State Police Return to Home of Missing Mom’s Estranged Husband

As the search continues for Jennifer Dulos, a missing mom of five, state police on Friday were back at the Farmington home owned by her estranged husband, Fotis Dulos, and exclusive drone footage shows people looking around the large yard and coming out of the wooded area behind the home.

Jennifer Dulos. 50, has been missing since May 24.

An NBC Connecticut crew near Fotis Dulos’ Jefferson Crossing home in Farmington saw state police vehicles coming and going from the neighborhood on Friday.

Last weekend, police arrested Fotis Dulos and his 44-year-old girlfriend, Michelle Troconis, in connection with the missing person case. They have both been charged with tampering with or fabricating physical evidence and hindering prosecution in the first degree in connection to the missing person case.

The NBC Connecticut crew also saw a silver BMW go in and out of that neighborhood on Friday and it had the same license plate as the one that Troconis was seen in with her attorney, Andrew Bowman, Monday as they left court after she posted bond.

That vehicle was in the private neighborhood for around an hour and the man driving the BMW Friday appeared to be Troconis’ attorney while the passenger had long hair and was wearing sunglasses.

NBC Connecticut’s Droneranger got an exclusive aerial look of the Farmington property, which shows what appear to be Connecticut State Police vehicles parked on the property and people looking around the large yard and coming out of the wooded area behind the home.

Jennifer and Fotis Dulos lived together in the Jefferson Crossing home before she filed for divorce in 2017 and moved to New Canaan.

Fotis Dulos and his girlfriend had been living at the home until they were arrested over the weekend.

Troconis has been out on bond since Monday and Fotis Dulos remains in police custody.

Several young children with disabilities in Connecticut are able to move a little be easier today with the help of electric cars made just for them.

This week, students put the final touches on a high school tech project that will touch the lives of the pint-sized drivers behind them.

About 30 Kaynor and Wolcott Tech students are building electric cars for kids with disabilities.

Kaynor sophomore Michael Mullen helped make modifications to one car that will help a child use it for mobility.

“I want to make sure that they’re able to use anything they can to make themselves go,” Mullen said.

For these students, building the eight cars is as much about head as it is heart.

“We have high school students here who are teenagers who normally wouldn’t think about other people and the ability to show that there are other people out there who have needs,” Lee Pelletier, the head of Kaynor’s Electronics Department said.

In one driver’s seat is Christian Grabowski, just pressing the red button gives him mobility.

“They modified it so he could use his hand to press buttons because he doesn’t walk he has cerebral palsy and autism,” Ted Grabowski said.

His parents say the lesson learned here for these students will go beyond the classroom walls.

“I’m just happy at least that they’re learning and that they share the patience and understanding of a special needs child,” Grabowski said.

And perhaps drive them do more to help others with disabilities.

“It touches my heart it makes me happy to see that see a smile on their face as they’re driving in they’re going,” Mullen said.

The cars came through a grant from the Torrington Chapter of UNICO National and a private donor and are part of the “Go Baby Go” program that helps kids with disabilities have access to independent mobility.

Trump Admin Tells U.S. Embassies They Can't Fly Pride Flag

The Trump administration is rejecting requests from U.S. embassies to fly the rainbow pride flag on embassy flagpoles during June, LGBTQ Pride Month, three American diplomats told NBC News.

The U.S. embassies in Israel, Germany, Brazil and Latvia are among those that have requested permission from Trump's State Department to fly the pride flag on their flagpoles and have been denied, diplomats said.

Although the pride flag can and is being flown elsewhere on embassy grounds, including inside embassies and on exterior walls, the decision not to allow it on the official flagpole stands in contrast to President Donald Trump's claim to be a leader in supporting LGBTQ rights overseas. The denials to U.S. embassies have come from the office of the State Department's undersecretary for management, Brian Bulatao, a longtime associate of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who also worked for him at the CIA.

