Severe Flu Season Affecting Schools

A severe flu season is causing problems for some schools in the state.

Stepping Stones Early Learning Center in Danielson announced they were closed Friday because most of its teachers are sick with the flu.

In a Facebook post, school leaders said they hope to be open on Monday.

The director of health services at Woodstock Academy sent a note home to parents. In effort to prevent the spread of the flu, they’re urged parents to keep sick children home.

At Pomfret Community School, they are alerting parents the flu is starting to spread there. The school is asking parents to let them know why a child is out when they call in an absence so they can give extra attention to cleaning in certain classrooms.

Flu activity in the state remains high and widespread and officials encourage residents to get a flu shot. Officials warn that peak flu season could still be several weeks away.

In an effort to protect the public’s health and reduce the spread of the flu virus, DPH will hold a State Flu Vaccination Day Saturday.

Attorney: Walmart Locked, 'Segregated' African American Hair Products

Walmart was set to face a discrimination lawsuit Friday after a woman claimed African American hair products were locked behind glass at a California store.

Famed attorney Gloria Allred held an afternoon news conference Friday.

"It was something I had to stand up for," the mom said. "I would like the glass to go down, and for things to go back to the way it was, where it's not segregated and everything is where everyone can get what they need."

Essie Grundy said she was discriminated against based on her race at a Walmart located at 1800 N. Perris Blvd. in Perris on Jan. 12.

Grundy claimed she went to a Walmart to buy beauty products and found the items used by African Americans were locked behind glass, according to a statement from Allred.

Allred said Grundy was shocked that the hair and skin items were "segregated" while beauty products for other races were easily available to customers.

Grundy, a mother of five, also said she was not allowed to touch the lotion she wanted to buy until she purchased it, accompanied by an employee to the register.

She said she felt like a "criminal," as people were watching her being escorted to the front cash register, not allowed to hold the product herself.

Grundy said she complained to the employee, who agreed with her, and said he complained about this before. He allegedly told her it was a directive from corporate, Allred said at the news conference.

The woman returned to the Walmart once again to buy products, and said the section was in the same condition, with a security camera overhead.

The woman said she was buying a comb that cost $0.48, and was wondering why that item was locked up while other non-African American products that were more expensive were not kept behind a glass.

Walmart responded to the claims, saying it does not tolerate discrimination of any kind.

"We serve more than 140 million customers weekly, crossing all demographics, and are focused on meeting their needs while providing the best shopping experience at each store.

We’re sensitive to this situation and also understand, like other retailers, that some products such as electronics, automotive, cosmetics and other personal care products are subject to additional security. Those determinations are made on a store-by-store basis using data supporting the need for the heightened measures. While we’ve yet to review a complaint, we take this situation seriously and look forward to addressing it with the court," a spokesman said.

Parent Reacts to Catholic Schools' Financial Struggles

Some Catholic schools in Connecticut are struggling financially, and parents were disappointed to learn in one case, the problem was so big the school will have to close.

“There was not much explanation,” Crystal Celentano said.

Shocked and saddened mom Crystal Celentano is trying to hold on to hope and keep her daughter’s school Our Lady of Victory in West Haven open.

“When we got there they basically told us the school is closing,” Celentano said.

The school is slated to close at the end of the academic year.

“A lot of the parents feel that we could've done something but we weren't aware of the situation at all,” Celentano said.

A statement from the school’s pastor says, “sadly the school’s financial reserves have been depleted over the years due to declining enrollment, escalating costs of operation, and diminishment of parish subsidies.”

Celentano says she and other parents learned about the school’s closing at a meeting last night but wished they knew sooner so they could help.

“A few of the parents said that if we had to pay a little extra to meet a certain deficit we could have but no one even asked no one asked,” Celentano said.

Meanwhile, another meeting at St. Francis-St. Hedwig School in Naugatuck Thursday detailed that school’s financial challenges.

“A financial review shows that the school is anticipating a major financial shortfall by the end of the school year," said Superintendent of Catholic Schools Dr. Michael Griffin.

“We just got enrollment letter for kindergarten last week,” Celentano said.

Celentano hopes it’s not too late for her daughter to spend another year at a school she loves.

A Mild Weekend Followed by Snow

If you're not a fan of the cold weather you're going to really like the weekend forecast. However if you're not a fan of snow you're probably not going to be too thrilled with the forecast for the Monday/Tuesday time-frame.

Let's start off with the forecast for this weekend. Temperatures will be quite mild compared to the average high temperatures for this time of year. In fact high temperatures this time of year are typically in the middle 30s.

