Hamden Expands Community Policing Program

Hamden Police is expanding its community policing in an effort called “Hamden Community Police 365” and it will change how officers patrol the town.

The mayor and the acting police chief tell us community policing routes will run every day, during every shift and in every neighborhood.

Officers will spend at least 30 minutes of their shift out of their cruisers meeting with residents.

They’re also increasing bike patrols and walking beat routes throughout the summer.

It’s hoped officers on evening and overnight shifts will take part when possible.

In a statement announcing the increased effort, Mayor Curt Balzano Leng wrote in part:

“Additional routes, more community policing as a Hamden Police governing philosophy, and 24/7 positive relationship building interactions, can be priceless for our Town. I look forward to seeing our officers on our streets and in our neighborhoods even more, and towards strengthening the bonds between our community and our guardian protectors.”

Now this follows increased tensions between community members and the police department.

People protested for weeks following the shooting of an unarmed couple by Hamden and Yale police back in April.

Since then activists had pushed for changes in police operations.

“We have this notion that somehow if you’re poor, you cannot do it. Poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids,” he said during a town hall in Des Moines.

He paused, then quickly clarified, “wealthy kids, black kids, Asian kids.”

“No, I really mean it, but think how we think about it,” he said.

'Mildly Venomous' Snake on the Lam After Escape at Bronx Zoo

The Bronx Zoo is looking for a "mildly venomous" snake that escaped from its enclosure this week.

The zoo told News 4 Thursday it began notifying guests entering the JungleWorld exhibit a day earlier about the missing 3 1/2-foot-long mangrove snake, which vanished from its exhibit Tuesday.

"While we are confident the snake poses no threat to visitors, we placed a sign at the entrance of the exhibit out of an abundance of caution," the zoo said in a statement.

While poisonous, mangrove snakes are not known to be dangerous to people, a spokesperson said, adding, "They are shy, timid, secretive in nature and active at night. We have every reason to believe the snake is in JungleWorld."

The snakes are thin and black with yellow rings. A bite can cause severe swelling, but the reptiles have never been known to kill a human. Mangrove snakes are mostly nocturnal.

In the meantime, if you see it -- the zoo would like to know.

Police are investigating after a neglected and injured puppy was found in a bag on the side of the road in Southington and they said they have video of a car that was seen dropping the bag the dog was in.

Southington Animal Control responded to the area of Empress Drive and West Center Street Thursday after a resident reported that she found a small beagle, around 6 weeks old, in a bag on the side of the road.

The puppy was brought to an area veterinarian and found to have injuries and signs of serious neglect.

The puppy is still being treated at a local veterinary and his health is improving. Police said he is starting to eat and play and is expected to recover.

There is a lot of interest in the puppy and Southington Animal Control has received many inquiries about adopting him, but he is not ready for adoption, according to police.

When the puppy is healthy enough to be adopted, police will notify the public.

Police Focus on Safety, Urge Residents to Enjoy Events

Summer weekends in Connecticut are made to be celebrated and despite recent tragedies in California, Texas and Ohio, this weekend is no different.

Several communities have outdoor events scheduled this weekend, including Putnam which will host he “Al Fresco, The Voice” event tonight. Those in charge of security want people to enjoy it and are focused on insuring their safety.

“First and foremost, come, enjoy have fun. Relax,” Putnam Police Chief, Chris Ferace, said.

Putnam police are very aware of what the nation has faced recently and said they have been vigilant in planning for tonight. The event will be held in Putnam’s Rotary Park.

Ferace explains, having an outdoor venue is a little different than an indoor arena but they will be ready.

“We’ll be heavily staffed tonight with our sworn personnel and our auxiliaries,” Ferace said. “We’ll be on look out and we’ll be vigilant.”

While there will be a strong police presence tonight the chief said it’s always a good idea to have a plan in case of emergency.

“Have a little bit of situational awareness and be vigilant,” he said. “Keep your head on a swivel. Don’t get caught in the moment so much that you’re oblivious to what’s going on behind you.”

Chery Bernier lives in Putnam and said she’s never felt unsafe here. She is also a safety professional, who teaches active shooter training and has advice for those attending any major event.

“Always have your eyes open,” she said. “In the case of any emergency make sure YOU are safe first, before attending to others.”