The State Department in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment, nor did the U.S. embassies in Jerusalem and Brasilia. The U.S. Embassy in Riga, Latvia, referred questions about the flag to the State Department.

Businesses Grateful for Warm, Sunny Weather

Morgan Kearns has been looking forward to a special outdoor luncheon with her two young daughters.

“It’s so nice for them to be able to get their energy out and just be outside in the fresh air instead of being cooped up,” said Kearns, “because it was a long winter.”

It was not only a long winter for Kearns and other patrons but also for some weather-dependent businesses. As one landscaper explained, green grass means more green in their pockets.

‘It helps a lot because when it’s always raining we end up skipping lawns and we can’t do a lot of them because it’s way too wet,” said Chris Cope of Meriden. “It’s A lot busier. A lot more profitable now.”

Sunny skies and a terrific weekend forecast is reason to party, especially if you’re in the party business.

“When we have nicer weather, people like to party more,” said Tom Ryan of Edgewood Party Rentals.

Edgewood Party Rentals is a party supplier and for them business has just hit peak season.

“Early in the spring it was not as busy. Not as many parties because of the damp weather. But business now is crazy busy,” Ryan said.

The same could be said for patio dining. Like the temperature itself business has begun to heat up, unlike the spring.

“Early spring and the winter with all that bad weather, it was kind of sad,” said Sammy Bajrakparevic..

Bajrakparevic owns Luce, a popular Middletown restaurant with outdoor seating, seating he says accounts for 30 percent of his business during summer months. With blues skies ahead, his business forecast appears much better than April.

“When it’s nice on the outside, everybody’s festive. Everybody’s feeling good. Everybody wants to come out,” Bajrakparevic explained.

Stag Arms to Move Out of New Britain

Rifle manufacturer Stag Arms has decided to leave New Britain.

In a Facebook post Friday, the company announced plans to relocate from the New Britain facility on John Downey Drive. The decision on a new location has not been finalized.

“The location of Stag’s new headquarters has not been finalized but the Board has narrowed down the options to a short list of vibrant communities where there is significant support for the firearms industry,” the company wrote in a press release.

New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart said the news was not a surprise.

“We have known for many years that Stag has been courted by other states following the passage of more stringent gun laws here in Connecticut. Quite frankly, I’m surprised it took this long. While we are never happy to lose a business, the industrial park where it is located is 90 percent full and I am hopeful that it will be filled with another tenant within six months,” she told NBC Connecticut.

Legal Expert Analyzes Jennifer Dulos Investigation

Two weeks after she dropped her five children off at New Canaan Country school, 50-year-old Jennifer Dulos is still missing and the search to find her continues.

“They very much want to do that for a whole lot of reasons both legally and morally and emotionally for the family," Attorney John Williams said of efforts to find the missing mother. "Will that happen, I don’t know.”

A longtime criminal defense attorney based in New Haven, Williams closely reviewed key court documents from the investigation. He is not involved with this case that's gained national attention.

“This is an exceptional example of all of the stands of modern forensic criminology coming together,” Williams said.

Williams is referencing the surveillance video from Albany Avenue in Hartford and cell phone tracking from that led to New Canaan Police to charge Jennifer's estranged husband Fotis Dulos and girlfriend Michelle Troconis with evidence tampering and hindering prosecution.

“The one thing I hadn’t picked up from the news reports was that he voluntarily turned over his cell phone in the presence of his lawyer," Williams said, "which is not the usual procedure.”

NBC News confirmed Friday that Troconis and her attorney Andrew Bowman met Thursday with investigators.

“I think the prosecutors really, really need her cooperation," Williams said of Troconis, "I think it would be very valuable to them if they can get it.”

NBC Connecticut ended the interview with Williams by asking, if there is a chance these cases could be tried outside of Fairfield County.

"Is there any place in Connecticut where people haven’t formed opinions about this case?" Williams said. "I don’t think so.”