Saturday will feature mostly sunny skies throughout the morning and early afternoon hours. Temperatures will range from the middle 40s along the water to near 50 degrees for inland Connecticut areas. In addition to the mild temperatures it will also be quite breezy. Winds will be out of the south at 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph along the shoreline.

Clouds will be on the increase by Saturday night with showers moving in after 8 p.m. Scattered showers will continue through the overnight hours. The good news is that the showers taper off by 10 a.m. on Sunday with clearing skies by the afternoon. High temperatures on Sunday will reach the middle to upper 40s.

Now onto the threat for some snow...

I'll start by saying there is A LOT of uncertainty within our computer guidance. The uncertainty exists with the track of the system in addition to the timing of the system.

With that being said our computer models as a whole have trended the system to the west which has increased the probability for accumulating snow in the Monday/Tuesday time frame.

Let me take you through a couple of the possible tracks with this system and discuss what we think is most likely.

SCENARIO ONE

This track would bring the storm out to sea (roughly 200 miles southeast of Nantucket). This would result in some light snow showers with the main part of the storm staying well off shore. Little to no snowfall accumulation can be expected with this track.

SCENARIO TWO

This storm track would bring the system much closer to the coast and much closer to the "classic nor'easter" track. A track this close to Connecticut would result in a significant snowfall accumulation with much of Connecticut experiencing over six inches of snow. It would also cause travel problems Monday into Tuesday.

Right now I think we will end up with something in between the two with a few inches of snow possible. However a shift to the west would result in more snow and a shift to the east would result in less snow.

We will keep a close eye on this system through the weekend and will provide updates as new information comes in.

March Protests Report on Fatal Bridgeport Police Shooting

A large crowd of protesters marched in Bridgeport after the Waterbury State’s Attorney announced that a Bridgeport police officer who shot and killed a teen during a traffic stop would not face charges for the incident.

Bridgeport Police Chief Armando Perez has said Officer James Boulay opened fire when a stolen SUV driven by 15-year-old Jayson Negron suddenly went into reverse and nearly ran over Boulay on May 9. Another man was also injured.

On Friday the Waterbury State’s Attorney released its report on the investigation, which concluded that Boulay was justified in his use of force.

But supports of Negron, who had been calling for criminal charges in the case, did not accept that decision. At a rally at the site of the shooting they gathered in a show of support and the protest the findings of that report.

Supporters gathered with messages written for Negron, along with flowers and candles, and marched through city streets.

Negron’s family is expected to speak at the rally.

Jayson Negron’s father released the following statement through his attorney.

“Of course we want justice and accountability, however, I ask that everyone conduct peaceful demonstrations. The one thing I do not want is violence. That will disrespect the memory of my son.”

Attorney Peter Finch, who represents Julian Fyffe, the man injured in the shooting, told NBC Connecticut they will pursue civil recourse.

"I am aware that no criminal charges are being brought against the Bridgeport Police Officer Boulay, but that does not resolve the civil aspect of this case and I look forward to bringing that to its conclusion on behalf of my client Julian Fyffe," Finch said.

Bridgeport Police Chief Perez released a statement in response to the conclusion of the investigation.

“This is a very difficult time for the community and for my department. This was a tragic event where a police officer made a split-second decision. I want to express my deepest sympathies to Jayson Negron’s family and to the community as we work through this terrible incident.

I am committed to working with our local and state leaders to build bridges with all of our citizens as we go through this difficult healing process.”

Bridgeport Mayor Joseph Ganim also released a statement that read, in part:

“I extend my deepest sympathies to the family of Jayson Negron and all those effected by this terrible tragedy. I stand in solidarity with the community in peaceful and constructive means to express our feelings and emotions through this difficult healing process."

The ACLU of Connecticut expressed its disappointment with the decision and claimed this was an issue of police accountability and racism.

“Maureen Platt’s decision not to press charges against Bridgeport police officer James Boulay is part of a pattern of police not being held accountable when they hurt, kill, and discriminate against Black and brown adults and children in Connecticut and across the country. The state’s unjustifiable delay in releasing video footage of the shooting is also the latest example of Connecticut police and prosecutors ignoring public demands for transparency after police kill,” wrote David McGuire, executive director of the ACLU of Connecticut.

Vila, World's 2nd Oldest Known Gorilla, Dies at 60

One of the world's oldest and most beloved gorillas, Vila, died at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park Thursday.

Vila was not alone. The Safari Park said she was surrounded by members of her family, her gorilla troop.

Villa was believed to be the second oldest gorilla in the world. She was the matriarch of five generations and recently celebrated her 60th birthday alongside her 1-year-old granddaughter Leslie.

