Cruise Ship Denied Entry to Cuba on Maiden Voyage to Havana

A cruise ship that was headed for Havana, Cuba on Friday was denied entry to the country. Now, customers are upset and travel organizers are working to figure out why they couldn’t get into Cuba.

“We didn’t pay to sit in international waters, we paid to go to Cuba, to Havana!” said one passenger yelling inside a theater on the ship.

Bahamas Paradise’s cruise ship, the Grand Classica, departed the Port of Palm Beach Thursday for her maiden voyage to Cuba. The ship would have arrived in Havana on 7 a.m. Friday. Some people would have gotten off the ship to explore the island, and some Cuban nationals would have been allowed to temporarily board to reunite with family and friends.

“It’s very sad,” said Lily Wynter, who flew from Los Angeles to take the cruise with her mother. “It’s something we planned for a couple months. I have an uncle I haven’t seen in 17 years.”

Wynter’s mother left Cuba in 1972. This would have been her first time back.

A spokesperson for Bahamas Parade Cruises said that Viva Travels, a travel agency, chartered the Grand Classica. The spokesperson said that despite prior approval from the Cuban government, they were denied entry for unknown reasons.

The ship left Cuba and made its way to the Bahamas. The ship is set to return to West Palm Beach on Monday.

“There’s no activities, there’s no performances, there’s really nothing to do,” said Wynter.

A State Department spokesperson released a statement to NBC affiliate WPTV saying, “Every state has the sovereign right to regulate the entry, screening, and stay of foreign nationals in its territory, subject to its international obligations. For cases regarding into Cuba, we would refer you to Cuban immigration authorities.”

WPTV said that a call to the Cuban embassy in Washington DC was not returned.

Fla. Inmate Saves Locked Baby With Coat Hanger & 'Skill Set'

A Florida inmate helped rescue a baby locked inside a vehicle on Valentine's Day by using a coat hanger and his "skill set."

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office said deputies received the report of an infant locked inside an SUV at a New Port Richey courthouse on Thursday.

"Upon arrival, it was 56 degrees outside and the baby was in a car seat and appeared to be comfortable," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "Several minutes went by as the parents could not enter the SUV successfully."

The parents told officers they could not afford a locksmith. The father then told deputies he was going to break the window on the driver's side.

Before the window was smashed, however, a Pasco County Sheriff’s Office inmate supervisor and five low-risk offenders repairing a parking lot median nearby at the West Pasco Judicial Center offered to help.

The father and other inmates helped pry open the door just enough for the inmate to use the coat hanger to push the electronic unlock button on the door.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco praised the inmates who helped free the infant and save the family from a window repair bill.

"Our trustees are people who have made mistakes, we're trying to rehabilitate them to get back into society," Nocco told NBC 2 News. "A lot of them, like these individuals, they know they made bad mistakes, bad choices, but they want to do the right thing in life."

Nocco said the inmate's "skill set" came in handy, though he jokingly added that "only when a deputy is around and we give permission can you break into" a vehicle.

The infant's mother, Shadow Lantry, captured the incident on video.

"This is hilarious," an officer is heard saying in the video before apologizing for the situation.

The mother agreed.

"It's not funny about the baby but everything else is hilarious," Lantry says.

Lamont Administration Explains Position on Tolls After Backlash

Governor Ned Lamont's Chief of Staff took time on a Sunday afternoon to speak with reporters to explain what led to the Lamont Administration laying out two paths for tolls on the state's highways, which could end up breaking a campaign promise just months into his time running the state.

Ryan Drajewicz, Lamont's Chief of Staff, said his goal is to "lower the heart rate about this."

In an op-ed in Hearst Connecticut Media newspapers, and in a video posted to his official social media accounts, the governor laid out his vision when it comes to tolls, proposing two different paths: tolls for trucks only, and tolls for all cars that travel on Connecticut's highways.

Lamont campaigned on a toll program for trucks and repeatedly ruled out tolls for all cars, which led to social media backlash, and harsh criticism from Republicans.

Drajewicz told reporters on a quickly organized conference call Sunday afternoon that,

"This is the start of a discussion, not the end," Drajewicz said in a quickly-organized conference call Sunday afternoon. He said the decision to pursue two paths on tolls was made because the governor believes it's the right thing to do.

