds of marijuana in California and shipping it to Connecticut to distribute, according to police.

In January, officials from the East Central Narcotics Task Force learned about a large-scale marijuana operation and determined the marijuana was being kept inside an apartment at the Squire Village apartment complex in Manchester, officials said.

When authorities searched the apartment, they found more than 70 pounds of marijuana, which has a street value of around $300,000, according to Manchester Police. They also found cash and other “items of evidence showing drug activity.”

Police said 22-year-old Kiara Lopez and 24-year-old Kenneth Chaparro were flying to California, where they bought large amounts of marijuana at "weed fairs," then packaged it and shipped it back to Connecticut in large boxes, using a private shipping carrier, to be distributed.

Authorities detained Lopez and Chaparro Friday as they were trying to board a flight from Logan Airport in Boston to California.

Chaparro was taken into custody and held in Massachusetts without bond, police said. He was extradited back to Connecticut Monday.

Chaparro was charged with possession more than four ounces of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, operating a drug factory, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana within 1,500 feet of a school, possession of marijuana with intent to sell within 1,500 feet of a school and possession of drug paraphernalia within 1,500 feet of a school.

He was held on a $500,000 bond.

Lopez was arrested at court Tuesday while she attending Chaparro’s arraignment.

Lopez was charged with possession more than four ounces of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, operating a drug factory, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana within 1,500 feet of a school, possession of marijuana with intent to sell within 1,500 feet of a school, possession of drug paraphernalia within 1,500 feet of a school and interfering with a police investigation.

Bond was set at $175,000.

Anyone who does visit a patient at the hospital must clean his or her hands.

The flu has contributed to 52 deaths and 1,154 hospitalizations in Connecticut this season.

Bankrupt Toys R Us has received court approval to move forward with its plans to shutter about 180 stores, under both the Toys R Us and Babies R Us banners, across the U.S.

The liquidation sales at those locations are beginning as soon as Wednesday, the company said. Discounts on items will be as much as 30 percent off, to start. Closures are also set to begin this month and run through mid-April of this year.

As Toys R Us restructures its assets, the company will also refresh a number of existing locations to be co-branded as Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores.

The company said these efforts all have the goal of making Toys R Us "more viable and competitive" in the retail industry today. Toys R Us has lost market share from competitors including Amazon, Target and Walmart, and more toy brands are selling directly to consumers.

Icing Event Ongoing, Power Outages Possible

0
0

We're continuing to track freezing rain throughout much of the state. Parts of Connecticut could be dealing with power issues by later this evening.

Freezing rain will continue for much of Connecticut into the evening hours.

The ice threat has ended for southeastern CT as temperatures have come above freezing.

Most of Connecticut will be dealing with ice accretion amounts under a quarter inch.

This typically doesn't cause any damage however it still leads to slick untreated roadways and sidewalks.

We are closely monitoring a few of the valley locations in northern Connecticut. The Farmington River Valley and the Connecticut River Valley will experience the most ice accretion.

This area could see over a quarter inch of ice accretion.

Typically when ice accretes over a quarter inch it causes tree limbs to sag and eventually break. This could result in scattered power outages.

Here's a look at impacts based on ice accretion.

LESS THAN A QUARTER INCH (up to 0.25")

MORE THAN A QUARTER INCH (0.25" to 0.5")

The precipitation will come to an end between 10 p.m. and midnight. Temperatures fall quickly during the overnight hours into the teens and twenties. This will cause any untreated surfaces to turn icy statewide.

What Will Happen to the Tesla SpaceX Shot Into Space?

0
0

After the Tesla Roadster hitched a ride into orbit on SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket Tuesday, experts are predicting smooth sailing for the cherry red convertible, NBC News reported.

The car's current trajectory will take it beyond mars and into the asteroid belt in its planned orbit around the sun, according to a diagram tweeted by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. But scientists say it is unlikely the car will encounter anything beyond ultraviolet radiation, cosmic rays, other highly charged particles or an occasional micrometeoroid.

As a result, ongoing exposure to UV light will cause the car's paint to fade over time, just as cars here on Erth do.

A NASA physicist estimated that the Roadster has traveled about 450,000 miles from Earth, or roughly twice the distance from Earth to the moon, as of Wednesday afternoon.

41 Olympic Guards Hospitalized After Norovirus Outbreak

The International Olympic Committee said it was isolating 1,200 people handling security for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and distributing leaflets about preventing infection after 41 security guards were hospitalized with vomiting amid an outbreak of norovirus.

South Korea has moved military troops in to handle security in the interim, NBC News reported.

The nasty stomach bug causes vomiting, cramps and diarrhea. It can and does infect any large gatherings of people such as hundreds of passengers on cruise ships, people who share a restaurant table or those who eat food prepared by someone sick with norovirus.

Norovirus, also called stomach flu and winter vomiting virus, sickens 21 million people in the U.S. each year. There’s no cure — treatment involves supporting people to make sure they don’t suffer dehydration. And there’s no vaccine to protect against infection.