Next Tuesday morning, all eyes on Stamford Superior Court where Dulos and Troconis will next face a judge. Dulos has yet to post his bond, while a judge required Troconis wear a GPS monitor on her ankle as a condition of release Monday.

Questions About Safety Record of Company at Center of Double Fatal Crash

$

NBC Connecticut Investigates has learned A & S Services Group, LLC, the company that owns the truck that triggered a fatal, multi-vehicle crash on I-84 Monday, is considered a high-risk carrier by at least one measure.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has several yardsticks to gauge trucking safety.

The FMCSA website gives the York, Pennsylvania company a satisfactory safety rating.

However, there’s another measure not visible to the public called an ISS2 algorithm.

It goes from zero to 100. A rating above 75 means the carrier is high risk and its trucks should be inspected.

A & S Services Group has a 97, according to vehicle inspectors who spoke with NBC Connecticut Investigates.

For perspective, one of the inspectors says FedEx has an algorithm of 63, which means it’s optional to inspect.

That inspector also explains larger carriers may have a higher algorithm because of the number of trucks they have, and they often get written up for violations on the trailers they are towing, even if they don’t own them.

Other safety data on A & S Services Group says in the past two years, there have been four other fatal crashes involving the company.

Motor vehicle inspectors and a state trooper tell us that’s not a high number, when you consider the company has almost 1000 vehicles.

We reached out to A & S Services Group for comment about its ISS2 algorithm and the crash. We have not heard back.

“Just adrenaline, just going out there trying to throw strikes, I really don't have any words right now,” said Burrows.

Senior Cadin Maynard delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the seventh.

“I was going up there looking for something I could hit,” said Maynard. “He hung a slider up over the plate and hit it up the middle and Sonny hauled and he scored. It was just electric."

The Lancers captured their 11th state championship in program history, which sets a new state record.

Timeline of New Canaan Mother's Disappearance

$

0

A 50-year-old mother of five from New Canaan has been missing for two weeks and her estranged husband and another woman have been arrested in connection to her disappearance.

Here is a look at a timeline of events on the investigation into Jennifer Dulos's disappearance.

On Friday, May 24, Jennifer Dulos dropped her children off at the New Canaan Country School. After that, police said she missed multiple appointments before friends reported her missing around 7 p.m.

Later that day, officers said they found her abandoned black SUV on Lapham Road by Waveny Park.

By Wednesday, May 29, the search for the missing mother intensified at the popular park in New Canaan. That day, officers said they were treating this as a missing person case, while also launching a criminal investigation to determine if Jennifer had been the victim of foul play.

Jennifer's close friend and family spokesperson Carrie Luft spoke with NBC Connecticut and said, "The children are safe and they are doing well given the circumstances. They, of course, miss their mother incredibly."

On Thursday, May 30, six days after Jennifer vanished, police said the search expanded across the state line to a property in Pound Ridge, New York.

NBC Connecticut also obtained court documents from the divorce case of Jennifer and her estranged husband, Fotis Dulos.

In the initial 2017 affidavit, she wrote she was “terrified for (her) family’s safety” and said her “husband has a history of controlling, volatile and delusional behavior.”

But in a court filing from his attorney, Fotis denied those allegations. And the day before being served with divorce papers in June of 2017, he called 911 with his own concerns.

“I’m worried about my wife and kids because they left to go to New York and I haven’t been able to get in touch with them,” Fotis said in a 911 call.

Jennifer moved from their shared home in Farmington to New Canaan around the same time she filed for divorce.

On Friday, May 31, authorities put out a new missing person poster. Officers continued seeking tips from people driving by Waveny Park in New Canaan.

“If you happen to remember anything, just call our tip line. It’s all anonymous,” police said.

By Friday afternoon, state police confirmed the search for clues moved to multiple locations in Hartford including on Milford Street, Albany Avenue, Homestead Avenue and Sigourney Street.

Then on Saturday, June 1, New Canaan Police said they were securing search warrants in their criminal investigation.