"The politically expedient thing to do is to stick to what was said during the campaign, but this is the right thing to do," Drajewicz said. "Politics has nothing to do with this. This was the right decision based on the hard data."

Drajewicz said there have been numerous meetings with Lamont's inner circle of advisers and budget writers on the topic of tolls. In looking at how they have projections showing truck tolls could bring in at most $200 million annually, while a wide scale toll program could bring in more than $800 million annually, Drajewicz says the decision was made to collect input on both toll ideas.

Connecticut is one of the only states along the Eastern edge of the United States that does not have any highway toll program.

Tolls were removed from the state's highways in 1989 in a gradual phase-out, after a deadly crash at the Stratford toll plaza on I-95 in 1983.

The reaction on social media and from politicians opposed to tolls was swift.

Republican Sen. Len Fasano, the Minority Leader in the Connecticut Senate called Lamont's announcement, "a disappointing step backward."

Former GOP gubernatorial nominee Bob Stefanowski also chimed in.

"I just don't understand how politicians get away with breaking an absolute promise within four months of making it," Stefanowski told NBC Connecticut.

Stefanowski was opposed to tolls in all forms, but also never articulated a vision for how he would propose to improve infrastructure if he were elected governor.

Drajewicz told reporters that the governor is looking to do what is best for Connecticut, and the politics of the decision are not going to prevent him from doing that.

"There's a difference between being in the campaign in the heat of debate and being in the governor's office," he said.

The NYPD said Sunday it was reviewing allegations by 50 Cent that a police officer told other cops to shoot the rapper and actor on sight.

The Grammy-winner, whose given name is Curtis Jackson, tweeted that he took the threat seriously and was consulting his lawyer. Jackson called Deputy Inspector Emanuel Gonzalez a "dirty cop abusing his POWER."

"The sad part is this man still has a badge and a gun," Jackson tweeted.

The NYPD told NBC 4 New York that the incident was under internal review.

The allegations stem from a report in The Daily News that Gonzalez told officers at a roll call last summer to "shoot him on sight," referring to Jackson's expected appearance at an NYPD boxing match. The report was based on an anonymous source.

Gonzalez and Jackson apparently had an ongoing feud involving one of Jackson's favorite bars in Sunset Park, The Daily News reported. Jackson accused Gonzalez of shaking down the bar in a since-deleted Instagram post. Gonzalez filed an aggravated harassment complaint accusing Jackson of threatening him in a comment on that post.  No charges were filed.

Snow that began Sunday night continued into Monday and made for some slick roads for the morning commute.

Areas of northern Connecticut saw two to three inches of snow before the sun came up. State police responded to some minor crashes and spin outs on state highways but none were serious.

Schools were off across Connecticut for the Presidents Day holiday, cutting down on the amount of traffic on the roads and sparing superintendents from having to make a decision about delaying or canceling school for the day.

Some parts of the state saw the snow mix with sleet, keeping totals down to just one inch or so.

Snow showers were expected to continue through the afternoon and some spots could see an additional one to two inches of snow before the system moves out of the state.

Tuesday is expected to be clear and cold but another system is headed our way for Wednesday.

The NBC Connecticut meteorologists have issued a First Alert for snow beginning Wednesday evening that could be briefly heavy at times before the precipitation turns over to rain on Thursday morning.

The owner of Sift Bake Shop in Mystic broke ground Monday on an expansion project for the Water Street bakery.

Adam Young, the winner of season two of the Food Network's Best Baker in America, says the project will include a 2,200-foot expansion of the store, including the addition of a wrap-around porch to the building.

The plans include adding 150 seats inside and outside the bakery.

Between full-time and seasonal employees, Young says he hopes to add 75 people to the staff at Sift.

The kitchen will have an outdoor patio above it with views of the water.

While the restaurant will remain open through most of the renovation, Sift will have to close for a couple of weeks in April, Young said.  During the closure, crews will renovate the front of the shop.  Young says there is the possibility of a temporary food truck at the store and their Watch Hill, R.I. store will remain open.

He has set May 15 as the target date to complete the expansion.
