Milder Temperatures Today Before Bitter Blast of Winter This Week

$

0

The cold air that started the weekend is starting to moderate across the state. Highs on Saturday did not make it out of the 30s in many parts of the state.

The high temperature at Windsor Locks made it up for 42 degrees. The average high for this time of year is 54 degrees.

Milder air will continue into Monday before a serious blast of cold air moves in for Tuesday.

A strong cold front will bring rain to the state during Tuesday morning. As the cold air moves in, the rain will change to snow from west to east.

There could be a coating of up to an inch of snow (hills may see up to 2” amounts).

The changeover to snow along with dropping temperatures could cause slippery travel for Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday evening.

Bitterly cold air and wind will combine for dangerously coldwind chills in the single digits by Wednesday morning.

Wind chills will remain in the teens for most of Wednesday before some moderation in temperature at the end of the week.

A video taken by Hometown Heroes Connecticut this weekend shows Vietnam veteran John Smith from Woodbridge rolling out of his home in his wheelchair on his brand new ramp.

Until Saturday, Smith couldn’t get out of his home without someone to carry him down his front steps. Thanks to House of Heroes Connecticut, he doesn’t have to worry about that anymore.

They built him the ramp so he can safely get in and out of his house.

House of Heroes had their second annual Veterans Day breakfast fundraiser at Eli’s on Whitney in Hamden on Sunday morning, so that they can help more veterans like John.

The event included a full breakfast buffet, music, raffles and other activities for the family to enjoy and support our veterans on this Veterans Day weekend.

“Every job is different, every veteran is different,” House of Heroes Connecticut chairman Carol May said. “But the gratitude is always there, and we sleep better at night knowing that we’ve been able to help them.”

House of Heroes Connecticut provides home repairs to military and public safety veterans, and their spouses, who are disabled, living on a fixed income, or facing other physical and financial challenges. The work is all at no cost to the veteran.

Democrats Push Back on GOP Efforts to Have Whistleblower, Hunter Biden Testify

Democrats on Sunday pushed back on Republican requests for testimony from the whistleblower who helped launch the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump, as well as former Vice President Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, NBC News reports.

Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, requested the whistleblower, the younger Biden and his business partner Devon Archer testify before House investigators in a letter Saturday to Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the committee's chairman. Later Saturday, Schiff poured cold water on that request, saying the impeachment probe would not serve "to carry out the same sham investigations into the Bidens or debunked conspiracies about 2016 U.S. election interference" Trump asked Ukraine to conduct.

The whistleblower alleged that Trump in a July phone call tried to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to probe the Biden family and conspiracy theory involving the 2016 election. Much of what the whistleblower alleged, based on second-hand information, has since been backed up by witness testimony as well as a White House summary of the call. But Trump and his allies have sought to unmask the whistleblower, a CIA employee detailed to the White House, since his complaint was made public.

Through his legal team, the whistleblower has offered to provide written answers to the impeachment investigation.

Could Trump's Re-Election Go Up in a Puff of 'Smoke?' Vapers Say Watch Out

They're here. They vape. And they say they'll vote you out of office if you come for their "unicorn poop" flavored vape juice, NBC News reports.

Facing a perfect storm of threats from federal, state and local governments, vapers are banding together politically to defend a product that they claim saves lives and that has created a livelihood for some and way of life for others.

As the Trump administration prepares to roll out new rules as soon as this week on vaping in response to an alarming rise in teenage e-cigarette use and health concerns, hundreds of adult vapers gathered outside the White House on Saturday. They were there to convince people that President Donald Trump could lose his re-election if he alienates a growing constituency that is only just now becoming politically active.

"If Trump bans flavors, there's a good chance he loses Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida," said Ryan Hallisey, from Orange County, N.Y., a vape store owner who took part in the demonstration. "He won those so narrowly, and so many vapers, like 80 percent, are single-issue voters."

Marching bands, bagpipers and other musicians were just a part of the annual Veterans Day Parade in Enfield on Sunday.

“For me, being a veteran and my husband being a veteran, he’s an Iraq veteran, it’s very special when I see people from the community and from different organizations out here,” said Pamela Townsend, American Legion Post 154.

People bundled up to watch different community groups, politicians and others march through town.

At Eli’s on Whitney in Hamden, people could enjoy music and breakfast as part of a fundraiser for House of Heroes Connecticut.

The organization provides free home repairs for veterans facing various challenges.

