"Real-time" facial recognition has tremendous potential for crime prevention but it's also raising alarms for over the risk that it makes mistakes, NBC News reported.

The FBI and law enforcement agencies around the country have been using facial recognition databases for years, but the technology is advancing to the point where police can pick suspects out of a crowd on live video — that's reportedly already happening in China, and U.S. security agencies are testing it at some airports and border crossings.

One tech executive vowed never to sell such technology to police departments while another called on Congress to enact regulations on facial recognition, which is already used to tag people in Facebook photos and unlock iPhones.

"We are at a moment where facial recognition is being marketed to communities while not being proven as public safety tools," said Matt Cagle, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California.

Her comments come weeks after President Donald Trump nominated conservative judge Brett Kavanaugh to replace Kennedy, a key swing vote on the court.

People in Coventry are rallying around Wicked Slice, a pizza business that broke out in flames on Friday, and orders are coming in for T-shirts that were designed to help the business owners.

“It was devastating, to say the least,” said James Donahue, the owner of Wicked Slice in Coventry.

James Donahue and his wife Ann opened Wicked Slice almost two years ago in October. He leased the building and told NBC Connecticut the landlord is going through the insurance process.

Donahue said he was stunned to find out that within hours of the business catching fire, people in the community, including Tonya Ohlund, were brainstorming ways to help.

Ohlund, who runs a small print shop out of her home, decided to design and sell a shirt to donate the proceeds to Wicked Slice. Within 24 hours she already had more than 100 orders.

“I know that they’re appreciative and I know that we need them here. So we’re going to do whatever we can do to get them back here,” Ohlund said.

Adult shirts are $15, kids shirts are $10. Everything but $2.60/shirt is being donated to the pizza shop.

“It’s overwhelming, honestly,” said James Donahue. “Make sure they know how much we appreciate them reaching out to us and making us feel like family.”

“We’re very humbled by all the people who have rallied behind us,” said Ann Donahue.

US Citizens Quietly Monitored Under New TSA Program: Report

An undisclosed federal program called "Quiet Skies" has armed air marshals gathering intelligence on thousands of Americans at airports and on airplanes, according to a Boston Globe report published this weekend.

Meant to thwart emerging threats, the Transportation Security Administration program flags people who aren't already under investigation or on the FBI's Terrorist Screening Database and has agents monitor them for behavior like having an "Adam's apple jump," a "cold penetrating stare" or sweaty palms, tracking dozens of them every day on domestic flights, according to the report. Citing agency documents, it said that all U.S. citizens arriving in the country are screened under Quiet Skies, but travelers being monitored are not notified.

The Globe reported that dozens of air marshals have raised concerns about the program internally — one texted colleagues that the activities are "troubling and raising some serious questions as to the validity and legality of what we are doing and how we are doing it."

The TSA acknowledged to NBC News that the program exists but said it's "not intended to surveil ordinary Americans" or factor in race or religion in its judgments.

"In the world of law enforcement, this program's core design is no different than putting a police officer on a beat where intelligence and other information presents the need for watch and deterrence," a TSA representative said in a statement, claiming there is "robust oversight."

While the report said the initiative began in March, senior government officials told NBC News it dates back to 2010 and that the screening process has evolved.

The American Civil Liberties Union called the program nonsensical, wasteful and concerning on constitutional grounds.

"Given TSA's track record of using unreliable and unscientific techniques to screen and monitor travelers who’ve done nothing wrong, we should remain especially vigilant," the organization tweeted Sunday.

A commercial fishing crew caught a 6-foot great white shark off the coast of Misquamicut Beach in Rhode Island on Sunday.

A Facebook post with pictures and videos of the shark has gone viral, with more than 22,000 shares.

Fisherman Michael Lorello said in the post that they caught the great white about 3/4 of a mile off Misquamicut around 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

He told NBC Connecticut it accidentally got caught in their net and they had to quickly find a way to get it back into the water.