On Sunday, June 2, New Canaan Police Chief Leon Krolikowski announced Fotis and Michelle Troconis had been arrested in Avon on Saturday night around 11 p.m.

Fotis and Troconis are each facing charges including tampering with or fabricating physical evidence and hindering prosecution in the first degree, according to authorities.

Both appeared in court on Monday, June 3 and bond was set at $500,000.  If they post bond, they will be subject to GPS monitoring and will be required to turn in their passports.

They have also been ordered to have no contact with each other, with Jennifer or her family.

Troconis has surrendered her passport and posted bond Monday. She was seen leaving court with a GPS monitoring device on her ankle.

On Tuesday, June 4, state police were at the Materials Innovation Recycling Authority (MIRA), a trash facility in Hartford, in connection with Jennifer's disappearance. A source with knowledge of the investigation told NBC Connecticut that state police contacted MIRA on Friday about a garbage truck that made a collection on Tuesday, May 28.

Also on Tuesday, Jennifer's mother, Gloria Farber, filed a motion in court for custody of the children. At a status hearing Wednesday, there were no changes made in custody.

On Wednesday, June 5, police executed search warrants properties owned by Fotis, including his home on Jefferson Crossing in Farmington and a property at 61 Sturburdge Hill Road in New Canaan.

On Thursday, June 6, the attorney representing Fotis in the divorce and custody dispute filed a motion to withdraw from the case.

The motion, filed Thursday by attorney Micheal Rose, states that considerations other than compensation will prevent the firm from continuing to represent Fotis.

Also on Thursday, Michelle Troconis and her attorney met with investigators.

Officers said both the missing person and criminal investigations are active and dynamic.

As the criminal investigation progresses, authorities said additional criminal charges are expected.

Jennifer has not been located and the search for her is ongoing, police added.

On Friday, June 7, state police were back at Fotis's home on Jefferson Crossing in Farmington. NBC Connecticut crew saw a silver BMW matching the description of the one Troconis and her attorney were seen in at the home.

On Saturday, June 8, troopers continued to search for evidence related to Jennifer's disappearance at MIRA in Hartford. A source tells NBC Connecticut that troopers are specifically looking for evidence that might have been picked up by a garbage truck and shredded inside the facility days after Jennifer disappeared.

Also on Saturday, an employee at MIRA told NBC Connecticut that some of the clues related to Jennifer's disappearance may have been burned before police had the chance to search the facility.

Clues in Missing Mom's Disappearance May Have Been Burned at Hartford Trash Facility: Employee

$

As state police continue to search in a Hartford garbage plant for evidence in the Jennifer Dulos missing person case, we've learned some of those clues may have been burned before police had a chance to search.

An employee who explained the plant's process to NBC Connecticut says after the garbage is shredded, some of it is sent directly to the incinerator to run the power plant.

The rest is stored as future fuel for the power plant.

State troopers have been sifting through the trash that was stored since Monday.

That material has been through two shredders and cut into eight inch strips, according to the employee who spoke with NBC Connecticut exclusively. That employee said some of the shredded material was burned before police had the chance to search it.

More than two dozen state troopers have been seen sifting through the shredded garbage with the help of K9s throughout the week.

They are looking for evidence that may be connected to the New Canaan mother's disappearance more than two weeks ago.

State police have been working 12 hour days at the Materials Innovation and Recycling Authority in Hartford and Saturday marks their sixth day of searching there.

The slow and precise investigation includes sifting through shredded garbage that is stored as fuel for the power plant. Half a bucket full of material is spilled out onto a floor, according to a MIRA employee, and police are using K9s to sniff through it.

City surveillance cameras captured a man matching the appearance of Dulos's estranged husband, Fotis Dulos, dumping bags of garbage along Albany Avenue the day she disappeared.

Saturday marks the start of week three of the search for Dulos, a mother of five who has been missing since May 24.