At her party in October, zookeepers explained how rare it was to see a gorilla reach six decades of life.

“Sixty is a very big deal in the gorilla world because there are very few gorillas anywhere near that age,” Peggy Sexton, lead animal keeper at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park said.

Gorillas typically live to 35 or 40 years old.

According to the Safari Park, Vila was believed to have been born in the Congo in October 1957. There were only two other known western lowland gorillas close in age to Vila, per the park: one at the Little Rock Zoo in Arkansas and another at the Berlin Zoo in Germany, both of whom are estimated to have been born in 1957, too.

After Vila arrived in the United States, she was hand-raised at the San Diego Zoo and later moved to the Safari Park. She lived a healthy life, serving as a surrogate mother for many western lowland gorillas over her lifetime.

Last year, Vila underwent a medical treatment for fluid retention that, if left untreated, could create life-threatening illnesses. Vila received a full diagnostic exam and recovered normally, the Safari Park said.

Gorillas are listed as Critically Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. Gorilla numbers have declined dramatically over the past 15 years and San Diego Zoo Global continues its conservation efforts in collaboration with organizations across Uganda, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Cameroon.

Vila's troop includes an adult male silverback, four adult females, two young males, one young female and little Leslie. They can be seen daily at the Safari Park, typically eating leaves, stems, fruits, seeds, vegetables and leaves.

The St. Agnes Home in West Hartford, a residential care facility for young mothers and infants, will close.

Officials from the state Department of Children and Families said the home is closing because the agency has reduced the use of these residential programs by two-thirds statewide.

There are no children at St. Agnes, and there haven't been for "some time," according to DCF.

DCF said its goal is to place children with families, not in an institutional setting.

The Sisters of Mercy established the home in 1914.

It’s not clear when the home will close.

Wynn Resigns as RNC Finance Chair Amid Misconduct Claims

Casino mogul Steve Wynn resigned Saturday as finance chairman of the Republican National Committee amid allegations of sexual harassment and assault, the committee's chair confirmed to NBC News Saturday.

Wynn has been a prolific Republican donor and led the RNC's fundraising efforts during President Donald Trump's first year, helping the committee rake in more than $130 million.

"Today I accepted Steve Wynn's resignation as Republican National Committee finance chair," said RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.

A White House official told NBC that before Wynn’s decision was made public, President Donald Trump was made aware.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that a number of women said they were harassed or assaulted by Wynn, the chairman and CEO of Wynn Resorts. Wynn has denied the allegations. One case led to a $7.5 million settlement with a manicurist, the newspaper reported.

Wynn was chosen by Trump to lead the RNC's fundraising effort, and he contributed more than $600,000 to GOP causes last year, according to the Federal Election Commission.

A person with direct knowledge of the situation said Trump had signed off on the decision for Wynn to resign. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to share private discussions.

Since 2013, Wynn has contributed nearly $2.4 million to GOP candidates and party organizations around the country, including 2017 special election winners as well as dozens of state Republican Party committees.

The allegations against Wynn have come during a wave of sexual misconduct claims against prominent media, entertainment and political figures that gained momentum last fall after the emergence of detailed allegations of rape and harassment involving movie producer Harvey Weinstein.

During the fall, RNC officials, including McDaniel, noted that Weinstein had been a top donor for Democrats, including 2016 presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

In early October, McDaniel tweeted that if the Democratic National Committee "truly stands up for women like they say they do, then returning Weinstein's dirty money should be a no-brainer."

The RNC has not yet said whether it will return any money donated by Wynn.

Trump’s State of the Union Theme: Safe, Strong, Proud US

President Donald Trump will use his first official State of the Union address, according to White House officials, to tout economic progress under his watch while outlining efforts to secure America’s borders, NBC News reported.

His speech Tuesday night will come barely a week after a three-day government shutdown, as both chambers of Congress continue to wrangle over funding for one of the president’s central policy initiatives — a border wall with Mexico, currently part of his new proposal to offer a pathway to citizenship for 1.8 million young undocumented immigrants.

Mired in record-low approval ratings and an ongoing federal investigation into his campaign’s contacts with Russian government officials, Trump will look to use Tuesday’s address to convince the American people that his White House is on the right track and speak to an anxious nation deeply divided over issues ranging from race and religion to economic and gender-based questions of opportunity.

The White House said this week that the president will strike a "bipartisan tone" in his speech, and urge for greater collaboration. Trump has drawn adversaries in both parties, often sparring publicly with lawmakers on Twitter, calling them names and questioning their political clout.