“Every job is different. Every veteran is different. But the gratitude is always there,” said Chairman of House of Heroes Connecticut Carol May.

In West Hartford, a crew from Rob’s Gutter Cleaning offered up their services for free to veterans, including Rob Rowlson.

“This was very special to me. It’s the first time in my life I’ve not been able to do it,” said Rowlson.

The company worked on at least 15 homes in town this year.

It has plans to expand the program next year to elsewhere in the state.

Making Sure Your Home Is Ready for Winter: Saving Money & Energy

$

It’s the second week of November but the winter chill is here and now is the time to make sure your home is ready for winter and that you’re not wasting energy….or money.

In an effort to help homeowners create a more energy efficient household,  Eversource came up with the Home Energy Solutions program.

“They showed me where I was losing my energy as far as my heating. They sealed up many of the areas that were causing the draft and whatnot,” explains Frank Jacovino of Thomaston. “They did a wonderful job there and out of here maybe in a couple hours."

Frank Jacovino’s house was build in 1866 and 153 years later, it was leaking air and wasting valuable energy and money.

“Overtime things settle originally when they were built, not too much insulation was put in,” explains Enoch Lenge from Eversource. “And so it’s actually a real opportunity to seal up those air leaks and to put in additional insulation and you know, again, the comfort benefit is huge.”

Through Eversource's Home Energy Solutions program, Frank had an authorized contractor come out to his home and not only show him where he was losing energy, but they fixed everything right on the spot for a set fee ranging from $150-$175 dollars depending upon how you heat your home.

But that one time fee goes a long way. The average home receives $1000 worth of services and saves $200 to $250 a year on their energy bills. From sealing up air leaks and servicing air ducts and heating systems to replacing light bulbs with LED's that can save up to 90 percent energy use.

There are multiple resources in Connecticut that support green living including organizations like The Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund, United Illuminating, Connecticut Light and Power. Everyone has the same goal of protecting our environment and saving you money.

NY Rep. Peter King Retiring, Giving Dems a New District to Target

$
0
0

Rep. Peter King, a moderate Republican from New York, announced Monday that he will not seek re-election in 2020, citing more time to spend with his family.

"This was not an easy decision. But there is a season for everything and Rosemary and I decided that, especially since we are both in good health, it is time to have the flexibility to spend more time with our children and grandchildren," King, who grew up in Queens, wrote in a Facebook post.

The 75-year-old Republican says he intends to remain in Seaford and still be politically active.

King's district includes southwestern Suffolk County and a portion of Nassau County, about an hour's drive east of Manhattan.

With King's retirement, Democrats seem certain to target the district in 2020. While the district went narrowly for Trump in 2016, many suburban districts around the country have been moving steadily toward Democrats as moderate, well-educated voters swing away from the polarizing president.

King, a former chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, has cultivated a reputation for bipartisanship while maintaining a hard line on immigration and crime. He is the longest-serving Republican member of New York's congressional delegation. Still, he won reelection in 2018 by just 6 percentage points.

Twenty House Republicans have announced they will not seek reelection. Three other GOP lawmakers have resigned and already left Congress.

House Democrats retook the majority in 2018, and are looking to defend their majority and grab new seats in suburban districts in what they see as a backlash against Trump.

Only a handful of the Republican-held districts being vacated by retirements are expected to be seriously competitive next year. But King's district will be one of them, underscoring GOP vulnerability in suburban areas, spotlighted last week as suburban voters in Virginia and Kentucky flocked to Democratic candidates in elections for state offices.

King said he will complete his term in office and serve his Long Island constituents "all the way to the final bell of the final round on Dec. 31, 2020."

The 14-term congressman took office in 1993 after serving 11 years as the Nassau County Comptroller.

Before that, Rep. King had experience as a practicing attorney and civic leader. He began his political career in November 1977 by winning election to the Hempstead Town Council.

NBC's Kiki Intarasuwan contributed reporting.

Fire caused extensive damage to a home on Rivermead Boulevard in East Hartford Monday morning.

The fire was reported around 8:22 a.m. after a neighbor alerted the family about a fire on the front porch and called 911.

The family was able to get out, but a cat in unaccounted for, officials said.

There are fire hydrants in the complex, but fire officials said they do not provide enough of a steady stream of water.

“There’s a water supply issue in this neighborhood,” assistant chief Kevin Munson said. “We’ve been working with the MDC to try to fix that, but as of right now, it didn’t impact our operation at all. “

It appears the fire started outside and extended inside.