They used a rope and a winch to lift the shark and then cut it loose back into the water.

Rudy Giuliani Says Collusion With Russia Is Not a Crime

President Donald Trump on Sunday tweeted again what he has repeated for months: there was "no collision" between his campaign and Russia, NBC News reported.

But on Monday his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani took a different tack, downplaying in two interviews the seriousness of collusion.

"I have been sitting here trying to find collusion as a crime. Collusion is not a crime," Giuliani said in an interview on "Fox and Friends" Monday morning. A little later, during an interview with CNN's "New Day," Giuliani said, "Colluding about Russians, I don't even know if that’s a crime, colluding with the Russians. Hacking is the crime."

While there is no statute covering "colluding" with a foreign power, it is illegal to conspire to violate laws against hacking and foreign participation in elections, NBC News reported.

Family of Chicago Man Fatally Shot by Police Files Lawsuit

$

Family members of a 24-year-old man who was fatally shot by Chicago police have filed a lawsuit against the city and the officer who shot him, alleging that Maurice Granton Jr. was not an imminent threat and did not need to be met with deadly force during the encounter.

The lawsuit filed in Cook County comes days after the release of body-camera video showing an officer firing at Granton as he sought to hop a fence. It says a bullet severed Granton's spine as he grabbed the fence with both hands. It alleges Granton wasn't a threat then and the officer could have used a stun gun.

Granton was shot at around 8:15 p.m. on June 6 in the 300 block of East 47th Street in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the city's South Side, officials said.

Officers were conducting a narcotics investigation when Granton "fled on foot prompting officers to give chase," Chicago police said in a statement.

"Responding officers commanded him to stop at which point the man produced a weapon and an armed encounter between the offender and police ensued," CPD said.

Granton was taken in critical condition to an area hospital where he later died, according to police.

While authorities said the initial investigation centered on drugs, his family insisted that Granton was not involved in narcotics or carrying a weapon.

"I do not believe that. He was not a drug suspect," his sister Joanna Varnado said after the shooting. "He was from around that area. He did hang around there. But drug suspect? No, not at all."

When asked if Granton would carry a gun, Varnado replied, "No, absolutely not."

Chicago police said investigators recovered a weapon from the scene, and a CPD spokesman tweeted a photo of the handgun on the ground - but Granton's family said it didn't belong to him. An attorney for his family said the gun found at the scene was about 20 to 25 feet from where he was fatally shot.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability released body camera video from the shooting on July 25, showing an officer firing from a sidewalk as Granton attempted to climb a fence.

"[The officer] was looking at him. Then he started to run into the alley - and I heard shots, five shots," witness Joseph Lambus said. "They shot him in the back. They shot him in the back."

Family members said Granton was shot multiple times and an autopsy revealed he had been shot in the back.

His family argued that the video showing the shooting contradicts the police narrative that Granton was involved in an "armed confrontation." COPA has not yet ruled on whether the shooting was justified, as the agency continues to investigate.

A great white shark was spotted swimming off Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro, Massachusetts near swimmers on Monday.

The sighting was confirmed by a lifeguard plane that was circling overhead. Swimming at the Cape Cod beach was shut down for one hour.

This latest sighting comes following a busy week for shark activity off the New England coast.

On Saturday, swimmers at Nauset Beach saw a great white shark eating a seal near shore. The water was filled with blood, and swimmers were temporarily kept out of the water. Also on Saturday, a white shark was unintentionally caught in water off the Massachusetts. The 10-foot immature female shark was brought to Scituate after being caught in a gillnet.

Another great white - this one 6-feet long - was caught by fishermen off Rhode Island on Sunday.

And bite marks found on a whale carcass off Old Orchard Beach in Maine last week have been confirmed to be from a great white.

In the past week alone, the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy's Sharktivity app shows that there have been nearly a dozen shark sightings off Cape Cod alone.
